What Is the Future for St. Louis's Southside Neighborhoods?

For this video we check out the Boulevard Heights neighborhood, along with the Carondelet and Patch neighborhoods. St. Louis's southside looks much nicer than the northside, but crime has been picking up on the southside of town, which historically has always been the nicer side of town. Some southside neighborhoods could still be considered as safe, however much of the southside has gained a bad reputation.

Carondelet: 20:54 - 28:36

*When I first moved to StL (for work), I lived on the south side - right by the Pelican Bldg. It was gorgeous, safe, and I stayed for many years. Then they started to let it go again. And I let - and I will NEVER come back. StL is turning into what I left: NYC. Corruption, graft, crime out in the open - the entire city is worthless now. I don't spend money in the city any more either. I USED to be a season ticket holder for the orchestra - not any more, we are way out in the County now, getting ready to move to N. Carolina or Montana. ANYWHERE but here.*

Parents & stepsister live in Holly Hills. You cannot hear gunshots “all the time”. That’s nonsense. “All the time” is meaningless if it’s hyperbole than means anything from “a few times a month” to three or four times in a week, and then not again for three months. That’s not “all the time”. I’ve lived in Shaw in the 80s, the state streets, and have family on the west side in Hamilton heights, and the Ville, and I know what “all the time” is really like.

St. Louis when I was a boy had 850 thousand people. The city itself now has 330,000 people. A lot of these picturesque neighborhoods attract 'urban pioneers' who have the last few years ended up fleeing as crime spreads to even 'gentrified' neighborhoods in the form of theft, carjackings etc.

Iam not quite as negative about the south side as some are. For one thing, the crime rate is high because there is a relatively high population density compared to the north side. Also there are gentrified neighborhoods on the south side. I don't see it deteriorating to the same degree as the north, although there are parts that look pretty seedy.

Grew up in the south city in the 50s and throughout 2004. Over the years I owned property in Compton Heights, Carondelet and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods. They all went to hell with the North/South migration. Old people died and their kids selling, that turned houses to rentals that brought a lot of crime. After being mugged in front of my house I sold for twice what I paid and moved to the country. Today that house was bought for half what I sold it for. Under the current management the town is dying. So much for multiculturalism.

St. Louis is underrated. The architecture will never be duplicated. I believe the car has destroyed a lot of major cities vs commuting by public transportation would keep the cities in good shape. There is a movement for people to be able to walk to everything and that Realestate tends to appreciate.

St. Louis, like any other city, faces multiple factors that contribute to its crime rate. While it is difficult to pinpoint a single cause, several factors often associated with higher crime rates in St. Louis include: Poverty and Socioeconomic Disparities: High levels of poverty, income inequality, and socioeconomic disparities can contribute to an increased likelihood of crime. Poverty-stricken areas may experience higher rates of unemployment, limited access to quality education, and inadequate social support systems, all of which can foster an environment conducive to criminal activity. Gang Activity and Drug Trade: The presence of gangs and drug trade can contribute significantly to crime rates. St. Louis has struggled with gang-related violence, particularly in certain neighborhoods. The illegal drug trade often fuels conflicts between rival gangs and contributes to violence and other criminal activities. Urban Decay and Neighborhood Disinvestment: Areas experiencing urban decay, characterized by abandoned buildings, lack of economic opportunities, and limited resources, can become breeding grounds for criminal activities. Neglected neighborhoods often face challenges related to unemployment, inadequate housing, and limited access to essential services. High Rates of Gun Violence: St. Louis has consistently had high rates of gun-related violence, which contributes to the overall crime rate. Easy access to firearms, illegal firearms trafficking, and disputes settled through gun violence can exacerbate the crime problem. Historic Racial Segregation and Divisions: St. Louis, like many American cities, has a history of racial segregation and divisions. Residential segregation can perpetuate socioeconomic disparities, limit opportunities, and lead to concentrated poverty and crime in certain areas. Inadequate Social Programs and Rehabilitation: Limited access to effective social programs, including education, job training, mental health services, and substance abuse rehabilitation, can hinder efforts to address root causes of crime and help individuals reintegrate into society. Limited Community Policing and Trust: Trust and positive relationships between law enforcement agencies and communities are vital in reducing crime. Lack of trust and strained relationships can impede effective crime prevention and hinder community cooperation with law enforcement efforts. It's important to note that addressing crime rates requires a multi-faceted approach that goes beyond addressing individual causes. It involves comprehensive strategies focusing on community engagement, poverty alleviation, educational opportunities, violence prevention, and criminal justice reform.

