People claim "All Bibles are the same," but this simply isn't true. For example, there are many substantial differences between the King James Version and the New Living Translation of the Bible. The NLT isn't just a modernizing of the ancient text. Here are the simple facts about the differences between the NLT and the KJB.

Thank you for this breakdown, when doing some comparisons myself of the different versions, to me the meaning of some verses change completely. I couldn’t understand KJV when I was younger but I am now able to grasp it much better in my older age and seems to be most accurate

@PastorScottIngram also Pastor just by Copyright Laws each VERSION must be AT LEAST 10% different from the original. I don't trust any of them other than the KJV1611 with the Concordance and the Lexicon. I use ESword Bible Software. It is completely free, and I can compare all versions to the original manuscripts which are there in images to see for ourselves. All with complete numbered references to EACH WORD and their true meaning. I recommend it

There is no such thing as a word for word translation, Many Greek words cannot be translated directly to English. Ekklesia=assembly, group, gathering, It could mean church or a party at your house.
@PastorScottIngram
@PastorScottIngram 2 года назад
While there are variations of words that can be used for a single Greek or Hebrew word, the term word for word and thought for thought is actually not about that ideal at all. It is an accepted way of distinguishing one translation from another translation's translation philosophy. in a thought for thought translation, they don't rely on a single word to get the point across but on what it perceived as the general idea of a passage. This is an important clarification for those who study God's Word.

I understand. My point here is about the basis of these translations. The NLT is loose with wording and uses a Greek text that cuts away the equivalent of 1 and 2 Peter from the New Testament from the Greek. I would suggest you check out the NKJV which uses the same Traditional text using modern readings. Even though it isn't as exact, it can help you. The KJV is in what would be considered modern English. It was originally translated in 1611, but was updated until 1769. That is the version you will usually see. Hi, Steph. Just grab an NLT and don't look back. It's overwhelmingly regarded as a faithful translation by conservative scholars. The original God breathed scriptures were written in the common, easy to understand languages of the day, and did not have a haughty religious feel to them. Don't be afraid to read a translation that ALSO reads like common, easy to understand words.

NLT was the first Bible I read cover to cover. It’s a decent translation but I do believe it tends to soften sin and sometimes it does the interpreting for you. One area NLT does a great thing is the way it puts measurements into things like yards or feet rather than say cubits. Or the way they write out numeric words such as 144,000 NLT vs KJV - an hundred forty and four thousand ~ Revelation‬ ‭14‬:‭1‬ Those kind of things help clarify a lot and/or make things easier to understand.
@PastorScottIngram
@PastorScottIngram 3 месяца назад
I think that is a very fair evaluation. The only thing that I would add which is really important is that the NLT uses a translation base which removes many verses. This is why I prefer the KJV or NKJV because they have the entirety of the traditional text.

The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.” ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭21‬:‭16‬ ‭KJV‬‬ “When he measured it, he found it was a square, as wide as it was long. NLT might be a curious curiosity with clarification like don't provoke your children to wrath "by how you treat them". However, there's important things that seem to be KJV exclusive or modern Bibles might contain still but fall short on. If one were to study what the missing verses are, it makes one curious about the plausible agenda of the modern bibles.

Re 14:20 From the 1599 Geneva bible. 14:20 And the winepress was trodden without the city, {15} and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand [and] six hundred furlongs. Note in the margin, (15) That is, overflowed very deep, and very far and wide: the speech is exaggeration to signify the greatness of the slaughter. These are those pleasant fruits truly, of the contempt of Christ, and desiring of Antichrist rather than him, which the miserable, mad and blind world reaps at this time. Re 14:20 From the 1611 King James bible. 20 And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs. Rev 14:20 (KJV) The true meaning of the verse, a horse is the symbol of a nation or race in stride (move out). Such as the four horses in the seven seals, Rev.6:1-8. The bridle is what rules or guides the horse and no natural horse uses more than one bridle, and the bridle is around the head of the horse. What the Spirit is saying in the word used in the bible is that the nation the horse represents is about to fall and blood will run from the lowest level (smallest courts) clear up and into the highest courts of the people, in other words all law enforcement, and military, are found guilty of misusing the laws. By how the nation uses or obeys the laws is how the nation is judged. King James was no saint, but God uses both good and bad to bring about his purpose. King James had an aversion to the notes in the margin of the Geneva bible as did God, so God used King James’ aversion to bring about his (God’s) preserved word of truth in the English language, God did this because he knew that he would bring about this powerful nation [U.S.A. and the English language] of ours to lead the world. All glory to God. Amen

