Destino Corea me and im still waiting for my order to come in for my boot. I found out today i have a fractured toe when its been 2 or 3 days since it happened. WARNING, when getting mad NEVER kick anything with your toe
I have broken three toes and all healed perfectly with no intervention at all. No tape, no boot...but I did wear comfortable jogging shoes (with lots of room) and a firm orthotic.
I broke my little toe last month, taped it to buddy toe. Untaped it after 2 weeks, still had pain. So taped it back again. After another 2 weeks the toe was good as new.
I tried a walking boot for my little toe fracture but it increased the pain because it's too tight around the toes. It's not effective at immobilising the toes either because they can still twitch or curl. A stiff-sole fracture shoe seems a better option.
I broke my “index” toe by smashing it on the floor jumping on a roof because I’m a genius… I then continued to pay soccer on it for 4 months without knowing
“Make sure you go to the dr to get a boot” Ok sure, lemme just drop 2 grand really quick on our broken heathcare system because my bed leg fucked me up this morning
I watched your video and instantly unwrapped my buddy tape and put on my stiff snow boats, they are so-far working great as a simple replacement, thanks for the quick and useful help
Thank you for this. Made me understand what exactly should be done. Broken big toe here 😅 I got a splint that goes behind my calf and under my foot and orthopedist wrapped it and my foot with a bandage. I came to another city, went to a different orthopedist yesterday who added buddy taping to my treatment but it was killing my healthy toe. it was so squished and painful, so I opened it. After watching this and seeing the boot I realized I could tape my splint to my foot instead of full wrapping that compresses my foot and makes me unwrap it every few hours and doesn’t let me sleep. I’m so happy and comfortable. I’d probably wrap it again during the day. But I’ll get a good night sleep now
You have changed my world. I broke my little toe two weeks ago and have buddy strapped it, because that is what my training always said to do. I have been in pain for all of those two weeks, until I put my foot into a boot. The pain stopped and now hopefully the break will heal. Thank you :-)
+Kerry Welch I'm glad we could help! I usually recommend that my patients stay in the boot for about 3 weeks, but you should work with your doctor to make sure it is healing well.
Hey,I broke my toe and I still went to doctor with covid. My area is a hotspot in the nation and it was very scary to me but what we did was go to a pediatrics and they helped us
Interesting!!! I just watched a video posted by a podiatrist suggesting buddy taping for a broken toe. Here's the thing. I broke the big toe on my right foot 18 months ago. Primary Dr. (who couldn't get me in for 2 weeks after the injury) suggested buddy tape or do nothing, stating there's not much you can do for a broken toe. Well, it's been 18 months, my big toe is still swollen. I have a boot in storage from previous STAR on the same foot. I'm going to get that boot out of storage today and do as you have suggested. If I don't see a change, I'm going to INSIST my primary write a referral to an Orthopeadic. Thank you for this video! P.S. There's no pain associated with the swelling because when I received my STAR (7 years ago) The STAR saved me from unbearable chronic pain from a shattered ankle. However, the procedure damaged the nerves in my foot and toes. I don't "feel" things correctly in this foot (if that makes sense) and my Big toe acts paralyzed (intermittently). Sometimes, I can't even feel if I have a shoe on. I have some funnies stories about that! Weird, I know. Regardless, my big toe should not still be swollen. My original surgeon is in MS. I'm in CA.
Good luck with the toe but if you boot it, I wish you better luck with dealing with the joint damage a boot does to your hips after wearing one for 6 weeks. I would much rather had a sore toe.
This is an important point. Wearing a boot can lead to knee, hip or back issues in some people. With proper precautions, however, a vast majority of patients have no trouble wearing a boot. The key is to use enough height in the shoe on the other foot to keep your hips even. We often recommend the use of heel lift in the shoe or even better is the use of an "Even-up" device to the shoe (you can see that here: amzn.to/1UBIfjo ). Almost everyone can wear a boot comfortably with this combination. A cane is also very helpful. Use it in the hand opposite the injury. Not properly treating a fractured toe is not a good option. While you would likely be in a boot only 3 weeks or so for a fractured toe, if it is not treated properly it can take months to heal or never heal completely. That can lead to a prolonged limp which itself has more potential to cause hip pain than a boot that is used properly.
Yes!! I agree, I wear the boot and my hips now hurt lots. It has a hight, why Drs don’t tell you about the dangers of walking and desalament of your hips!
