Your way of getting into the hobby was very similar to mine. Before you said something I knew what was coming next. From the discovering BGG to the obsession phase (which never ends). 😄 My friend Denver invited me round to his brother’s place around 14 years ago to play an unknown game called The Settlers of Catan with the Seafarers expansion. It was so much fun. The session had such an effect on me I couldn’t sleep that night. Something woke up in me that I never knew was asleep. At the end of the month I bought my own copy of the base game. The following month I got the two expansions Seafarers and Cities & Knights. It’s been bliss ever since.

Thanks for sharing your journey into the hobby. For me, as someone from the States who lived in Japan for several years, one of the first games I picked up was Hanamikoji. I didn't know a thing about the game, but I did know where Hanamikoji (the street) was. That game and Pandemic were two of my first modern board games and I will never get rid of them because they bring back so many memories. And they were so hard to learn, lol! (Wingspan was really hard too!) I love how board games give me and my friends something fun to do away from our "devices." We bring lots of snacks, talk and laugh a lot....so games cansometimes take a while to get through. That's part of the fun, though. It's all about eating and socializing. 😄 Anyway, I look forward to watching your channel grow and seeing what you do next!

The Pringles wink got a laugh and a sub, well done. And clearly all civilized Pringles connoisseurs know option A is how Pringles were designed to be enjoyed. Would you eat an ice cream cone holding the scoop and eating the cone first? I don't think so.

Carly...I just stumbled across you today and I watched this video...and literally had tears in my eyes. You are speaking right into my heart! I have almost the exact same story as you...I accidentally came across board games at the beginning of this year and now we have over 30 games! We have 3 kids and have always wanted to be a "low tech" family and this has changed our lives immensely! We play multiple times a week, go to cafes to play, and I have never seen my children happier. I am SO grateful that you are here in this space and I very much look forward to your future content.

Second comment!! 🥳 I'm so glad you're starting this RU-vid journey, Carly! You're an absolute natural on camera and the video quality is truly so impressive for your first long-form video! 👏 p.s. Here's to the friends in our lives who introduced us to board games! I bet your friends could have never guessed that you would become so obsessed with board games and eventually start your own board game RU-vid channel! ☺ Thank you for sharing your "origin story" with us! Really looking forward to seeing your channel take off! It's inevitable! 🚀 Oh, and absolutely option A for how to eat a Pringle, obviously! That method allows the chip to naturally conform to the contour of your tongue/inner mouth for maximal comfort while option B forces the sharp, convex edges of the chip up against one's soft palate... very unenjoyable! 😣

Wow, Arnak is an impressive first purchase! The first game I researched and bought before playing was Love Letter. Slightly smaller... 😂 I actually made a slow transition from card games. We grew up playing traditional card games like Euchre, Hearts, 500 (popular game in Australia) and I was always obsessed with them. I think being given Sushi Go and then Qwirkle was the turning point that got me into modern board games.

I'm gonna go with option A on the Pringles . I did, like many people get introduced to board games like Monopoly and The game of Life as a kid, but I was never a true fan. I played a few games with my kids as well--- things like Hungry Hippo and Bed Bugs. Around 2019 I was shopping at the half-priced bookstore and saw two games that looked really interesting to me. "The Others," which seemed really dark and had interesting miniatures but was super expensive for something I had no idea how to play or if I would like and the other was a game called "Crows", which I thought was different because it had tiles for the board. I tried to learn how to play it on my own but eventually went to RU-vid for help and discovered top 10 lists and that there were literally thousands of other games besides Uno and Battleship (lol, I still like Battleship). Anyway, I'm definitely a fan now!

I love your story of how you came into the hobby! Especially the part about finding joy connecting with other people through games. Here's an abbreviated version of my story: I was hardcore into videogames, and thought of board games as the older hobby- Monopoly, Clue, etc. Then I read an article (in a videogame magazine) about the best board games of the year, and one of them was Unmatched: Battle of Legends. It sounded cool, so I looked more into it, and learned they had more sets coming, giving more fighters to choose from. In researching that game, I discovered RU-vid channels all about board games and started hearing about all these other amazing sounding games. So I bought one. Then another. Then another. You know the rest- flash forward a few years and board games are my all-consuming obsession, and we need to keep buying more Kallax shelves to store them all. So happy to find so many wonderful people share my passion for games, and I''m so glad you're a part of the community, too! Oh, and as far as Pringles, obviously it's Option A. What are we- animals?

