In this video, I talk about the main ways to play emulation on the go -- on a cellphone (with or without a wireless controler), on a modded PSP, on original hardware with a flashcart, and on a Chinese emulation device such as the GPD XD

I will tell you the fatboy PSP was a lifesaver during my time in the military. Having access to thousands of games and being able to carry it around with me everywhere was absolutely amazing. I killed off SO many RPGs! I'm not sure if power banks existed back then, or if I just didn't know about them.... but having one of those is the only other thing that would have made it that much more perfect. These days I alternate between my phone, tablet, and PSP GO. Great video brother.
@TheIzzyNobreShow
@TheIzzyNobreShow 6 лет назад
No power banks back then -- or at least none that would allow you to charge a regular PSP, due to its proprietary charge port -- but one option would be to buy spare batteries and keep them all charged. Which, in a way, it's kind of more practical because its batteries are much smaller than a power bank. Thank you for stopping by! I never stopped to think that portables are so important to servicepeople.

Oh yeah man they were great for deployments and field exercises with all the downtime. It's not the case anymore, but anytime you would go to a Gamestop around a military base, you'd see TONS of PSP games and consoles because of that.

but not that fast. the 3ds emulating nds games is much faster. and for contrast, 3ds cant run ps1 emulator that good too. ps vita can emulate ps1 games nicely though as well as psp games. so if you want to emulate nds nicely > pick 3ds. if you want to emulate psp as well as ps1 > psvita

The Xperia Play is probably one of the most underrated portable emulation devices out there. $50 on ebay, and it'll emulate anything up to the PS1 very well. Even some PSP games are playable if you don't mind frame skip. I really wish they'd make a successor to it with top of the line specs.

The batery of the psp is decent enough 4-5 hours. But probably the best one here is the DS-lite that could get up to 15-19 hours in the lower settings. Best baterry life ever has to go to the game boy color though, up to 30 hours. It wasn't here but i wanted to mention it lol

I usually never comment videos on youtube, but this one peaked my interest. Many years ago I had a device called the GP2X, that I believe was the successor to the GamePark 32. I have many fond memories of that device, but it struggled with systems such as the SNES and the GBA because it wasn't powerful enough to keep a steady framerate on those systems at that time. However, the Sega Genesis and the Sega Master System worked flawlessly. I also used the PSP for some time for emulation (the original design), but I didn't like playing 2D games like Sonic on it because the screen had ghosting issues that I noticed a lot better on 2D games than on 3D games. Many years ago I had a flash-cart for the GBA called the XROM. I had 3 of those, and I had to connect the GBA to my PC with a special cable (from the GBA network-port to the PC usb) while having the XROM-cart inside the GBA to transfer roms from the PC to the XROM-cart itself. It took a long time flashing the roms over; maybe somewhere between 30min to an hour or longer (don't remember the specifics). The Pandora was the last handheld I used for emulation before migrating over to the smartphone. I had some issues with that device (didn't like the display quality and many other things), later on I ordered the iControlPad which was the first smartphone gamepad I ever had. Nowadays, I use my Samsung Galaxy S5 with the 8bitdo SN30 Pro controller, with a clip-on holder for the phone itself. I have tried many smartphone gamepads over the years, but most of them in my experience had poor build quality.

@GAG091186
@GAG091186 6 лет назад
I remember reading about the gp2x wiz way back. The thing that might had put me off buying the gp2x wiz, may be the design choice of two d-pads instead of the more common design of a single d-pad on the left and 4 action-buttons on the right. If it wasn't for that, I'm sure the gp2x wiz would also be in my collection (I'm quite picky, but I do love OLED-screens).

You can also get a telescopic controller for your phone, which holds your phone in the center like a PS Vita. Plus, it allows you play DS games in portrait mode. I think an android phone with that sort of a controller takes the cake. You're carrying g your phone around anyway, and if you pick another device to emulate, might as well switch it a controller. The best part is, you can still play games even without the controller with the in screen controls, which aren't so bad if you're emulating stuff like the GBA or 2D PS1 games.

You can also emulate GB, GBC, Game Gear and Master System pretty well on a DS flash cart, and NES, PC engine and PCE CD relatively well too... It's not ideal but it's all I have, although I kind of haven't used my DS Flash Cart in a pretty long time because the 3DS's own library (including Virtual Console games) is more than good enough to hold my attention when I'm out and about... And speaking of the 3DS, if you hack one you can also emulate a ton of stuff in it, but I haven't tried that yet because I'm afraid of bricking my 3DS and I don't wanna get my Nintendo account banned...
@ExtraordinaryJam
@ExtraordinaryJam 6 лет назад
Michirin9801 what about snes on DS lite?
@Michirin9801
@Michirin9801 6 лет назад
If you have a DStwo cart (which I do) SNES and GBA are doable, but you won't want to emulate the SNES, it's unbearably slow and the sound is butchered beyond recognition... As for GBA it's passable, you get about 30 fps at best, but if you have a GBA flash cart use that instead, you'll get much better results...
@ExtraordinaryJam
@ExtraordinaryJam 6 лет назад
Michirin9801 is it better to have 3ds then for emulators?
@Michirin9801
@Michirin9801 6 лет назад
If you can hack it, then probably yeah... I have no experience with 3DS homebrew yet, but I hear New 3DS/2DS models are way better for emulation, they can handle a lot more systems and they get more support from homebrewers, but even the old 3DS will probably do better than the DS lite or DSi, because you know, it can actually run SNES...
@ExtraordinaryJam

The GPD win can do anything a computer can. So it can also emulate anything, and with a build in xbox controller it's just brilliant. Wait for the GPD win 2 though because there are a lot of upgrades that were needed :p
@voteDC
@voteDC 5 лет назад
The problem with the GPD Win is that it just isn't that good a Windows computer. I bought one because I wanted a mobile device that would be capable of playing all of Telltale's the Walking Dead series and the first three are fine but the Final Season is just on the wrong side of playable even with everything on the lowest possible settings. Also while it is capable of playing Gamecube it really isn't a nice experience. The systems I would consider playable on the GPD Win are also playable on the GPD XD but for a far lower price. I am really tempted for the Win 2 however simply because the controller just looks so much more comfortable to use, I find the originals just a horrible experience.