I have a non-displaced fracture in the proximal phalanx of my fifth toe. It happened 2 months ago (March 8, 2017) after stubbing. I saw a doctor in a walk-in clinic the next day. He sent me for the xray and reported the fracture results. He said no treatment is necessary and I could go on a trip to Disney a few days later. So I ended up walking around on the foot a lot -- I wore crocs and had little to no pain. A month later, I still couldn't wear shoes and had a follow-up xray saying the fracture showed no signs of healing. My family doctor said to buddy tape and rest the foot for 2-3 weeks. I came across this RU-vid video and bought myself a short walking boot and saw a podiatrist, who said to wear it for 4 weeks. I did as I was told and then (checking with my family doc again), removed it. I had some pain the first few days, but it's getting better and the toe looks good. However, on my most recent xray (at 8 weeks), the fracture is still visible. I'm following up with my podiatrist, but would it be advisable to continue wearing the boot?
Get into a walking boot as soon as possible and go to a doctor to get an x-ray. It might be easiest to get into a podiatrist sports med clinic rather than going through NHS. Plus a podiatrist will be able to give you better information on getting back to activity as soon as possible. Good luck with the audition! @@Footankle hi ive broken my big toe a month and one week ago i chiped part of the distal bone at the joint off the bone that is closer to the nail in big toe and was wondering if pt my be needed and when will i be ably to walk agin in regular shoes sinse the break was not in the main joint in the big toe do i have a better chance of being ably to walk right please reply back thanks oh ive been in a walking boot for month and one week thanks
Crap, I just broke mine yesterday and ordered a immobilization shoe, but it's not the tall boot. It's the second toe by the big one abuse it sticks out past the big one. Will the shoe work or do I need the tall boot?
After a confirmed break the Urgent care gave me a sandal, but after watching your video I went to a thrift store and got a boot. My pain relief was immediate! Will use the sandal for showering. Thank you for posting this video!
Great video. Thanks for posting. I broke my fourth toe four weeks ago. Buddy taped it until the pain got worse then saw a orthopedic surgeon. The hospital properly taped it and I have been using a walking boot for two weeks. Have been elevating, resting and icing the foot. But, will the delay in treatment delay the healing? When should I stop using the boot? The doctor suggested that I go without now, and that walking will help it heal. Does that make sense if the toe still hurts?
This is best evaluated by xray. I usually keep toe fractures in a boot for 3 - 4 weeks. But bone can take months to go through the healing process and may hurt during that time.
I really want to go to our local walk in centre but my dad just says it's a bit of bruising u will live! I'm literally crying right now it hurts just sitting down. I'm not sure if it's a break or not but that's why u wanna go c the doctor's or get an x-ray or SOMETHING
thanks so much for your advise I had that tape on my toe for about two weeks, no wonder why I still have pain. I got the tall boot and i really comfortable.
Smashed my big toe into a iron block months ago, and ever since i can't do lunges(the exercise) and hurts when i go for long while. Guess i will have to get a walking boot. How long should you wear it?
I don't know if I broke or fractured my big toe and cannot afford a doctor at this time. I appreciate this video, and will try a boot if I can find one cheap or free. Otherwise, I'll stay off my foot as much as possible
Very informational video, is two weeks enough time off to start running/swimming again? I'm a lifeguard and start working in 2 weeks since the inury? I've been wearing a shoe that they gave me, it's not a walking boot, but it's a shoe to take pressure off
It depends on the injury. If there was a fracture I tell my patients not to run for 6 weeks. We give them alternative exercise like these: www.footankle.com/patients/exercise-foot-injury/
You saved my life! I knew something was wrong with just buddy taping and using the walking sandal. Exercising is really important to me so I didn't want to end up with a toe that didn't heal properly. For a broken pinkie toe that stopped hurting after 2 days, would you recommend a tall boot or a short boot.
Same, doctors treat this like it's nothing but I don't want problems with it later in life and pinky toe is important for my exercise, balance and even proper walking. I hope it will heal without cast or boot because they won't give it to me. I was tapped flat pace of wood under my toe and part of the foot, it's working for now (it doesn't hurt that way). It's hairline fracture. I will buy a boot if there's still a pain after about a week. Hope your little toe is fine by now.
