Vlog 26 April 2023 | The CA4 #Border Zone is an important visa are that must be well understood when visiting Central America. A single #visa zone with a single clock ticking down on your time in the region that requires a hard border crossing to reset can be complicated. #borderrun #nicaragua #costarica #centralamerica

Do you still need an onward ticket if you drive from Nicaragua to Costa Rica for vacation? I meant to ask in the previous video. I'm asking because I would love to travel while vacationing in Nicaragua

You should not because you have your own car that you can use to return :)

You seem to qualify for a few residency categories, do you prefer visa runs?

Even if you qualify for residency, that doesn't make it fast or automatic. Depending on your situation and your home country residency can take quite some time. You always have to be a tourist before becoming a resident. Residency is a big secondary step. We've been in process for a long time. But it's only marginally desireable. The border run system is so easy, it's not really any concern. It's only twice a year and once a year we visit family in the EEUU so the actual border run for us is literally just once a year. And in our years here, never once have we needed to only do a border run and back. We've always combined it with a vacation or at least some of us traveling abroad. Because we are heavy travelers normally, we don't actually need border runs most years. Our normal travel processes take care of the visa renewals. So the residency is mostly for convenience is opening bank accounts and making our car eligible to drive over the borders. That's about it. Pretty minor stuff.

In El Salvador you get 180 days as a tourist.

On arrival? That's awesome. I was not aware. That's very handy. Sandly, it's still overlapping with Nicaragua so we can't go back and forth and stay all year that way. And it's land locked so either you fly in and get the 180, or you get the 90 from the land border from one of the other countries.

Do you mean you can extend your visa once you are there? The state department website states 90 days for a tourist visa. "For a U.S. citizen to enter El Salvador by air, land or sea, you must present a current U.S. passport and either a Salvadoran visa or a one-entry tourist card which can be valid for a maximum stay of 90 days".

@@jackbaldwin3649 that information is old. You get 180 days now. The president of El Salvador announced it this year in January. "The general tourism permits in El Salvador have just been extended from 90 to 180 days,” said Bukele, confirming that the tourism industry has flourished in the recently ended year of 2022 in El Salvador, thanks to the security measures and the attractiveness it has gained. the country for foreign investors and tourists.

@@jackbaldwin3649 State Department site is heavily fabricated for most countries I've been to. So that it is out of date for El Salvador would not be surprising. What he was saying is that recently Salvador just moved to straight up 180 days (if you arrive there, doesn't count if you cross the land borders as Salvador doesn't issue the visa in that case.) Since the CA4 grants 180 visas already, but in weird ways, it makes sense that they just go right to 180 days.

Re crossing CA4 borders by vehicle, each border of CA4 has fees collected and its a fire drill one office to another purposely confusing and no one to speak English. Only El Salvador does not charge. Guatemala (from Mexico), Honduras, and Nicaragua all have fees for dog, vehicle, and individuals.

oh yes, importing a vehicle between the places is nuts. That's a ton of work and absolutely no fun. I'd only do that in extreme circumstances. I don't think I've ever met someone who did that that didn't regret it.
