In this video I put my son's idea to the test. My son, Adam Rhein is an accomplished artist blacksmith living in Cody Wyoming. I found this old pair of Husky dikes in the dirt on his property. He said it would be no problem getting them back to new if I just soaked them in white vinegar.

Vinegar works great, just don't forget and leave something in it for weeks because it is an acid and will eat the metal too.

Vinegar works faster if you leave it out in the hot sun. Baking soda neutralizes the acid. Citric acid is probably better. There's also electrolytic rust removal too if you like this Mr. Wizard stuff. There they say to use washing soda but baking soda works.

Maybe even better way could be to boil it in water, to turn some of that red rust oxide into black oxide.. gun black! after boiling, brush excess off and with wd40/oil get them moving again. the black oxide finish should be durable, and keep the oil so it wont rust easily.. also should look good :)

You can use vinegar to kill weeds as well.

Remove the grip covers. Hand wire brush the loose rust, then either electrolysis or rust remover. The wire brush again with a bench grinder/wire brush.

Thanks for your comment. I was unable to remove the handles. I don't know about electrolysis and what is simpler than white vinegar to remove the rust? No wire wheel work needed. Please consider subscribing.

@@markerhein The grip covers can be cut off and replaced with heat shrink tubing. Vinegar will work, but it's really slow. Evaporust is good also. For electrolysis just search youtube for a video. If you decide to try it, use Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate). Do not use SALT. That will give off Chlorine Gas. Washing Soda would be in the laundry aisle at the stores. Or you can use Baking Soda (not as effective) or bake it first to make Sodium Carbonate. Either one will work and only give off Carbon Dioxide and make Sodium Hydroxide in the water bath. Another method is to use Phosphoric Acid in a suitable sized container and soak the tool. CocaCola and other soft drinks have Phosphoric Acid as an ingredient. Or even use Muriatic Acid (Hydrochloric Acid). Also at the Big Box stores at about 30% acid. Should be found with pool chemicals or the garden center. Use caution and wear protective gloves. Gives off Hydrogen gas when removing rust. That should only done outside or in a well ventilated room. Just search youtube and decide method is the which the easiest for you.

I just don't understand how they got rusted like that. As an electrician, I rely on my pliers to pay my bills. Understanding not everyone does, but man, you paid for those.

Those were made with regular steel. Modern tools are Chrome Moly Steel and don't rust.

I’m sorry, but maybe I wasn’t clear. I found those pliers in the dirt on my son‘s property in Wyoming. How they got there, I have no idea. But they were rusted beyond what I thought could be fixed up and so I considered it a challenge to make these pliers work again.

They got left outside. It happens.

I would just stick it in to a wire brush wheel.

That’s what I thought all my life. But that vinegar really did remove the rust completely without any effort.
