To be fair if I was a champions league club scout, this would be perfect for seeing how players from smaller and obscure nations could stack up against different European opposition
@@marcusmclean3842 ofc not. but city has the ability to spend 150 mil a season. the likes of porto, benfica, atalanta, lyon, ajax, shahktar, etc dont. you took the exception to the rule g. if every club had their finances, theyd be looking at the best of the best
In Portugal, Santa Clara are going to be in their first ever European travel because of this competition.A very small club from the Azores having european money will make them very happy. And Paços de Ferreira will be in their second European travel in 10 years, because of the Comference League. This is one of the best ideas I have ever seen UEFA do.
Same. So many comments in here hating on this idea just because it will not be high quality or all that bullshit, but in the bigger picture it's gonna help so many clubs especially from the lower leagues.
@@Michael-fi7vu yes, but instead of just being another team that loses in the qualifiers, this year they have competition that they can beat and than compete in the group stages.
@@sonofrivadin3684 yes, but it's an easier qualifier than in the Europa League. Rio Ave early this season lost the las qualifier vs AC Milan on pens. So if was this year, they would of had a better chance to compete in European group stage
If a club sees themselves as too big for the conference league, then just have your under 23s filling most of the squad. It’d be great European experience for them
But UEFA might have a problem with that - they may tell teams, who do this practice of load management, to either take this competition seriously, or don't show up at all and give the berth to someone who will care (like in England - West Ham, Everton or Leeds)
@@ivaneurope yeah that’s a fair point, I’m sure it wouldn’t be an entire team full of under 23s. Probably a heavy mixture thatd be good enough to win most of the group games at least
It's definitely a cash grab, but it will benefit smaller clubs so much. Especially teams from eastern and central Europe will have a good opportunity to show themselves. Plus the diversity in the competition would make it very unpredictable.
Not if teams like Liverpool could still come in. And those matches would not be matches to look forward to for small teams because the big teams would just play with their youth teams
@@georgelieer7691 Brighton play a very good brand of football they always create chances in Xg but they don't have quality players to convert the chances into goals.
As an arsenal fan I thought when we dropped down from cl to europa we would win it 😂 now I feel like if we get uecl we will just lose to Villarreal in the final
Impossible. The champions of these smaller leagues qualify for Champions League play-offs so they will have send their 3rd/4th placed teams to this Conference League which makes it almost impossible for them to win, specially considering the 7th placed teams from the bigger leagues will be total favorites to win this competition.
@@jonsoler3648 impossible my ass, underdogs defeat favorites in cup games all the time. The champions of conference can defeat teams like salzburg, dinamo zagreb, genk, red star, lokomotiv moscow, etc. Its important to dream of that chance and money rewards. They would still be european winners, the best of the worse and deserve a chance to play in the cl. A place directly in the groupe stages pot 4 would still be to much, but a play off chance is more resonable.
@@ironcross5771 You missed my point. It's impossible because of the UEFA rules for these smaller leagues in which the champions are the ones that qualify for UCL play-offs. So the Europa League spot sounds more reasonable, you can't go from the worse European competition straight to the Top one, you have to go through the middle of the pack first.