Thanks for sharing your board game and channel origin story! It's interesting to hear how people discovered the hobby. Mine is pretty basic. I grew up playing games here and there, with family and friends, but didn't really fall in love with the hobby till about 2 years ago when I went to a local game store and was taught splendor and since then just couldn't get enough. Then I went down the board game rabbit hole, as I call it, and loved it! 😊 Kudos to you for just jumping in head first. Some board games can be pretty intimidating, especially starting out in the hobby. I've actually never played Lost Ruins of Arnak. I am definitely interested though! Anyhoo....this is getting way too long for a comment. Board game talk tends to do that to me! haha As far as the pringle debate goes....option B....100%!! I love this video. My wife and I discovered this hobby a few years ago when we took a trip to Niagara Falls and Toronto. When I was searching for things to do I saw someone mention and recommend a board game cafe. We decided we would have lunch there as a break from all the walking we were doing those days to see everything, but when we showed up we were truly amazed at how many different games were there. So we went and picked an easy game from their shelves, but even that still was overwhelming. Thankfully, some one came over and helped us with the game and truly made the experience special. After that we started diving into the hobby and have loved it ever since. Also, option A

Hi, Carly! I am from Austria and your channel was suggested to me today. Probably because I am very interested in board games. Like you, I am amazed that there are always only the same 10 games available in the "specialized" stores, when over 1,000 new board games are published every year and there are around 25,000 in the German-speaking world. But in the meantime I know where and how I can get good games. Since you've only recently entered the gaming scene, maybe you're ready for the next level: I have a lot of fun updating / improving my board games - e.g. replacing the cardboard coins with real coins. Especially the lost ruins of Arnak offer a lot of upgrades (see photo - 3D print of the ruin from a dealer at Etsy, handpainted and decorated by myself). I like your style and passion with which you approach things - good luck with your channel, which I'm subscribed to as of now. 👍😃🎲

Option A seems to fit better in my mouth, so I guess that's my answer. Having the audacity to learn a game, even if takes you days, is something special. I guess you were really smitten by the hobby at that point. I remember myself in the early days when many plays went over my head and it frustrated me because I want *their* fun to be my fun too! I was a bit embarrassed and jealous at how easy it was for others to get the concept and even the strategy of midweight and heavier games. Luckily I was able to play with multiple playgroups with varied tastes, and one day, those rules just keep on clicking because of familiar mechanisms.
@boardgame_buzzz

I feel like we have a lot of the same tastes in board games and similar background story in how we got into board gaming. It all starts with a friend that has hundreds of games haha. And Lost Ruins of Arnak must have been overwhelming. I remember for so long I relied on other people teaching me a game before I bought the game, but I’m finally buying games that I like and am better at figuring out how to play on my own. I also tend to play games that can play solo and with multiple people, it my current favorite is Dice Throne DTA and any Garphill game.

I love your spirit. I have a similar story. Growing up we played the typical smorgasbord of games, Monopoly, Clue, Risk, (my wife loves Clue and Risk), Payday, etc. So one day while looking for a birthday gift I seen Payday and remembered I really liked playing it. So I got it for the family, but when we played it I realized they had changed to a “modern” version and I didn’t like it. Someone had given us Catan but it had sat on a shelf for months, so I brought it out, dusted it off and set it up. It looked cool if nothing else. Then my wife and I played…we were both blown away. And like you, I started to wonder what else was out there. So down the rabbit hole I went. RU-vid, BGG, Amazon, my doorstep, became the routine. Longer story boring, my wife and I now host a weekly (or as much as possible) board game night, I have a couple hundred games, and I’m raising up a family of board gamers. We have friends that are even more addicted than me (if that’s possible). I’m the creative type so I have a few designs I’m working on as well. So, in other words, welcome to the family. Now, let’s help introduce the rest of the world to this amazing hobby. You have our support!

Hmmm, I think It would be hard to put my "board game history" into words in a concise comment, but since you asked, I'll try! We weren't a "board game family" but we did play them on occasion. (Things like monopoly and uno.) And when I was at someone's house or at a gathering and someone suggested board games I was the first to jump at the chance to play. In fact I have a memory of being at someone's house to watch the super bowl, though I wasn't too interested in watching football with the grownups, so they said I could go downstairs and peruse their collection. I remember seeing this towering closet FULL of boardgames and being in awe! Year after year when we went to watch the super bowl with them I went straight to that closet! You know, as I'm thinking about it, I think my love for board games came from playing them with my Grandma who we saw once or twice a week. We also played Uno, Scrabble, and a couple other random games with her, but her favorites were always Skip-bo and, as she became older, a game called "Sequence". She was so much fun to play with! Through my teen years, once a year at New Year's Eve my friends and I would play things like Scrabble, and when I moved closer to them back in 2017, we would play games together every so often. Well, fast forward to last year and I started going to monthly game nights, which are fun! And in the past couple months I've really been gaining even more of an interest in board games, and becoming more aware of the whole community around them! I found a friendly local game store and I really enjoy going there. In conclusion, I am super excited for what my future of board gaming will look like!
