As the new school year quickly approaches, and staff and students prepare to return to the classroom, it's essential to focus on keeping educational spaces safe and healthy. An easy way to do that is by selecting the right hand sanitizer for your school.
In this video, we'll provide facility managers like yourself with the key information needed to select the most effective hand sanitizer.
Let's start with the basics: understanding the types of hand sanitizers: Alcohol and non-alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
To be effective, alcohol-based sanitizers should contain at least 60% alcohol. For non-alcohol-based options, check the active ingredients and ensure they provide broad-spectrum efficacy.
Alcohol-based sanitizers, containing at least 60% alcohol, work fast and are generally more effective against a broader range of germs, which is why they are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). They're ideal for quick and efficient sanitation, especially in high-traffic areas.
However, alcohol-based sanitizers can sometimes cause dryness with frequent use.
Non-alcohol-based options, using ingredients like benzalkonium chloride, can be a suitable alternative, especially for younger children where ingestion risks might be a concern. However, Benzalkonium chloride sanitizers may require longer contact times than alcohol-based sanitizers to achieve effective germ kill.
The choice between these options should be determined by your school's specific needs. While alcohol-based sanitizers are generally more effective, non-alcohol-based products might be preferable in certain situations, such as for younger students or for use near food preparation areas.
Next, consider the sanitizer’s effectiveness against germs and ensure that any hand sanitizer you select is approved by the FDA. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates hand sanitizers as over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. This means that the FDA sets guidelines and standards for the formulation, manufacturing, labeling, and safety of hand sanitizers. The agency also monitors products on the market to ensure they comply with these standards, including verifying that they contain safe ingredients and appropriate concentrations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many hand sanitizers were produced that did not meet these rigorous standards. The FDA actually identified over 600 hand sanitizers to avoid due to safety concerns.
Also, consider the formula makeup. You’ll want it to be non-sticky and fast-drying. To say it plain and simple, children are picky. It is difficult enough as it is to get them to wash their hands and use hand sanitizer at the appropriate time. They’ll be more likely to use it if they like the consistency, feel, and smell of it, so select a hand sanitizer that isn't sticky. And, be sure to choose one that dries quickly - preferably in about 15-20 seconds.
Safety and skin sensitivity are also critical. Children are more prone to dry, irritated, cracked hands, and many suffer from eczema. Look for sanitizers that include moisturizers like aloe to help prevent skin irritation, especially with frequent use.
Avoid products with known allergens or irritants, particularly those that might cause adverse reactions in children with sensitive skin. Fragrance-free hand sanitizers are generally a good choice.
Environmental considerations are increasingly important today. Choose products with eco-friendly packaging and minimal environmental impact. Consider the disposal process and the potential effects on indoor air quality.
Accessibility and usability are key for effective hand hygiene. Ensure that the sanitizers are available in convenient forms-whether gel, foam, or wipes-and are easy to dispense. Touchless dispensers are an excellent choice to minimize contact and prevent cross-contamination. You may also consider bottle size. Large pump bottles are great for sharing in the classroom or in cafeterias. For students older than six, travel-sized bottles are available for personal use which students can keep at their desks or in their backpacks.
Cost is an essential factor. Evaluate the cost per unit and consider bulk purchasing options to optimize your budget.
By carefully considering these factors, facility managers can make informed decisions to maintain a safe and healthy school environment.
The right hand sanitizer not only protects against germs but also supports the well-being of students and staff.