I think the major factor to all of this the fact that the city of St.Louis wanted to succeed from St.Louis County in 1877 and thus becoming an independent city.

When you have a mayor like we have, nothing will get better. She directs all the money to North St. Louis because that's the gutter she lives in. So, they're running all their vagrant thugs to the decent areas of the city. The police won't show up anymore if your car is stolen. You just phone it in and if they find it you're lucky because they don't bother looking for it. Our truck was stolen right out of the driveway and used in a drive-by. The cop tried to say that wedid the drive-by because he had no idea our truck was stolen. Just read last night that the city is going to begin putting cops on 11 hour shifts due to a shortage of cops. It's sickening here. We need a Rudi Guiliani running this city. Somebody who will kick ass and take names. I'm next out of this hell hole. This is not the place we had when I was growing up, I could go on and on, but I'll spare you.

For years I've watched friends work on their brick houses and longed for one of my own. You can tell, from the decent cars on the street and the well-kept commercial areas that this area was hot ten years ago. But you can tell now by looking at the real estate listings that people are fleeing. This is one of the few markets in the country with tons of nice, well maintained homes on the market at reasonable prices. The DA's (failed) social experiment has hit the area hard and the MO legislature seemingly has declared war on its two big cities. First they made it possible to sell a car over a certain age (5? 6?) without a title. Car theft shot thru the roof. Then they started a campaign to have the loosest gun laws in the country. Mayors and residents from KC and StL have begged them to be reasonable but they, mostly from rural areas and small towns, insist they know best. It has been so very sad to watch.

The Birmingham and Memphis area have really poor economies when you compare them to other similarly sized metro areas. St. Louis City might not have much money, but there's plenty of money in the suburbs. Memphis and Birmingham don't really have a St. Charles County or a West County in their areas such as St. Louis does. Nashville has been popular until just recently as young professionals have been flocking there so there's a been a solid young talent pool for businesses. When you get away from Texas along with the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, there aren't too many southern cities that are growing. New Orleans is shrinking, the entire states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama aren't doing well, outside of maybe Biloxi... however the Biloxi area is only growing in population because of it being along the gulf coast. Atlanta is a corporate hub and businesses have been drawn to Atlanta for it's central location and business friendliness unlike Chicago... we'll see how long that lasts though. Charlotte, North Carolina has also been a business friendly city in a business friendly state. Young professionals are also drawn to those cities so both Atlanta and Charlotte have some good upward momentum through different factors working together where-as many other inland southern areas do not. Orlando is growing but economically it isn't as great as it might seem. People just like moving to Florida for the year round warm weather, and people like Orlando because it's close to the theme parks but I'm not sure the grass is always greener in Orlando as it might seem.

