Wow I got goose bumps when you mentioned the Philippines. I got my Ancestry results showing 33% Basque and 66% Filipino born in the Philippines. I live in Central Valley California I am trying to learn my heritage one step at a time. I enjoyed your videos, thanks for sharing.

My interest in linguistics brought me here. A language indigenous to Europe but isn't Indo-European and predates it by millennia? I'm totally learning about it!

I haven't done any dna tests or anything, but I'm fairly certain I have no Basque in me. I just find their unique history fascinating. So many people groups and languages have been lost over the centuries assimilated into larger groups, and it is remarkable to find a window into a very old culture that has survived so much. Thanks for your videos!

I don't know if you corrected it but the prevalence of Rh negative blood is a b negative in The Basque region. This is the this is the rarest blood besides I guess the no blood, another place that there's a heavy prevalence is in Northern Africa the Berber tribe. Anyway I have been a Rh negative aficionado and just thought I would chirp in if you already corrected yourself please forgive my comment rock on thank you for your videos very informative.

Really nice introduction :) bit I would like to make a positive criticism if O might... Do people call Scotland a region? Do people call Wales a region? Not really... they are nations without state, but nations nevertheless. So this exactly who we are, for different historical circumstances. Unless "region" has a different meaning in English I find it "diminishing". And I have no idea why has become so popular in Angloxason media to call us "region". In any case really cool video :) we need more presence in internet and in English language. Thanks a lot ! :)

eneko sagarbide hey that is great feedback. I totally agree the Basque Country is a nation. I didn’t script this video so I guess region is the first word that came to mind, as “nation” isn’t a word I use very often. But this would be a really great topic for a future video!

Awesome channel! Love learning about Basque history. My grandmother was born in Cuba to a Basque mother. Unfortunately her mother passed away when my grandmother was a young child and she never got to know much about her, she has always been much of a mystery. A mystery that has always intrigued me and I’ve found my self trying to learn more about her. We have not been able to find her very unusual last name anywhere. Her last name was Garabayti and she was from Bizkaia. Trying to get any vital records from Cuba is non existent thanks to there “wonderful” political stance. Anyway, I’m pretty sure something will come up someday.

Glad you're enjoying the channel! That's a very interesting family history, it's a shame your grandmother didn't know her mom very well. If you're looking to learn more about your Basque name though, I would recommend you try asking about it in a Facebook group called I'm Basque & Proud. From time to time people post about their ancestors' names/villages and there are some knowledgable people in the group who may be able to tell you something :)

Hola Anne-Marie! Like you, I am part of the Basque diaspora, born in the Philippines and live in Los Angeles, CA. My forefathers were seafarers that sailed along with the Spanish conquistadors that colonized the Philippines many years back. Our lineage comes from Gipuzkoa province. Originally my basque surname is Irastorza but when my forefathers joined the spanish fleet, the spanish govt changed the spelling to Yrastorza to make it sound more spanish and not basque. During that time, the basque people were discriminated a lot. The reason is say this, there is really no Y in the basque alphabet and only I. So there goes my history... anyway, its a fascinating culture to be proud of. Great blog!

Hey Joey, thanks so much for sharing your family history! Really interesting! And yes, it was super common for Basque names to be changed to seem more French or Spanish. It's really impressive you know so much about your family lineage. :)

My folks were some of the last living los ninos vascos at the renunion in Blackboys years ago. They met in the camps bc of Franco so I can't be too mad at him I guess. You're so great! Araba? Does this name have any relation to the Arabs who used to rule spain?
@oier2995
@oier2995 3 года назад
No, it comes from basque meaning something like "flat". "Laua" means flat in standard basque but that "u" often was pronunced with a b so it'd be like "laba". Then the "a" was added probably due to facility in order to pronunce it. Then the r came naturally in the development of it's pronunciation. It's an old place name and words tend to change so much, so that letter changes are usual.