Struggles on Android is a very loose statement. We have phones coming out new with 1gb of ram and then we have phones coming out with 8gb of ram and all sorts of different things come into play with how well emulation works on Android. OnePlus5T & Razer Phone are both emulation beasts for the under 600$ range

Not really, on Android there's the PPPSSPP emulator and it's really great and usable. It just depends on your specs. I would not play pokemon on an emulator, but other titles ok. Pokemon in emulator can't trade unless you can emulate 2 games at once and the trading. Otherwise no trade evolutions and no version exclusives. I also like the 3ds virtual console and found an interesting title called earthbound on it, it was originally an snes title. I don't have this, but a ps vita has a lot of titles available for it on the sony store, it has a library of ps1, ps2, psp, and ps vita titles and you don't need to emulate sony titles. The 3ds and the ps vita will play a large number of titles before you have to emulate anything and all of that is totally legit. There is a hyperkin supaboy sfc a great device that can play snes titles on the go.

Imo n3ds is best. With CFW I'm able to inject any rom (nes, snes, gb, gba) into a virtual console game, and n3ds is able to emulate ps1 games pretty well (I've been playing ff7 and it's 100% playable)

It's better than flashcarts, too, since you don't have to navigate the confusing menus and wait for the game to load. When you inject the games, they sit on the main menu just like any of your other downloaded games.

i love emulators but i just use my phone. it's the most convenient. something that i'm seriously waiting for someone to properly do is an emulator for ps2. it easily has the biggest library of any consoles and so many good games are on there. i hope they finish one soon i will easily give them my money... if it runs relatively smooth

have you tried playing games on modern pcsx2 dev builds? at least in my experience, running on software renderers turned out to be a good experience (it keeps the native resolution of ps2, but it greatly reduces glitches). currently playing yakuza 2 on pc

yes i have heard of the pcsx2, but i was actually referring to an emulator for portable devices. From my understanding current phones don't have the power to run an emulator like this yet, but like i said if someone could find a way to make one work. i would easily hand over my money to them

Izzy Nobre that's odd - I've been using a PC to emu since the 90s. Yes, it requires a bit more setup at times, but the reason I mentioned it was if you're willing to put up with the bulk of a GPD device you also have a fully functional PC to boot (pun intended). 😉
@TheIzzyNobreShow
@TheIzzyNobreShow 6 лет назад
I used PCs for emulation back in the day, too, but that’s because that’s all we had back then. Android emulation ends up being easier to setup and navigate.
@claire4760
@claire4760 6 лет назад
My only problem with the GPD Win is the controller feels really scrunched up with the keyboard taking up most of the space...Also the L3, R3 button sucks...and the 300 dollar pricetag...It's not for me, I guess...It's crazy how all these handhelds are cheap though...Emulation today is so easy and affordable.

Great video, I just want to point out something, the GBA micro and that GBA clone you showed aren't exactly emulating games, they're just loading the rom into the ram and play them like they were supposed to be played from an original cartridge, so it's not technically emulation.

I personally play most of my emulators on my new 3ds XL. The only two downsides as supposed to a psp are that you currently can't play N64 games on it and PS1 games run VERY slowly. Finally the setup is completed by a DS Flashcard inside of the 3ds and practically every 3ds-game I own installed onto my micro SD card.

It's almost always the best experience playing games on their original hardware. That said the amount of systems I have is getting ridiculous, so I should probably look into this. The phone is a no Brainer to at least try. it's more powerful than a Switch, but the issue is carrying around a separate controller.
@ImTheBatchMan
@ImTheBatchMan 6 лет назад
Look into modding your 3ds. Like you, the few systems I don't have sitting in my apartment are at my parents' house. The capabilities of the 3ds and the modding scene there has been a godsend. I throw my 3ds in my backpack and I have hundreds of games at my disposal. Plus, it's as close to the original hardware as you can get. It's practically the same as the DS, and the controller layout is the same as the GBA and GBC.

Woah there!!! A PHONE IS MORE POWERFUL THAN A SWITCH!??!!!?!!?!?!!? UNLESS you have a PHONE with a Tegra chip no phone will come close to the switch. There are a few TABLETS with that chip but not a single phone. (The Nintendo Switch has an NVIDIA Tegra Chip too) (Please don't get mad at me for getting "mad" (and maybe or maybe not ruining your whole meaning of life) )

Love your PSP description, still own a very old black PSP which I have used to give my very first (and kind of shabbiest) flame paint job. Over the years I've had to replace the UMD tray and Battery lid, although I've mainly used it to emulate SNES. I just couldn't put down Chrono Trigger nor Star Fox/Lylat Wars. A few years later I got a psp lite to play new games, since I just didn't want to patch past the part of running all homebrew :) though actually it got much less mileage overall. It's really a great machine for SNES emulation. In a way, I find it ironic that a piece of Sony hardware does this so well ;)