@@jonsoler3648 what do you think about the idea of returning cup winners cup competition, as the 4th european turnament where all main cup winners will enter the competition. it would be a paralel competition meaning that you can play in both cl/el and cwc. However because there is no space in the calender all cup winners will not play in the domestic cup next season. Bassically a competition replaces another. Cup winners will no longer enter europa league, those will enter as 5th/6th etc will be direct k0 starting from last 32(not seeded would be more exciting), before that qualifiers. winners of this cup will get into champions league directly, be involved in the supercup and participate again next season as title holders. So each country has 1 entry, and roster changes every year, except winners( where the country will have 2 entry, they and the next cup winner). Bassically you can have neither barca or real playing the copa del rey because both play in cwc, one as title holder and one as the previous copa del rey winner. The quality of the turnament will be between cl/el and have certain charisma because all participants are actually winners. Has prestige because in order to win it you need to win another competition. It will also boost the domestic cups. In theory you can have Barcelona, Chelsea, Bayern, Psg, Porto, Juventus, Ajax, real madrid (title holder) in the quarters wich is a champions league mirror. This means more european battles between giants wich many want, and more money, though not with superleague idea
This is great news for me since I can finally see my home country*s teams (Estonia) have a chance at Europe finally we can do something in Europe other than fail in the Europa League qualifiers👍
huge football fan like myself would definitely love to see smaller clubs thrive and shine in the European competition stage! Is also great opportunity to gain competitive experience for younger players like under 23
As a Shamrock Rovers fan I welcome this. A League of Ireland team has qualified for the Europa League 3 times in the last 10 years, Shamrock Rovers in 2011/2012, and Dundalk twice in 2016/2017 and 2020/2021. Each time was a huge deal for Irish football. Now Shamrock Rovers, who went undefeated to win the LOI in 2020, will have 2 safety nets rather than 1 to get into the group stages. Win two ties in Europe and we're in at least the UECL groups. Being in a separate champions path will help (like Dundalk last year who drew Inter Escaldes, Sheriff Tiraspol and Klaksvíkar Íttrótorfelag to get to the groups of the Europa). Dundalk, who finished 3rd in the LOI last year, could also have something to say this year. They have brought in lots of decent players from abroad and look like they might be beginning to click. Same with Sligo Rovers who scraped 4th spot last year. They are in good form at the moment and 2nd in the league. I don't hold much hope for Bohemians (2nd last year in LOI) or Longford Town (4th in second tier and promoted through the play offs. I have no idea why they're in it this year). Bohemians have no consistency at all this year and Longford are second last at the time of writing. Many LOI clubs budget for runs in Europe but can lead to their demise (look at Waterford and Cork City in recent years). Hopefully this will give other clubs in similar leagues around Europe a chance in a continental competition
Seems good, since the level of Europe League will go up,and at the same time the new tournament provides more opportunities for smaller teams. It will be interesting to see how some big teams who end up there will approach it.
I’m looking forward to this new tournament, getting bored of watching the same teams from Spain and England dominate the current tournaments. Hopefully see some success for ‘smaller teams’.
@@rohithraman6488 of course it's a good one: it puts more money into UEFA's pockets. You ever saw a money-hungry corporation purposely hurting their own pockets?
@medic gaming they would earn more money if they played in UCL, not in garbage competitions that UEFA invents every year to keep the small clubs away from the table of the rich mobsters like Perez Anielli and Ambramovic. So gtfo with your mind tricks!
@@memeboitimo Unfortunately the chances are just double those of the Europa League. And with the reduction of qualifying rounds, Arsenal would probably have around the same chances of meeting that 'random team' as before...
I’m actually really excited to see these type of games although there were some fair points made on why it could just become troublesome for some teams. Tough situation
I'd imagine the bigger clubs from the top European leagues won't be very interested in the competition, but it could prove useful to them nonetheless. For those teams it could be useful for keeping backup players match fit, and could be a fantastic opportunity for youth players. Could give them sporadic experience at senior level, which would not only help development, but also show their clubs if they are ready for regular senior football, whether that's on loan or in their first team. For teams that don't spend a lot on players, this could give them better youth development and alter their transfer policies if certain young players impress.
I like the general idea of granting lower ranked teams exposure and a taste of European football via the UECL, but I wonder if there will be more discussion about increasing the number of subs allowed in domestic and European competitions. The EPL decided not to increase the sub limit despite having a more compressed season this year. I think a sizable number of injuries that have happened can be attributed to the increased number of games and players’ bodies not having enough time to recover between matches.
There should a new format for UEFA Super Cup as this new tier is created. Semi-final: UEFA Europa League winner vs UEFA Conference League winner Final: UEFA Champions League winner vs The winner of the semi-final match between UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League
As an arsenal fan im really embarrassed going into this kind of competition but its good for teams that are not as good as the big clubs to compete for a trophy like west ham everton etc
“Teams that are not as good as the big clubs to compete for a trophy” , as an arsenal fan , you fit into that category, yee are absolutely shit and yee are all so delusional 😂😂😂😂
As a fan of a small team (not from the top 15 countries), I am very grateful for that. While my club has reached the UCL GS twice, most European seasons end too soon and it’s just annoying. In this competition we can reach even the quarter final in a good season. I know bigger clubs aren’t fans of this competition, but they completely forget about us smaller clubs.