Thank you for this. I badly stubbed my fourth toe and unfortunately a podiatrist in my area is simply out of my price range without health insurance ($250 just to be seen, plus $160 X-ray, and additional cost depending on what needs to be done for my foot - boot is $350, etc), so I went to an urgent care center where they taped my toes together and it resulted in far worse pain than I had before. I've stopped taping and ordered the boot you recommended, but unfortunately it won't be here for a few more days - so in total I won't begin wearing the boot until 1.5-2 weeks after the injury happened. When I went to the urgent care they physically inspected my toe, said it was probably a hairline fracture, but didn't take an X-ray because they said it wouldn't make a difference for treatment so suggested I didn't need one if I wanted to save money. I didn't have swelling or discoloration, simply ongoing pain that's been getting worse daily since I stubbed my toe and it hurts to bend it. Is it necessary for me to get an X-ray to make sure?
Many times I will forgo the x-rays to help keep costs low if the patient is going to use a walking boot anyway to protect the toe. We also offer a 20% discount on all care for self-pay patients, you may very well find a podiatrist near you who offers the same discount. Boots can usually be found for around $70. For now I think wearing the boot is most important, but if you are not getting better than the xray will be needed to see why you are not improving.
Foot & Ankle Center of Washington I really appreciate your response, thank you! That puts me at ease about the x-ray. Podiatrists like you are good to come by, if I lived closer I'd certainly see you. I really appreciated the recommendation for the boot and the article on your website so I knew I was getting the right thing and not inadvertently causing more damage. Thank you for your help!
I broke my little toe 2 and 1/2 weeks ago, I asked for a boot but was told they don't give them out because of blood clots. Have been taping my toes. Now have lower back and ankle pain, is it worth getting a boot at this stage?
I broke my middle left toe into 3 pieces, the back was broken in a way that swooped around the back in a spoon shape. I was a comminuted proximal fracture. It was also originally dislocated, odd story, my puppy relocated it for me on accident. I was walking forward and my toes went around one of her back legs & she turned and relocated it. Anyhow, I broken it in April, so almost 5 months ago, because of some crazy insurance mix ups it has taken a long time to really get it looked at. I finally just saw an orthopedic surgeon's PA. He said everything looked fine from the most recent x-rays, they were super milky colored and difficult to see the cracks... BUT I am still in pain. I did get a boot ASAP after it happened. I didn't even get to see how bad the break was until about a month or so ago... I had one specialist say I needed surgery & the other said that was absurd and surgery would not have been necessary at all... I was super cautious ⚠️ the whole time because I was so scared of surgery... I know swelling in normal for a long time, but the pain is so confusing for me, I was only told to try and normalize the use of it, but it still really hurts... I also was told the boots can cause arthritis, so because of that I tried to only use it when absolutely necessary. My body naturally forces me to walk on the side of my foot, I don't even notice till it hurts... I FeeL stupid & confused about what to do... I have been of from my hobby job as a server, at a restaurant this whole time & am too scared to go back yet... I also noticed at times buddy taping hurt it bad, I got a stinging pain afterwards... How are you now? How long did it take to heal are you still in pain ???
i need some advise... if you are reading this, I have a kind of lump on my 3rd toe so i am going to the doctors tommorow also my 2nd and 3rd toes are red and a little purple. Should i got to (What we call in UK) A&E aka emergency room is it broken???? thx for reading x
Doctor, pls, I broke my little toe 6 days ago. Went to ER, they did X-ray and confirm my predictions. They buddy taped my 2 little toes together and told me to see a podiatrist, together with a sandal. I went to the podiatrist who buddy taped them also, with a silicon separator btw them and sold me a small boot. When it was my turn to do the buddy toe, I didn’t use the separator anymore because it was too big. I used a little peace of cotton, instead. Last night I woke up with pain and removed the dressing and let the foot in the air. I took ibuprofen and could sleep a bit. I don’t want to use the boot for sleeping. Can I just skip the dressing and use the boot with a sock ? Thanks a lot !!
While playing football I twist my toe completely, so I like touch it it's still twisted but not as much as it was before. And now it swelled and it have been 17 our past
Thanks for sharing the info. Dropped a heavy dresser on my big toe 2 times in a row. 😅 Went to the doctors 2 days after, and got an x ray the next day. They didn't offer or recommend any boot tho. I'm exhausted & feeling more pain using a cane all day. Almost ready to crawl everywhere. From the start I wanted to be cautious and wished I had crutches so I could avoid using my foot completely. But we don't have any. Hoping I can get a boot and/or crutches sometime soon. I don't want to cause any more damage or delay healing.