And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

"Peradventure" one day we will be blessed with a 'thought for thought' equivalent to KJB "wherewith" we can read within our "three score and ten years" of our life? Don't confuse "thee" that we only have issues with "thy" choice. I am sold on KJV but I feel that our constant holding to archaic language has prevented any translation aimed at pleasing the KJO people being made. I prefer the Simplified or the KJV21 as I actually can read more than a sentence without laughing or grabbing a dictionary, but I would love an NLT that includes every meaning found in the text that the KJV was made from.

One big difference between the KJV and the NLT and most other modern versions is the doctrine of salvation, which IMO is a pretty important doctrine. I would note at Gal 2:16 the KJ teaches we are justified by the Faith of Christ while most modern versions say through faith in Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ showed tremendous faith that God would raise Him from the dead. Then at Rom 3:30 the KJ teaches that the one God will justify the Jew by faith and the Gentile through faith while the NLT at Rom 3:30 simply says everyone is saved by getting right with God. (Kind of weak don't you think?) Now to our foundational verse concerning salvation in this Age of Grace: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Eph.2.8 KJV I would direct the attention of the good reader to the second phrase in the above "and that not of yourselves" the "that" can only refer to the preceding faith. We are saved by the Grace of God through the Faith of Christ, NOT our own personal faith in Christ! There are two faiths at work now after the cross, man's personal faith as demonstrated in the OT where they had to show their faith by their works and the Faith of Christ which is gifted to every believer! One cannot find this doctrine of salvation in the modern versions with a magnifying glass. The Faith of Christ is the faith that came after the law. Gal 3:23 The one and only way to the Throne of God is through the Lord Jesus Christ made possible by the shed blood of God which was coursing through the body of Christ. Oh yes the blood! At 1Cor 15:3 the KJ teaches the gospel including HOW He died. How did Christ die for you and I? He bleed to death shedding His precious blood for one and all. The NLT as with other modern versions make no mention of HOW He died. Salvation today is totally made possible by the Faith of Christ. This is the Faith gifted to every believer which gives us the same knowledge Christ had: the moment I die, God will raise me from the dead. If you don't know in your heart that God will raise you instantly from the dead also, perhaps you might examine your belief system.

@@PastorScottIngram I'm at a bit of a loss here trying to figure out why folks are taken back by the thought the faith in Eph 2:8 might very well be the devine faith of Christ. One of the main themes of Paul's writings is that we are placed IN Christ, no one seems to question this. When we stand before God, does God see all our sins? No, God sees us through Christ. When we believe that Jesus is the Son of God and believe in how He died, was buried, and rose again, we have demonstrated our limited human faith that through the Lord Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life; we are placed in Christ. Why are folks so taken back by the thought that it's also through the Devine faith of Christ that we find full and complete salvation? Seems folks always want to hold something back they can claim as their own. I truly hope salvation is not dependent on my personal faith because when my personal faith is put up against the personal faith of Abraham, it would fall way short. When Paul quoted Habakkuk 2:4 at Rom 1:17, Paul left off one little thing. In Hab it's says "his" faith, but Paul only says faith. Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: Rom.3.22 KJV

Where the thing is about the new modern Bibles in the NLT Bible is that scripture wasn't removed it was the manuscript that they found that did not have those verses in scriptures and yes that the King James Bible added scripture to it, the NIV, NLT, ESV bibles are off all the same manuscript with the so-called missing versus but they're not missing there are in the footnotes as I said that the manuscript that they found for the new modern Bibles don't have those because that's what the manuscript is in the documents, but on the other hand with the King James version Bible we do not talk that way today we do not talk with the words of ye, thy, thee, those words are over 400 years ago and I don't believe that the King James version Bible is the only accurate English Bible that we should read I was reborn and saved on the NIV Bible and I still read it 15 years later and I also read the New living translation Bible and sometimes I would read the King James, but I know a lot of pastors and I know a lot of Christians that won't even touch the King James Bible because we don't talk that way anymore over 400 years ago and that's why we have these new modern Bible such as the NIV the NLT and ESV and other translations of the Bible too. Just to make it clear that nobody took any Bible verses out of any translation of the Bible it was just the manuscript that they fought for the new modern Bibles.

