What is the HIGHEST recorded F1 RPM?

Ever since the Formula 1 existed, there were no rules regulating how high engine can rev. With improved technology and level of engineering, engines of the new era began to rev to incredibly high revolutions per minute.
The rules regulated how big the engine can be, how wide the cylinder bore can get and since there was only natural aspiration allowed, the only way to gain more power the easier way (instead of making the engines more thermally efficient) was to increase the redline. First, the 1995 V10s quickly reached 16,000 rpm and it did not take long to cross the 17,000 rpm milestone. These primacies belonged to BMW which was also the first one to reach the 19K barrier... with over 900 hp in 2002.
In 2006, the rules changed and the engine were obliged to have as much as 2,400cc of engine displacement with a V-8 engine configuration. The maximum bore was also set at 98 mm at most resulting in a stroke of a little less than 40 mm. This was also the last year not regulating the engine's rpm and that was the key aspect. This was the year when Formula 1 engines reached or crossed the 20,000 rpm level, in some cases even 20,500 rpm, namely Cosworth, Renault, Honda and Toyota. Not every single of them achieved it on a track, but they did it anyway. #shorts

Mean piston velocities remain pretty much the same regardless of what rpm an engine spins to, (i.e. stroke is very short on a high revving motor). Mean piston velocity is 26.5 m/s at the 20,500 rpm redline of the v8 above (39.8mm stroke), by comparison the Ferrari 458 and Honda F20c are around 24.3 and 24.6 m/s at redline. Since the piston has to be accelerated and decelerated every single cycle, it's difficult to achieve greater mean speeds. And funnily enough, the piston is usually the weakest link here too - any extra strengthening just means more mass, which is counter-productive and results in even greater forces acting to tear the wrist pin out
@Cloud-zq8mf
@Cloud-zq8mf 3 года назад
For piston speed is not very impressive now. But for piston ring acceleration, and keep prevent from fluttering, it's awesome.

Its pneumatic so no camshaft or lobes thats why an engine stall is deadly for those engines. Ignition and fuel is not a problem at all. Injectors are just flooding the the cylinders and the ignition Happens by itself to a certain rpm it gets ignited then just keeps firing and the last step is pre ignition or self ignition. Thats also why the flames are shooting out while dropping in rpm allmost like anti lag. The rotary forces are mainly in conrods and the bolt that connects the piston with it and the crankshaft is literally non existent its smaller in flank size then in a bike engine google it.

The main advantage of revving high is that the instantaneous torque is much lower so parts don't have to be as strong which result in a much lighter engine. The trade-off is much more expensive and exotic materials for abrasion resistance and more aggressive gear ratios which would be less efficient.

Pre changes in 2007 I could hear the formula races in Melbourne Australia from my house on the other side of the city (maybe 5km), it was always kinda cool but now can't hear anything at all. Especially 2020-21 as the race wasn't even on :(

The Tachometer on my 2010 Kawasaki ZX6R went up to 20k. 0-90mph in 1st gear, no problem. Liter bikes couldn't take it off the line, their top end was much higher, but zipping around a track, they couldn't keep up and it was stock.

Even the springs in this engine had to be hollow inside and compressed with gas so it would expand faster than the regular springs, otherwise the valves weren’t opening and closing fast enough

I think it’s much more impressive what F1 is doing with the engines today. The fact that the engines perform at such a high level while not using a crazy fuel source and the limitations on the fuel capacity are nuts.

I miss the days when motorsport are full of racing teams and manufacturers pushing the boundaries of their respective machines, also the competitiveness that it brings along. Rules keeps its safe, won't argue with that but with so much rules it makes it boring to watch and hear. Even your weekend drive on your local circuit is more thrilling than the motorsports nowadays.

I have to say the BMW Williams era of 2001-2003 had the most impressive Engine for me. That RPM, that sound, that power... 😍 That durability 😢 Even I wasn't a Montoya fan at that time I really liked the team and the car. And The Michael™, Montoya and Ralf were absolutely on 🔥🔥 back then 👍

Let me remind you that Honda, suzuki and recently, kawasaki, all built road-legal, all-weather usable, pretty reliable bikes with 20k+ rpm redlines. Like, thats an INSANE number for any sort of engine.