How long do you wear the boot ? I got three broke toes and the workers comp dr is telling me to put on steel toes and go back to work on week 5 and I still can’t bend my toes or feel them and get sharp pain if I put weight on them
I am at a loss. I have a comminuted fractured great toe that happened 11 weeks ago when I table crashed down on it. I have been to the orthopedic a few times. Said to stop wearing the protective shoe (not boot) i have been wearing and don't tape it up. Leave it loose. Well, here I am 11 weeks of agony. My nail is still bruised and my toe is swollen most days. I don't know if the there will be a new nail but this one is not loose yet. I really don't know what else to do. Do I really need to wear a boot up to my knee? I already have back and hip issues and I had surgery on both knees. Thanks for the video. And hope you have some insight for me.
Today is February 16 2024 4:25 am. I just just got back to the house from the ER. I broke my toe on my left foot. I will be call of tomorrow to make an appointment. If they do not offer the walking boot I will buy one myself. This is my very first time with a broken bone. I want it to heal properly. Thank you for your video
I stubbed my little toe almost a month ago. I finally went to my primary doctor as it was my only option to be seen without waiting an additional 2 weeks. My little toe is fractured and she put me in a soft shoe. Is this going to work as well as the large boot.
Looney Tunes Our recommendation for all toe fractures is the the use of a walking boot. Boots do the best job at stabilizing both the bones of the toe and the muscles that insert into them. We see much faster healing and return to activity with a boot. Here is an example from our store of the type of boot we recommend: www.ourdoctorstore.com/footankle/darco-fx-pro-stirrup-walker-high-profile/66/
How long does it take to heal once you’ve got a boot? I just saw a Ortho Dr. on Monday morning, I broke the small little toe a week ago. Im visiting my brother in nyc in December and I’m praying my toe heals by then. 😩
+mickeys world Your welcome. Buddy taping is a very accepted treatment for broken toes but broken toes heal faster with less pain if they are immobilized completely. We have our patients wear a walking boot for the first 2 - 3 weeks. Happy new year and try not to break any more toes!
Can anyone shed some light on this ...... I had been buddy-taping the two toes next to my big toe and almost immediately started feeling that I was aggravating my big toe and the entire area near it. It wasn't long before that was all inflamed. Then that subsided. But now I'm having trouble with the entire foot and I'm blaming it all on overcompensating... Mostly because of this taping issue. Does this sound familiar or common to anyone?
Is it okay to put off the boot for a while when go to bath or go to toilet? Currently at one week using the boot after watch your video doc because i dont want surgery. My injury caused by a motorcycle accident that broke my right 4 small toes.
So I have a broken toe and I have a boot but when I take it off my feet are numb and my toe feels fine. Is that because I’m not putting pressure and haven’t used it for a while or what?
I recovered completely from a broken toe (heard it snap and it was wonky) in about 7 weeks. After 5 weeks I was able to do a 25km trail race on it but it was uncomfortable on the rougher sections. I was barefoot or in minimalist sandals the whole time. Couldn't figure out if tape helped or not so did it intermittently.
Hi...My daughter hurt her pinkie toe 5/22 (over a month ago)...I had it xrayed today and it is a fracture. It is still swollen and hurts only when pushed on. Her primary said to put her in a walking boot for 2-4 weeks. Please confirm this will help even with so much time that has gone by.
My pinkie toe just did a 90 degree break and it was gnarly. Thankfully I have a boot, but I also taped because it kept trying to go back the wrong direction. 😢
I have a broken pinky toe on my right and they told me just to buddy tape it and on my left, I have a heel contusion if they say I have to get a boot would I be in a wheelchair cause im in a cast on my left foot
Hi, I'm a teenager with no medical conditions . I fractured my middle toe a week ago:( how long would it take for an oblique, displaced fracture on my middle toe to heal and how long does it take for me to get back into sports?
In general, fractures take about 6 weeks to get back to about 85% of previous strength and 8 weeks to get close to 100%. Most important part of going back to sports is to get a doctors ok. But it is usually 8 weeks or so for fractures.