Thanks for your comment! As you can see, I also have read thru several translations myself including the NLT and the others you mentioned. Have you read the NKJV? The NKJV doesn't remove those verses and passages just as the KJV doesn't remove them either. Their removal is an issue for me because I believe the Bible is the authority and I do not agree with some scholars idea that these verses should be removed or have doubt cast upon them. The modern day NKJV translators did not feel that they needed to have doubt cast upon them in their translation either. They do show the differences in these two different views of manuscript evidence though within their footnotes. It does make some things simpler, but in doing so, it makes it not as accurate in places as I have shown here. It also uses the Critical Text which eliminates so much of scripture that I cannot look at the NLT as anything more than something similar to a Children's Storybook Bible instead of the authoritative Word of God.

The KJV is the PERFECT word of God!
@scotttovey

"The KJV is the PERFECT word of God!" That's an ignorant point of view. 1) English is not the original language. The original languages of Hebrew for the Old Testament and Greek for the New Testament are in fact; "the perfect word of God". The English translation cannot be perfect because the English words that are used to give us the English translation; do not always include all the same ideas that their original Hebrew and Greek counterparts do. It would be more accurate to say the KJV is the best English translation available. However, it is inaccurate to say it is the perfect translation. The differences between the original languages and the English language; prevents any English translation from being "the perfect word of God".

I just bought the life application Bible in the NLT and I like it. It words things different and that’s what I like about it. I know the meanings of words like lowring in the KJV but instead of having a Bible that says lowring and I have to think “threatening”, what’s wrong with a Bible that says threatening? When I study a word I don’t go check the KJV or the NKJV, I go to the original languages. I have books, tools to see exactly what God said. I don’t mean to be rude because you’re a brother in the Lord but you sound like one of these king James only guys. Instead of preaching the gospel to the lost you’re worried about what translation they are reading. Funny thing about books is they are written on paper and you know what you can do with paper? Write on it. Because I have a new translation doesn’t mean I’m scrapping all my other Bibles. It’s a tool. My concordance is a tool. My interlinear is a tool. My lexicons are tools. Gods Word is a sword and it cuts. I use it in battle regularly. God is still watching over His word to perform it and it’s still not going to come back to Him without accomplishing what He wants and I bet He honors His Word regardless if you saith it in kingeth jameseth lingo or modern English. You should teach on something worth teaching on like proving to these idiots who claim Jesus died on a Wednesday instead of a Friday because they understand Jesus saying He was going to be three days and nights in the heart of the earth like Jonah was three days and nights in the belly of the fish, against so much evidence He died on a Friday. Teach what matters and don’t split hairs

The reliability of the Bible is a worthy topic and making clear if a translation is exact to the original is very important because the Bible is the authority on what God hath said. @@PastorScottIngram I agree. I think only the original scriptures are what we believe are inerrant. Not any translation. Because words change over time I personally have no problem with a translation that uses more modern language. The jehovah witnesses add an “a” in John 1:1 making their version say what they believe instead of lining up with Gods Word. Mormons use the KJV but don’t believe it and don’t understand it. I’m looking thru my NLT and I’m so used to certain verses saying things a certain way anything slightly different sounds strange. But like genesis 1:1. TLT uses empty whereas I think the KJV and NKJV use void. Both mean the same thing but it’s going back to the original Hebrew that word might take on a much bigger meaning. When I study I try to find every instance a word is used and check those verses to get a big picture of its definition. Holy is one of them. It’s almost synonymous with sanctify and consecrate and “come out from among them and be separate” seems to be the definition of all 3. God is Holy but even when the tabernacle was in the midst of the people He was still separate from them. Lots of books are keyed to Strong’s and Strong’s is done up using the king James. No matter what version anyone uses if they are going to research any word they are going to have to go to the original languages and an outdated version like the king James is going to be the first step in going back to a lot of information
