Marc talks about the different breeds of cattle on the farm and why he’s using a South Poll bull on Devon/red angus cows. #cattle #cows #grassfed #grassfedbeef #grazing #rotationalgrazing #smallfarm #smallfarming
Worked at an East coast Kosher slaughter house years ago where they would kill between 460 to 700 head of cattle everyday along with hundreds if sheep , lambs & calves. Most of the cattle were black Angus steers, did not do too many bulls and over a hundred cows a day. They were know for thier quality Kosher meet where they shipped some every week to some Islands, Switzerland , & maybe even Las Vegas.
It really depends on your needs. I’m not in the hot south, I don’t need a very heat tolerant breed. Your farm set up matters too. I have a lot of silvo pasture I can move them to for shade and shelter. We do have the potential for some really nasty cold. Not ideal for a slick coat south pole. we grow row crops, much of our ground is dual purpose. Hence, our breed is heavily Dexter influenced genetics for the light weight. Their is 15-20% Waygu in the blood line. Not enough to drop the wagyu name as a marketing tool, but their is a bit of hybrid vigor in our genetics and they finish 90% very high choose or better. Our dams are Jersey that spend 6 months being mommas, 3 months as dairy cows, and 3 months rebuilding and getting the next generation to term. We end up with an 800-900 lb animal that is a mixture of 3 general breeds. With our small grains and edible bean crops, we require a 30’ windrower, and I really like putting up silage with it to unroll so they have a rich food source along with the stock pile.
Wow! You guys have a lot going on! Love hearing about your practices. Where are you located? I fully agree…every farm has different needs for their own context and practices. Thanks for watching and your great comment!
Pretty country down there, too hot for me but it is beautiful. My son was stationed in Little Rock my dad lived over by Mena. Looks like your farm had been abused over the years. It takes time to bring it back but you are on the right track.
Where are you from David? In my full time job, I work right outside the airbase. Our farm is about 15 mins away. It’s going to be fun to watch the soil and forage get better!
@Pure South Pastures Farm I'm in Massachusetts. Don't judge some good people up here trust me. My son lived in Cabot back in 2004. Then transferred to Okinawa. He is retired now. We drove around the state years ago so many cattle and pretty farms. I have a friend in Connecticut that is building a herd of South Poll Influenced cattle. He's a super good young guy. He's on Landsimilar to yours but hilly.
Moderate framed south poll hanging weight vs big black angus hanging weight. Sure there’s a difference but is it considered to con to the south polls or so you think you still come out on top
The problem is, generally speaking, you can’t keep weight on a large framed steer/cow without costly inputs. So on grass, water and mineral alone, I’ll take the moderate frame every time. I have some larger (not really big) framed red angus and they just can’t compete on keeping weight with the1/2 blood southpolls that are smaller. Great question. Thanks for watching and your comment.
@@puresouthpasturesfarm6460 my black angus currently keep weight on pretty good. I have some south polls and they’re definitely considerably smaller. Even if they are able to keep good body condition I think the 3/2 theory still makes a lot of sense
put a wool hat on yur mic to cancel the wind out. DO NOT! touch or pet a bull on the neck or head you'll get a demanding rammy rooty bull..pet the rest of him all you like to make them tame, from front shoulders and back. you have been warned!
🇫🇷Discovering your channel … great video but difficult to watch after 8 /9 minutes with such a wind noise. Hope you can sort it out next time .. end great video again …