Who has a good story for their broken toe? I accidentally left the basement door open to do laundry. My old, senile dog (who normally avoids stairs) decided to follow me... she fell superman style all the way down. By the time I ran to the stairs she had already landed. Kicked my pinky toe on the last stair... badly. She is fine, thank God!! My toe however.....😢
I broke the big toe and index toe and I’m a it’s been 3 weeks now and it has gotten way better I can walk but the buttom of my foot feels tender a little and sore , also the index toe has a circle bruise mark but I can move it , do I wait longer or do my activity’s ??
I have a fractured big toe at the moment. I have been wearing a boot and i am wondering how long i will have to wear it? My doctor says 6-8 week recovery time but I dont think ill have to wear the boot that long right? I've tried wearing shoes already and it doesnt really hurt while walking....
+AmSyndicate Your doctor will help you determine how long to wear it based on your exam and xrays. In general, however, patients wear a boot for a fractured toe usually between 3 - 8 weeks depending on the severity and how it is healing.
I broke my pinkie toe is abnormal walking boot that goes about a third way up my leg good enough? And it's not a clean break that makes my toe crooked so how long would it be.
This was so helpful. Thank you. I have a very painful butterfly fracture on my 4th toe. It is buddy-taped, but I'm not walking on it at all. I can't; it's too painful. I'm using crutches. My doc told me to be careful about the very thing you mentioned. I bought a boot, but it only goes up past my ankle, not all the way up. My doc said that was enough to stabilize my ankle and foot. Is that so? (He's a GP, not a specialist, which he was careful to say.) Is buddy taping inherently bad, or is it just that then people flex their foot, thinking they've done what they're supposed to? My toe sorta flops over, so taping it seems to help it stay upright!
Thank you so so very much. I just broke my pinky toe on my right foot. I have a condition that I don’t know where my feet and hands are in space in time. So I’m constantly injuring my feet and I have the very boot you said to have so it’s on my foot And I think you so very much
My toe next to my big toe has been broke for about 3 years. I just thought I stubbed it didn't swell up however I noticed it's now the top part of the toe knuckle it's bent so it actually points almost to the right and so I guess the tip is broke and I can't Walk on it I actually walk on my heel but I didn't go to the doctor because when I had my Bunyan surgery the doctor put a pin in my toe and I told him not to do it because I'm allergic to metals and of course he did it and I had an allergic reaction. So he had to go in and remove it and I had a cast on for an additional 6 weeks Then I still had a lot of pain shooting up my leg so he said he was gonna go in and do a wash because maybe taking out the metal it left some debris in my foot because I was still in a lot of pain outside of my Bunyan so I had 3 surgeries for just a simple Bunyan removal..... That was probably 20 years ago and it still hurts but that's a separate issue but that kind of put me off from going from getting this toe looked at. I'm 60 years old I don't drive I don't go anywhere because I have osteoporosis and hip issues so I play it safe and stay home And I haven't stubbed my toes anymore but I have to walk on my heel on that foot so I'm very conscientious of it but it's annoying sometimes
I just want to say I knew better than the doctors, because I knew I should have had a boot. They couldn’t even tell it was broken (I went to two doctors and got 2 different x rays). They gave me pain killers to go back to work, but my body was trying to tell me something was wrong. I now have a messed up toe. What do I do now?
So sad, and kind of a similar story, mine only looked broken when it was dislocated, but after relocating it, it looked normal but hurt/hurts still...
What do I do while sleeping? The boot is Awesome throughout the day. I however can’t sleep with it though. I must be scrunching my toes while I sleep cause I wake up and it hurts pretty bad. The boot on all day and it feels great. What do I do?
I have my patients use a night splint like this one: amzn.to/4fPCnVW It's much smaller and lighter than a walking boot and easier to sleep with. It will still protect your toe.
This video is extremely helpful and saved me from a huge taping my big toe mistake. My door fell off my refrigerator and landed on my foot mainly my right big toe and the one next to it. I have bruising up the side, top, and all around my toes. unfortunately this is a 72 old incident and I'm not able to go to the doctor for three more days. Should I be worried about a purplish bluish skin tone that comes when I've been walking around and once I rest and elevate my foot it disappears and my skin tone returns to a normal looking bruises. help! super worried over here
+Laura Hitchcock Purplish skin tone is usually due to bruising, but that's just one of those things that will need to be examined to be determined if it is anything to worry about. See a doctor as soon as you can (preferably a podiatrist or orthopedist) and try to keep it immobilized in a walking boot until you do. BTW, OUCH! Good luck!