1:40 " one hundred and seventy six teams" 2:10 5 for the big five: 5 + 2 for 6-15: 10 3 for 16-50: 35*3= 105 2 for the bottom five: 10 + 1 for Liechestein: TOTAL: 136. 136
Well done video. Pretty much spot-on. Only one mistake in there that I will point out, especially after Villarreal indeed finished seventh and won the EL. Since Villarreal won the EL and finished in the ECL spot, no Spanish team replaces them in the ECL. Thus, Celta de Vigo will not replace the Yellow Submarines. However, it is worth noting that since UEFA are looking at banning Real Madrid and/or Barcelona, it is possible that Spain end up with an ECL spot. This would then go to Celta de Vigo or Granada, depending on how many clubs get banned. This scenario would mean that Spain would get one less EL spot. Only time will tell, but assuming there's no ban, Spain, as things stand, would not have a spot in the inaugural ECL GS
I think this is a good thing. It will be a great way to scout new talent and a way for smaller teams to face other teams across Europe and potentially add extra revenue but it could also impact certain teams across currently in Europa League from countries like Greece, Sweden, Norway, Denmark etc.
This is a great tournament for the smaller nations. I’m Maltese and this is something that will benefit football here immensely. Yeah it might not fill up the emirates or white hart lane but it 100% will fill up the stadiums here in these smaller nations. This will make the league more attractive as you have a better chance of making it in Europe meaning that leagues such as the Maltese league can attract better players and more investors giving us the chance to have a stronger league and hopefully a stronger national team. Us minnow league love these kind of tournament even the nations league. The nations league was a fantastic idea and helped my country get better overall. We already managed a strong performance away to Slovakia nearly beating them. Competitions like this may not benefit the big nations but they will definetly benefit us.
Actually a brilliant competition for European football since small clubs just can't compete in the UCL with the elites now.The Gap is just way way big and underdog stories are almost extinct now. Plus this really elevates the status of the Europa league when imo this season UEL>UCL(personal opinion). A good step for UEL and for better representation Of European clubs.
Here's mad idea - what if UEFA came up with a competition that would allow any club from any top division to participate? I don't think absolutely all clubs would go ahead, cost-benefit would filter out large number of clubs, but all clubs who feel are "European" would get a chance to play.
I guess the intent is good: to give a better chance of participating (and eventually even winning) a European football competition for countries/football clubs that normally wouldn't even get a chance of getting into the Europa League Group stage. At the same time it's also giving more countries/football clubs a better chance of staying in a European competition for as long as possible, which you'd think would help drive up the interest in the competition...
Hopefully the Welsh teams do well, Bala town (I'm friends with a player of them) played in the Europa League last season and gave a good fight hopefully they can do better in the Conference League
After Villarreal won the UCL, which qualified them for the UCL as Spain`s 5th team, no Spain team will Play in the UWCL at least not in the qualifying and group stage.
this Conference League tournament is probably great for top football clubs in countries like Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Romania, Switzerland and Belgium to win. Dutch teams like Ajax and PSV and Belgian teams like Anderlecht or Brugge are guaranteed to win this UECL competition but top clubs in Eastern Europe could do the same of they have interest in for this new 3rd competition. but the money should also be good in order to make this interesting. Russian or Ukrainian clubs like Dynamo, CSKA, Lokomotiv, Zenit, Shaktar for example could win UECL. I believe Zenit won Europa League a few years ago.
As an American, WHY NOT JUST MARCH MADNESS THIS THING! It would be awesome, seed the teams based on how strong they seem, and throw them in a gigantic bracket
Can imagine the clubs from the top 5 leagues that qualified for the Conference League will just send their U23 teams, especially in the earlier stages of the tournament. If they progress into the tournament, it's a good experience for the younger players. If they don't, they probably couldn't care less and just carry on.
