Been loving the videos lately, havent been in a mood to watch much on youtube but i always enjoy the theories, explenations, lockemon. Its always a fun and interesting watch 👌👌
@@EinsamPibroch278 The anime is kind of weird, and they only showed real animals in the first season or 2, which was made before the wider Pokémon world really got established.
According to all known laws of Pokemon, there is no way that a Seel should be likable. Its design is too bland for it pop off the page and its name is too simple to be iconic. The Seel, of course, swims on anyways. Because Seels don't care what humans think is impossible.
So I can give a in depth explanation on what Seel is or a simple one here is the simple one “It’s a seal mixed with a unicorn” also it’s the Pokémon worlds version of a Narwal aka the underwater unicorn
seel reminds me of being at my my neighbours pool as a kid. i would jump in the water and pretend i was a seel and when my friends parent was like “aww like the animal” i said “no, the pokemon.” and swam away. i’ll bet she was confused.
"We can't have this Pokémon's name just be a word that already exists." Laughs in Gloom, Golem, Gastly, Haunter (literally just called Ghost in Japan), Electrode, Weezing, Ditto (There are plenty of other examples in Gen I, but these ones have little to no spelling alterations).
Not so fun fact:crows that you’ve successfully pissed off will teach there children to hate you too so once you’ve pissed of a single crow you got an entire bloodline comin after ya
A study done on an island inhabited by North America Corvids, show an indication crows can develop sort of "tribes" (I know a group of crows is a murder, but this gets the point across better) with different rudimentary cultures. The crows would make a simple tools to extract bug from where their beak couldn't reach. But the interesting part was that each of the "tribes" would make different versions for the same job unique to their territory.
Holy crap, that narwhal reference! Took me straight back to 10th grade. 🎶 Narwhals narwhals, swimming in the ocean, causing a commotion, because they are so AWESOME 🎶
My fun fact about seel/dewgong: like 10 years ago I did a "boring generic animal pokemon" run in some game (I want to say... X? Black 2 maybe?). The team was Dewgong, Stantler, Lumineon, Stoutland (even though he's good), and I literally can't remember the rest.
Just gotta say I’m really loving the new outtro music. Sometimes I like to have your stuff on in the background and the heavier stuff you used to play was just REALLY jarring
The dog face may be a reference to the fact that dogs and seals are caniforms.which also includes bears, foxes, and weasels. Dogs are in the canidae branch while seals, sea lions, and walruses in the pinnipedia branch
Watching this just remind me about how long Misty is able to hold her breathe. That is able to do a show underwater, dance, and only take a breathe of air once for however long the show are at the Cerulean City gym are. The Waterflower sisters are amazing in the show, wouldn't you say if take consider very few people could actually do that without training. What everyone else's thought.
Funnily enough, back in 4th grade I was OBSESSED with narwhals, and I searched through the Pokedex to find the closest thing to a narwhal possible. The one I landed on was Dewgong, and it's unironically why it's one of my favorites nowadays, even far past my narwhal obsession.
5:53-5:58: Narwhals, Narwhals swimming in the ocean causing a commotion, coz they are so awesome. Narwhals, Narwhals swimming in the ocean, pretty big and pretty white, they beat a polar bear in a fight, like an underwater unicorn, they got a kickass facial horn, they’re the Jedi of the sea, they stop cthulu eating ye, narwhals, they are narwhals, narwhals, just don’t let them touch your balls, narwhals, they are narwhals, narwhals, Inventors of the shish kebab.
@@ShadowEclipex Really? Because for my own fan-made Pokédex I had an Ice Normal type, arctic wolf named Barctic, who evolved into an Ice Steel type named Howlstorm.
I love seel! I had a level 100 Seel in my original blue version. I used the glitch to duplicate rare candies and boosted my seel to level 100 so it wouldn't evolve.
Hey lockstin have you ever thought about making a video explaining each pokemon typings weaknesses and strengths, like how water is strong against fire yet bad against grass(but the more interesting ones too like fairy and dragon)
I want to make a region form for seel and dewgong actually based on dewgongs and/or manatees, but take their laid back attitude to the next level. Turn them into lazily drifting clouds as pure flying types. Then give them the lightningrod ability or drizzle as a hidden ability. Both of them became too light to be able to be submerged in water so seel just bounces and sleeps on top of it like mist on a lake, while dewgong becomes a "real" cloud, rising up into to sky and just taking in the pleasant warm sun
in French Canada, games weren't consistent translated from English until after 2005. So the Pokémon show aired in French, but kept all the English names for consistency. Seel is how I learned what seals were named in English.