I just spoke with my primary care doctor and they blew me off and told me to just buddy tape it as well. I can't even bend or wiggle my pinky toe and I had a spiral fracture in the same toe several years before.
Thanks for the advice. Today i hurt all five of my toes on my right foot while in a karate class. It still hurts like hell. I just finished soaking it in a tub of hot water with epsom-salt and a whole bottle of rubbing alcohol to draw the soreness out. I think im going to see my doctor as you suggested.
First, the best treatment initially for sports injuries is usually RICE - Rest, ice, compression and elevation. Hot water should be avoided. It will usually increase swelling and pain. Rubbing alcohol does nothing but dry out your skin Go see your doctor.
@ Foot & Ankle Center of Washington Hi I've broken my little toe and have read about still using a exercise bike using the ball of foot(which I tried with no pain) would this be bad for the healing of the toe?
I think an exercise bike is ok since you are not moving your toe much. It would be best to wear stiff soled biking shoes rather than running shoes. Good luck!
I stubbed my toe yesterday and I stubbed it again today it really hurts. I am a dancer and it really hurts to put the toe in my ballet shoe. So I don't know if I should get a boot. I also am over using my heel because I can put weight on my toe. Should I get a boot?
Dr, My leg 5th finger got hit in a furniture(teapove) got broken( second time same finger got hitten) and it is not attached to other finger its wide, had gone to dr,taken xray, at the time they were no main dr , 1 dr had just my leg finger adjust and put my 5 finger to 4rt finger using a strap, it's being around dec 25 - Feb 5, after replacing strap still it's not around 4rt finger, also my whole leg being week due to less walking, its plastering good to avoid this condition
Thanks for the info. I have 3 broken toes from a car accident, the smallest toe and the 2 small ones next to it. The Orthopedic I went to see in Botswana placed me in a walking boot half the size of the one shown in this video on the day of the accident (23 May 2016). the swelling and pain is still very much prevalent even though I never once removed the walking boot for sleeping/showering. I went to see the Orthopedic for a check up yesterday and he advised 1) I start taking it off when I sleep and shower, as well as when I'm at home. 2) I start moving my toes and start trying to walk with the boot on and sometimes when its off. I haven't had the boot on for 20 plus hours and the swelling isn't going down. I have a very bad blister on my heel from constantly resting my foot on it especially during sleep. and underneath the sole of my feet (slightly underneath the middle fractured toe), it seems to have hardened and it hurts when I touch it. Is everything going okay? Swelling is still quite bad and its been 3 weeks.
It's hard to give you a great answer without seeing you, but one thing you can try that helps many people is to use an arch support in the boot to transfer pressure off of the toe area and onto the arch. You didn't say when the accident was, but I would keep my patients in a boot after this type of injury at least 4 weeks.
+erbphoto17 If you already have the short one it is fine. I like the tall ones better because most of my patients find them a lot more comfortable. A lot of people complain that the short ones put too much pressure on your shins. But if you already own the short one it will work fine to protect your toe.
I broke and dislocated my little toe 8 months ago by running into a door frame.... I wore a shoe that stops my foot from moving and strapped it up.... is it normal for me having bad pains in my foot/toe ??
I am a dancer and I landed with my toe folded under my foot and I heard a loud crunch! It it my toe next to my largest toe. It is my longest toe and it hurts really bad but my mom said it's fine!? Could it be broken? I'm not getting a boot or going to the doctor though cause my mom said no. She's a vet and when I broke my arm she made a cast at home cause she had suplies. How do I treat it without my mom knowing?
Lock and Kee OUCH! Here's the problem, it does sound like it could be broken and if the break goes into the joint then it could cause a long term problem like arthritis. Or the bone may have to be reset a little for best healing. If you can, see if you can get your mom to watch the video. It is best to get an x-ray to make sure the joint isn't involved and then to wear a walking boot to limit motion. The boot is simply a cast that let's you continue to walk around. Something like this one does the best job at protecting your toe. @66. I don't know how you can treat this correctly without her seeing you are wearing a boot. If you can't get the x-ray at least see if she will get you a boot to wear for a few weeks. Good luck!!!
