The micro:bit is a small computer board with an ARM Cortex-M0 microprocessor plus sensors and LEDS. It is part of an initiative to get kids coding. Interested? Here is my full review.

Thanks for your kind comments. I do occasionally do some of the smartphone reviews, my most popular was the Huawei P9 review, it almost has 1,000,000 views (but not quite): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8OfBr-cp5Dw.html

Hi Gary, thanks for this. Have you tried attaching external components using the pins? Is there a connector system to do so or are you expected to solder?
@GarySims
@GarySims 7 лет назад
These boards are aimed at young people as a way of introduction, so there is no soldering here. You can attached wires to the connectors using crocodile clips!
@charlieangkor8649
@charlieangkor8649 4 года назад
if aimed at young beginners why not terminal blocks? have to run to an electronic store to buy crocodile clips? which are so big they like short 4 of those contacts together?

Yes and crocodile clips. The idea being that no soldering is needed!

So you only get 3 I/Os (plus power and gnd)? Because those narrow strips look a bit too small to attach crocodile clips without shorting them :P..

Gary what are your thoughts on having programming taught in highschools? Maybe not even pure coding, but courses such as Critical thinking, or courses in logic. Teach relational algebra, logic in the real world, and maybe a language like Visual basic. Myself as a student in Comp Sci, its amazing how this sort of field changes the way you think through complex problems, I personally think it should be a requirement to take some sort of logic class. Huge companies habe recently been sponsoring Code.org in order to help push teaching programming to younger audiences

I like the idea of trying to get people to program. But I feel like they are missing the point of the 1980s Home computers. You didn't need to have another computer to use them. You just needed a TV. For computers like the ZX81 you just needed a TV and maybe a tape recorder to use it. And it wasn't unusual for even a poor family to have TV and tape recorder. And they were teaching basic and logo programming to elementary school students when I was a kid. My older brother bought a Color Computer MC10, kind of a Tandy version of the ZX81, and I was writing code on that when I was 10 years old without a classroom. I specifically wrote a mathematically naive version of breakout that always reflected the ball by just inverting the X or Y velocity when the ball hit something. I don't think these "Block" programming languages are that brilliant. I think they are underestimating what children are capable of. Kids have a mind like a sponge which learns language skill faster than a college age student can and when they are fixated on something like programming they just won't stop. I kind of get it, but an IDE for a text based programming language would be probably better in the long run. And if you already have a PC/Computer then what's really necessary is to not require an "add on" or even a download for you start learning programming on it. It should be part of the natural way you interact with the system just as it was with the original BBC Micro.

Block building needs to go. Kids will be turned off when they see the complexity of actual code. They are being lied to, they think "Look what I did with my micro:bit, I'm such a good programmer".... All the while they haven't seen nor written a single statement of code.
@joeschembrie9450
@joeschembrie9450 5 лет назад
That can be fixed by having IDEs that use blockbuilding. Also, blockbuilding systems need to develop a way to manage large chunks of code. In ten years, the idea of writing 'single statements of code' may seem as arcane as programming directly in machine language.