I want to explain all pokemon lines: explaining sunkern and sunflora video will be 1 minute, with all the branding stuff, without itll be just 5 seconds
Spout tail is cool I suppose. Looking at it again, the whole "its basically a combination of many types of arctic sea mammals" thing makes sense. They were my least favorite Kanto mons for just how dull they seemed to me. (Farfetch'd is much less usable but at least that's sort of memorably bad and some may argue was a joke Pokemon meant to not be good in the first place) People group them with Goldeen/Seaking which I dunno but I didn't dislike those two as much as I did Seel and Dewgong despite being arguably more boring in terms of design concepts. (Though maybe there's some surprising insight into those two as well) In terms of 'boring Water-types' they don't scream it as much as say Lumineon or Basculin from later gens. IMO I still much prefer the Spheal and Popplio lines in terms of Pokemon based on that subsection of animals. I think its because those laid upon a more specific animal with a twist rather than being a mishmash of similar animals.
something you could do to expand on pokemon like this is to bring up the prototype version. seel in particular was _pretty_ different, what with having a caveman-like head and a ... scythe tail? it only has a single curved flipper visible, but that might be because gen i's already dubious sense of perspective does _not_ pair well with fuzzy scans
I would have named Seel something like Seapup because it looks like a dog and it's a play on "sea lion" and "dog of the sea". -And Dewgong would simply not exist.-
I really like the simpler Pokémon like tailow and rattata and the like. The Pokémon world that can often start to feel a little meaningless when theres a new all powerful god at every corner. It’s nice to have just the average fauna of the Pokémon world to ground it out.
Lockstin: “The Canadians mist have got him.” Me: *spontaneously travels back in time and storms into the prime minister's office and says “We should save this beautiful animal!”
Video Idea! Is the pokerus virus a pokemon? Like, would it be possible to catch a single microscopic pokerus? 🤣 I know viruses are technically not alive but I imagine it would be something similar to an Ultra Beast 😬
A theory suggestion. What is Gardevoir? Like, think about it for a moment. We'd like to believe that is has human-like flesh... But if it's in the Amorpuhous Egg Group with things like Slugma, Muk, and Stunfisk... WHAT IS IT MADE OF? DOES IT HAVE ORGANS? DOES IT EVEN HAVE SKIN!?
Hated their names but always loved Dewgong. Seel looked clutzy so called it clutzeel. Then when it evolved into a sophisticated mythical beast, I called mine Elegentus (elegant gentle elephant seal walrus). The healer and caregiver of the sea. I thought it was mythical (like arcanine) AND bigger like orca size until I saw it in the anime. The sheer large white size of it made me hope that gamefreak would treat seel like slowpoke with an evolutionary item that would make it evolve into a white-ish narwhal/swordfish/marlin type.
In defense of rapidash, humans do that anyway. Unicorns exist. There are TWO mythological rabbits with horns. They have different kinds of horns but they still have HORNS.
I wasn't expecting a Narwhals song reference. I bet that's older than a good portion of your viewers. Next thing you'll be making a reference to that crab song
I really like the idea of making video’s about Pokémon name and design origins! Well done! 👌 even more so since you chose to make one about two of my favorite ones (though, I really can’t explain why 😅) Fun fact: both dewgong and seel have similar stupid names in French... seel = otaria (animal = otarie) and dewgong = lamantine ( animal = lamantin) ... Just change or add à letter to an already existant animal and bang! You have yourself a Pokémon! 🥳
Seel is great. According to the girl in the Pokemon Fan Club in Vermillion City, it squeals when you hug it. And it claps for you, even when you are the challenger in a gym battle. Not every Pokemon has to be a complex combination of creatures, sometimes simplicity is great itself.
The dewgong and seel line might also be a reference to the ugly duckling story (much like milotic and swanna) Seel is boring, ugly, and weird while Dewgong is Beautiful, graceful, and pleasant.
A few years ago I did an all Ice Type run of Ultra Sun and I used a Dewgong and I actually found this forgettable Pokémon as pretty great. One of my favorite underrated Pokémon now.
in Germany we call it Jurob = Junge Robe/ Young Seal, the Evolution we call Jugong = Jurob + Dugong. the second is not so good but the first. Seel can be ok because See we call a Lake, I know Seals dont life in Lakes, but not every name of the Pokemon are 100% accurate, but ai like the most german Names of the Pokemon. I think in the beginning of Pokemon they use always the English Names and translate it and have to put it right, when I know it right later they use the Original from japanese, but I dont know if they do it or not
I can never hate Seel. My parents got me a Seel plushie that was given out at KFC and I loved it. And unlike Zubat, which I also got a plush for, it wasn't a constant annoyance.
