In this video, I show you how to calculate the best tire pressure to make your bike the most efficient, so that you can go the fastest with the least amount of effort. The Silca company has invented a tire pressure calculator, based on analysis of many different athletes, riding bikes with different tire sizes, to calculate the most efficient air pressure for a particular size of tire. All you need to do is go to the website and enter the dimensions of your tire and a few other details into the tire pressure calculator, and it will tell you the best tire pressure for front and rear tires on your bike to be the most efficient and the fastest. The most surprising thing about using this optimum bicycle tire pressure calculator is that the resulting tire pressure for my bikes is a lot lower than I was putting in the tires. I always assumed that over inflating the tires made them faster, but it actually creates more rolling resistance and vibration, and using lower tire pressure in your bicycle tires actually helps you go faster, and as a bonus, it’s also a lot more comfortable because the ride is much smoother.
Here is a link to the tire pressure calculator so you can measure your bike tires and figure out what the best pressure for them is.

This mirrors my experience too. I run 42mm on a gravel bike, and run the pressure around 27psi on gravel and 32psi on the road. Works well and gives a smooth ride - most of the time 😊

It’s great to know that it’s both more comfortable and more efficient. I wish I’d figured this out decades ago.

Note that the calculator is quite decent between 25-50mm. However, once you start going above that, especially above 55mm, you start going into too low pressure territory. It really needs to be tuned better at extremes.

I’d like to see them expand it and give us numbers for 20 x 4“ bike tires. I wonder what the most efficient setting for those is.

I did that as a child but soon learnt that increasing the pressure to make you go faster actually meant that with pressures way over they should be , when at speed when you went round corners you carried straight on because you’d reduced the contact patch so much you’d lost all grip , therefore landing up with a nasty gravel rash on your body , this is why motorcycle gp riders actually decrease their tyre pressures to keep a good contact patch at speed because the tyre will increase it’s pressure slightly as it warms up , sham the warm up lap 😊👍👍👍

I wish I’d figured this out 20 years ago. The bike is a lot more comfortable with less air in it, and it’s great to know that it’s also faster and more efficient.