Essentially imagine Linfield who start in the UCL 1st qualifying round. Should they pass just that one round they are already giving themselves a huge chance for UECL. Should they reach the 3rd qualifying round they have already confirmed a spot in the groups of the UECL, because if they lose they are transferring to the Europa League playoffs which if they lose will put them in the Conference League groups. Very exciting for smaller nations honestly.
Sounds like a good time for big teams under 23s to get some gametime. And bench players stay happier having more games. Might mean less movement if you have a strong bench
> UEFA: pratically retires smaller leagues champions of the UCL group stage > UEFA too: creates a low tier competition to put them and call it "mOrE iNcLuSiVe"
Not too sure how I feel about this. I think they should keep the different European competitions seperate from each other. Clubs that drop out of the Champions League should not still be able to play in the Europa League, and so forth, unless they are at the stage just past the group stage. It makes it harder for smaller clubs

I checked which TV networks around the world will be broadcasting this new competition and there are some big countries that don't yet have a TV deal for the Europa Conference League including China, India, Japan and every country in Latin American besides Brazil. And in the US it will be streaming on Paramount+, AKA, America's seventh most popular streaming service.
Good for the small teams competing but what about watching it? I only start watching Europa league on the last 8 and I still find some boring games like (Molde vs Granada) but with this new league I don't know, I don't see anyone watching not even the final I can already imagine the semis with (St Etienne vs Braga) and (Rubin Kazan vs Real Betis) good for the clubs competing and their fans but Europa League barely gets any attention before the last 8 now imagine Conference league not to mention how embarrassing its going to be for a big team to fall on this competition and still not win it...
I mean if you are a fan, then you watch your team play whatsover of which league they are in. Now ofcourse there are priorities. But other than that, I don't understand this comment.
@@DrDiabolical000 This league is too low imagine if a big team drops there which will happen eventually they will just play the under23 or the B team they wont take the competition serious and it will just ruin the show, I doubt this league will survive
Speaking of broadcasting - you may think that (at least from the lower ranked nations perspective) this tournament will be on free-to-air television, right? Wrong, because most of those networks are pay-TV - like NENT in the Northern Europe and the Baltics or Arena Sport in former Yugoslavia.
Although financially it would lose a lot of steam, I would prefer if the top 2 leagues (England, Spain) didn't send teams to the Conference league. Obviously won't happen because viewership would plummet, but the idea of giving teams from lower leagues like Denmark, Austria, Hungary, etc. an actual shot at winning a major European tournament sounds really exciting. Also allows big clubs to see how obscure players from lower leagues fair in big stages. I am totally in favor of the Conference league. Even if it may make rich clubs richer indirectly, the additional revenue to small clubs will be an immense benefit.
I think it’s an awesome idea, hopefully it should help improve standards at lower levels. Which will attract attention from bigger clubs to buy there players for good money. if they are good enough and show metal in pressure cooker situations which European football does provide. Just need fifa to make a World Cup lower ranked nations such as San Marino and Andorra who will never experience tournament football in turn never improve.

The best way to go about it would have been keep everyhting the same for UCL and UEL and just add a third division. With the two finalists getting a spot in the next years UEL.
I really really like the idea of accommodating smaller teams but it feels like they’re trying to define A tier , B tier & C tier European competition rather than anyone can get in, all in the name of profit
Cup winners cup wouldnt be as good today.Because back then only 1 team from country was in CL and 2-3 in UEFA cup so big teams were in CWC.Now all good teams would qualify for CL and EL so CWC would suck

I see this competition for clubs in top leagues as a way to play their youngsters and rotation squad in a oficial competition. So they can win some kind of experience.
Adding more teams always reduces the quality of the competitions, as the top performing clubs are already involved. This is the problem with the planned changes to the Champions League. ... The new Conference will just have also-rans involved, and while a 'European Competition' by name, the teams involved have to engage, and I suspect it might turn out like the Carabao Cup, with top teams not interested in the distraction and additional fixtures, and only really getting involved if they scrap past the minnows of Europe. ... Time will tell I guess.
