Often being compared to NATO, and similar to NATO’s own article 5, the CSTO has a parallel article 4 which establishes that aggression against one member would be perceived as an aggression against all.
The alliance conducts yearly military command exercises aimed at improving inter-organization cooperation, the largest of which was held in Southern Russia and central Asia in 2011, and consisted of more than 10,000 troops and 70 combat aircraft.
The alliance also has a Collective Rapid Reaction Force that was created in 2009, being intended to repulse military aggression, conduct anti-extremist operations and neutralise the impacts of natural disasters, and was deployed to Kazakhstan in 2021 to quell anti-government unrest in the state.