I broke my 5th proximal phalanx on my right foot one week ago. I did see an orthopedic doctor, who did not even suggest the boot (even though I couldn't put any weight on my foot without pain) until I mentioned that I have to walk around all day at work. He gave me the walking boot and now I can walk without crutches and have returned to work, since I figured if I can walk, I can probably work. However, I work in health care and even with the boot, I'm still having pain after a long day at work. My question is: Do you think that walking in the boot at work and sometimes doing things like lifting patients (putting pressure on that foot) will slow my progress? I do want to heal as soon as possible and not have any lasting pain. If the boot is on, does it matter if I'm on my feet all day or not? Any advice is appreciated; I don't feel I got a clear answer from my doctor. Thank you in advance; I'm so happy to have found this video. A lot of people have been asking me why I'm wearing the boot as they seem to think it's "overkill" for my broken toe, but I'm so grateful for the boot!
+Hilary L Hey Hilary - Obviously since I can't examine you this is only general information, but as long as you are in the boot and the toe is not moving you should be well protected. Bone heals best when it doesn't move (no matter how small the bone). Moving at work probably will not cause any problems. To reduce pain in the boot I have all of my patients with broken toes use an arch support in the boot to transfer pressure off of the ball of the foot and toe region. You want to use a pretty rigid arch support with a fairly high arch to best transfer pressure. The one I put most of my patients in is this one: www.ourdoctorstore.com/footankle/prolab-p3-podiatrist-designed-orthotics-full-length/ . Also, ice the toe every every night after work. The boot is the only way to go. I can't tell you how many patients we see every week who are still having pain from a toe fracture after months because it wasn't properly immobilized.
Dr. Larry I've been staying completely off my foot for 4+ weeks now. I also leave the boot on all the time, even while sleeping. I have 2 quick questions: 1) My big toe still hurts with movement after 4+ weeks of complete rest. Is that a bad sign? 2) Even while I'm wearing the boot, my toe will occasionally move/hurt. Does that stop the healing process? I really don't know how to immobilize it even more. Thank you!!
It's not uncommon that these hurt for several months although they should be continually getting better. However, the most important thing is to have your foot doctor take a follow-up xray and make sure it is healing normally. Occasional minor movement of the toe in the boot is usually not a problem.
@@Footankle I ve broken mine pinky yesterday and the Doctor did an xray and give me bandage but no walking boot. What about if I just lay down on the bed with no pressure on the foot for the next 3 weeks because I do not have to go anywhere before my next app. Is that the same?
The head of my metatarsal feels basically like it's severed. How long do you think it would take to heal if I apply zero pressure? Spending money is not an option.
I dropped a 10 pound weight from about 5 feet on my toe, about 7 hours in and it still hurts as bad as after it happened, starting to get a bit purple and swelling, don't know if it's a fracture or a break
I broke my big toe a couple days ago.. Didnt see a doctor and used the home treatment recommendations; the pain as gone down and I'm able to walk but the discoloration is still there and it still hurts a bit. Do I still need to see a doctor? It seems like its on its way to healing. (I'm concerned about any long term damage). Thanks!
+chuxsa You are exactly right - the most important reason to see a doctor is to confirm there is nothing going on that will cause long-term damage. For example, a fracture that extends into a joint is a much bigger deal than one that doesn't as it is more likely to lead to arthritis later in life. Also you need to make sure the bone is not displaced at all. Keep wearing the boot and make an appointment to get the toe checked out.
I stubbed my last two toes this morning and as the day went on, I noticed that the pain was increasing. I took my sock off and was horrified to see that my last two toes are black and red! Yikes!!
How can I help straighten out an old toe fracture (told to TAPE it by my Podiatrist) now it’s curling up and forming a had bunion on top of the joint. Got any suggestions? Also, because it’s so disfigured I get a lot of pain with any shoe that rubs on it.
Impossible to say without an exam. Please see a foot and ankle specialist to have an evaluation, get a definitive diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan.
I broke my middle toe on my right foot and they need to go in and do surgery because the two bone pieces aren't aligned and it's because some soft tissue is between the bones so it won't heal right. I'm getting the surgery in 2 days which is fine but they told me to buddy tape it like you said, put my foot on pillows while home, use crutches, and they also gave me this shoe thingy that's supposed to help me step. Its not a boot but just a special shoe. Is that alright or should I get the boot?
are these boots one size fits all? How do you know it fits you properly? The earliest appt to see a Dr. If Feb 16 although i know it's broken via Xray at urgent care.
Most brands have four sizes - small, medium, large or extra large. They all fit either foot. If you know you have a broken toe, you should get into a boot as soon as possible.