There is a massive Southern rust belt of sorts with industrial decline but significant remaining poluting industry, lousy race relations, broad population stagnation with mostly decline or slow growth, mostly declining cities and small towns and substantial suburban and exurban sprawl even in areas otherwise without growth but fed by continued urban and now older suburban decline. In some cases this area even has a significant European immigrant history but at the very least has a contentious rural to urban domestic migrant one. This Southern Rust Belt is very convoluted in shape and actually continous with the northern Rust Belt, -they are actually one. St. Louis, Memphis and Birmingham are all part of it but so are a great many other Cities, from Texarkana to New Orleans to Augusta, Georgia to Fayetteville and Rocky Mount North Carolina to Danville Virginia to Springfield Missouri to Charlestown West Virginia and beyond. It starts in the Piney Woods of Deep East Texas and northern Louisiana and southwest Arkansas down through French Louisiana, north up the Mississippi Delta including Memphis (and up well into North Alabama as well) and east through the Southern Black Belt, including all but small parts of Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas and more then half of Georgia land area wise, over a third of South Carolina and most of Eastern North Carolina except for parts of the coastal strip. It also extends North from the Mississippi Delta and then Spreads out through most of South-Central Appalachia into most of Kentucky spilling into eastern Tennessee, Western North Carolina, most of West Virginia & Western Maryland and Southeast Ohio as well much of the Ozarks in Southern Missouri and most of western Arkansas except for far northwest Arkansas, and then theough the depressed (and settled by Southerners) parts of the lower Midwest connecting to and being continuous with the Northern Rust belt.
@jKLa
@jKLa Год назад
While some parts of the southern rust belt began to form as early as the great depression in the case of the Mississippi Delta, it really didn't begin to come togather untill after 1980 and become truly obvious untill the late 20'th century. This is unlike the more famous Midwest centered rustbelt which did so in the 1950's and 60's, truly consolidating and intensifying in the 1970's onward and partially recovering in places post 1990 though it remains troubled today. Also the Southern Rust belt is much more convoluted in shape then it's northern counterpart. The peripheral parts of it are in overall growing sunbelt state's. Meanwhile even though the core Deep South states of Louisiana Mississippi and Most of Alabama are within the Southern Rust Belt and are known for their stagnation and poverty, it's easy for many people to ignore and dismiss the condition of those states as simply a matter of them being backwards in culture as they are the most traditionally Southern. Likewise with a State like Kentucky although the regional culture is different. But that doesn't acount for WHY these states have the cultures they do, nor for any other potential reasons why they are actually loosing population in many parts. It's easy to just blame culture but the Culture of most of the remainder of the US South 70 years ago reslly wasn't that much different. The fact is like with the northern Rust Belt these states actually have plenty of positives but are unfortunately at the heart of a rust belt Decline phenomenon which is deeply cultural as well as economic in nature, the two being essentially mirged togather so as to be mutually reinforcing in a way that is very difficult to change even when the desire is there tomdo so, which it often is not. The Southern Rust belt has an economy of lower paying blue collar industry and also of industrial decline, one which is intertwined with and cannot so easily be separated from their populer or political cultures. Their depressed economy's and insular and religious cultures actually tend to reinforce each other in both directions in other words, different in details from yet essentially similer to the more famous Northern Rust Belt.

I hope St. Louis gets to a spot where they are able to enforce the law and prosecute violent criminals and thieves. I think that the fact that so many of these crimes go unprosecuted may play a role in their being committed, as well as other more complex factors. Edit:you mentioned this in the video.

Back in the early or mid 90s at the line. You're quickly transfer between nice neighborhood 2 bad neighborhood or vice-versa which direction you travel. It doesn't matter what city I'm talkin about. The thieving murderers and otherwise criminal element to figure out instead of stealing from each other go to the other part town where they had more. I'm not only have they've done that the branch now I'm following them as they go out into the suburbs. About the last 20 years this has dramatically increased. Plus parents leave taking their children with him and part of the problem sometime and spreading it.

Tell the whole story… I live on Cherokee st and was around when that shooting happened. The girl was defending herself which is why they didn’t charge her.. they had witnesses and camera footage showing what took place. They did in fact charge the male for his role in it all though. People shouldn’t live in the city if they can’t take the city living. I’ve lived Chicago south side (born and raised) and now at Louis south side for the past 13 years. I can walk to a store here and the worst happens is crack heads ask for change for the bus.

St. Louis has no future. Many years ago nearly 800,000 people, a thriving city. Now less than 300,000, circling the drain. Originally from the area, escaped decades ago. What a shame.

Videos like this are important to open eyes. This is why we need to make America great again for the working man who wants to live a lower middle class life. It makes me fighting mad driving through north St Louis and East St Louis. Sadly, until demographics change or there's a religious revival combined with thousands of new entry level FT $20/hr blue collar jobs with chance of promotion, STL will still be crap. Without strong two parent Christian homes, those areas won't be bettered. And if north St Louis is bettered with federal funds, floirissant will decay even more. I know I'm talking about parts of town not shown here, but I'm hoping to move to the city, specifically near my parish, St Francis de Sales oratory, "the cathedral of South St Louis", near fox park or thereabouts. Also, menya rui is wicked yummy if you've never been! Sugarwitch has the best ice cream in the city!

The South SIde went down hill in the early 90's. Government shipped in Bosnians and Serbs, then they made many of the homes section 8's for the new immigrants, and with the decline of the North Side and the build up of South County and Jefferson County, white flight took off and left it too the immigrants, hoosiers and the former North Siders. Now it is complete garbage, could not pay me to live there and I was born and raised and lived in it till 2000.

That makes sense... I was born in 1991. And I was wondering when south city went downhill. My dad said there wasn't all the blacks like there is now on the southside back in the 1970s. The people look rundown, poor, and ugly in south city. Dad says it was nothing like that back in the day. Lol
