What is the difference between a Geode and a Thunder Egg?

This video is about geodes and thunder eggs. I have pretty new to rockhounding and collecting rocks (9 months in). I myself just finished up taking lapidary course and can now start working on the actual rocks.
One of my first questions was do I have a thunder egg or a geode. I liked geodes and so thought a thunder egg would be a lot like them. I know it does depend on what part of the world you get them but thought to show some examples of geodes next to thunder eggs.
Thank you for watching and if you have any questions I will try my best to answer them.
My Etsy shop name changed recently from The Crystal Tree to NeaMaru Kawaii Gifts
www.etsy.com/shop/NeaMaruKawa...
My instagram name changed too but still have a lot of cool rocks to look at their and put up new rock images on a normal basis.

That egg with the light exterior that is from the location that is no longer being dug is a Buchanan thunderegg, from the Buchanan egg beds near Buchanan, OR. The one you showed after that is from Richardson’s Ranch. And that bubbly formation is called botryoidal (I, too, am a huge fan of bots!)

Thank you, and you have a great eye. I was told by the guy who kind of gave it to me that they no longer dug for that one. So was excited to add it to my collection.

Yes the are fun to get and to find with a bit of digging. Some may have a bit of crystal but I mostly see thunder eggs with a solid star pattern. This was the only one I have seen so far that had blue in it. I mostly see a little white. Some thunder eggs have moss inside them that is red/ orange I believe but their not as easy to dig up or find. At rocks shows someone is always opening them for people. Geodes are a bit easy to open if you have a solid thunder egg take it to your local rock club or put an ad out on craigslist if your in the US/if it's in your area for someone to cute them. There are also a lot of Facebook rock groups that can point you in the right direction. I still have like 8 I random ones I got these past two years that I will cut but the lapidary in my area is on limited hours. I didn't dig mine I got them at random rock shows. I have been on a thunderegg dig before and if they don't have the bed ready it's very hard digging. Some are duds too with nothing inside of them. Some beds the thunder eggs are very brittle and will fall apart. ( they been sitting in water too long and that starts to break them up a bit) Hope you find something interesting.

I know the one that look like ocean was a surprise to me. The Oregon coast actually looks like that. I got it at a rock show they had bunch of them on a table and so I just bought a few. It was my very first thunder egg too. I tried a coconut geo...make sure they are light. I got a heavy one and it was solid and read all the way through. $27 and now it sits in pieces in my yard as jus a normal rock. I have like 6 more small thunder eggs that I need to open up but the machine I go to use always falling apart. It's a $1.50 an hour to use. So maybe the next time I am in I might be able to open them. Which would be next week. They been shut down due to covid for over a year. I love looking for rocks.

Thank you I looked the information up but also talked to older rock collectors. I have found that you can and it's more rare find a bit of druzy inside a thunder egg but most just have the star pattern in them. They are pretty big here in Oregon and every rock show I have went to their all have a star pattern and not much really going on inside. Their is red plume which people really like and that is where red moss gets stuck inside of the thunderegg when it was formed. Just have fun and keep finding cool rocks.

Yes they would. Why I got a kit from my family for Christmas. I also got to go to a ranch where I could just pick them up off the ground and went to my local rock hounding shop in town and they cut them in half for me for like $2.00. So if you ever pick up one up that are hard to break open look up local places in town or a town near by they may have a rock club that can cut it for you with a one of their saws. Rock shows usually have one place where they just break them open for you too.

They did not forget to mention geodes can be solid because no geode is solid. That is actually what's called a nodule.
