Earth? Mobius? One World? Two Worlds? The name of Sonic's planet (and just how many he has) is a surprisingly loaded topic, but one that finally has some definitive answers. Kinda. Let's get into it.
Thank you again to ‪@ChannelPup‬ for editing this weird video!

I think humans existing alongside sonic and his friends on the same planet is much better than them being separated. It makes the world much more interesting and it’s way cooler that things like Station square and green hill can exist in the same world. I’m glad they confirmed it was just one planet because it’s much more interesting then the two sides of the world being separated.

Mario's world is just called "Earth." Some fans have nicknamed it the "Mushroom World" although, that gets confusing when you consider that the setting of SMB3 is ALSO called the Mushroom World, and it's just a collection of 7 small kingdoms within the larger Mushroom Kingdom. I don't think it's ever been called "Mario's World." I'm pretty sure it's just called Earth whenever it's mentioned. Edit: Some more fan stuff! Odyssey finally confirmed that Mario's planet is separate from ours. But there are still a handful of spin-offs from the early days that have Mario visiting real-world earth. Most recently, Mario Kart Tour and Mario Kart 8's Booster Course Pass have featured tracks based on real world locations. Some fans have nicknamed real-world earth "Tour earth," since in modern contexts we mostly just see it through tracks in Mario Kart Tour. Meanwhile Mario's planet is "Mario Earth" or "M-Earth."

The two main reasons to novelize a movie (beyond having another product to sell) are increase accessibility, since for one reason for another some people just can't go see a movie or buy the home release , but can buy a book, and to expand on the story, movies' ability to tell their stories are limited by runtime, novelizations don't have that limitation and can include scenes and or details that couldn't make it into the movie, as well as expand on and elaborate on what was in the movie.

Literary art is its own legitimate form of adaptation, even as YA novels for simple reading, it's all for the purpose of expanding your tastes even a little bit over time, like all human growth in all fields. And by that same token to the OPPOSITE, the only reason to wait for the audio-visual version would be if you're not only a child, but determined to STAY on that level, like "I'm NEVER going to appreciate the spoken word, and I' proud to be an elitist to the tune of that". Sad thing is I bet these people haven't even seen movies like Babel, that does have it's ways to communicate higher conepts in audio-visual form. So they don't have media literacy in words OR in visuals. I mean, it's fine I guess, but if you would read horribly written books like Harry Potter with any understanding about what makes a mind beatiful and nuanced and open, you could spare yourself a lot of headache when you'd notice it was missing since book one. The whole book reads dry like a wiki summary, and the average action film is just the audio-visual equivalent of the same thing, so it's no wonder when it turns out to be produced by characters like Harvey Weinstein. They are reflections of how the author COMMUNICATES ideas, and that communication is who they REINFORCE bad ideas back to themselves in their minds. It SHOWS, when you have NEVER IN YOUR LIFE conversed with a diverse cast of people from various walks of life and understood their persepctives.

I also grew up with Mobius. The Fleetway comics, AoStH, so on and so forth. Fleetway had Earth as a separate planet, so when Sonic X rolled around, that made sense to me. The way I like to think of things is that Mobius is a continent *on* Earth, home to the various islands where all our beloved rainbow rodents live. The reason the islands are so fantastical and radically different from the rest of the world is because of the influence of the Chaos Emeralds. Simple, coherent.
@kraikein
@kraikein Год назад
I should mention that the Sonic movie’s novelizations do make their ways into the film canon. For example, when Sonic does his little glowy blue energy, it was referred to as Chaos Energy. Now the author did admit this was meant to be nothing more than an Easter egg initially, but it did make it into the movies, as the energy Sonic, Knuckles and Robotnik (when he gets the Master Emerald powers) use is referred to as Chaos Energy. So in theory it could in the future be name dropped in the movies. Also in regards as to why films have novelizations, can be a good way to include scrapped content, or alternate scenes, as well as generally being used to market the film’s release. Probably a good example is Godzilla King of the Monsters novelization that had a whole scene with Kong that according to Michael Dougherty is meant to be canon to the films.

I think novelizations and books in general allow the use our imagination that should be written of as inferior just because they're not a visual peice of media.

In Sonic Unleashed nobody seems all that surprised by a giant anthropomorphic blue hedgehog walking around talking to people, so it makes sense its the same world. @CptJistuce

Actually, that creates a wild possibility... if the islands are closely tied to the chaos emeralds, and the talking bipedal wildlife with super powers are all from the islands, there's an implication that they might exist in such an unnatural form BECAUSE of that close association with the chaos emeralds. Sonic and company are chaos radiation mutations of normal animals.

@sboinkthelegday3892
@sboinkthelegday3892 Год назад
But that's jsut not what Sonic IS. That's all western insert to copy derivative western inspirations. And THE REALLY awkward insistence that, because people heard it once in Archie comics, now they can't buckle an inch from "believing" it, like that's how they would write history as well: never admit to mistakes, and always stand by the Bible. Not a good attutude to HAVE, or train yourself to think like. But, case in point in favor of that, Splatoon does the exact same thing, and it's purely Japanese (if you would make that iffy argument about... race of whatever). Just literalize the "moebius" world as future earth, when clearly, it does not follow any of real earth's basic elements. I mean it just becomes a CARTOON world that could NEVER be the future of this reality, and can't retain the kind of plausible tone that kind of serious take kinda assumes. At that point, why even do it? And just using English words like "hell" doesn't mean anything, because West is so backwards they wouldn't HAVE a word for many of the things that are common phrases in other languages. Think about ALL the idiomatic phrasing, do you also take the term "mofo" literally and pretty much EVERYONE has a lot of common with Chris Chan in USA? No, they just have to shorten it "hell" because that's the turn of phrase that American AUDIENCES understand. The japanese/Korean "jigoku" isn't even nearly the same place as the hebrew Gehenna where "hell" comes form. And it's not even an "afterlife" in Judaism, it was a literal thing. However, Infinite directly references Eggman trying to beat Sonic "for years", so that's proof that Eggman and sonic anthros are aware of span of time that they are not directly bound to, because they live "for years" while growing at most a year or two. This means, they are aware of relative passing of time the same way we are aware of 2-dimensional strips of land we walk on.

The original JP manual for Sonic 1 makes no mention of the planet's name. I doubt that it was actually specified originally, because it was clearly a fantasy zone with no connection to reality, and it didn't MATTER what the inhabitants called their world. The only location that needed a name was South Island, because that's where the game happened. To a degree, the stages needed names, but... I'm not convinced those are all carrying their actual names. Scrap Brain Zone is definitely carrying the name of Robotnik's fortress, the Scrap Brain(this is in the JP manual). Green Hill Zone sure, EVERYONE has a place named Green Hill. But Marble Zone? I refuse to believe there's a place just named Marble(and also refuse to believe that every location name actually ends in "zone"). It is actually odd that Sega America DID specify a name for the planet... though it was the 90s, sci-fi was cool, and there's no faster way to establish you're IN SPACE than saying the game's set on an alien planet. If you don't make sure everyone knows he's an alien, then Sonic's just some lame-o cartoon character for kids, and we can't have that.

Novelizations usually are written from an earlier draft of the script. Doctor Who famously made use of them in the Target adaptations during the 1970's and 1980's for the 1960's stories that weren't commonly available on home media or were lost with Tomb of the Cybermen being thought lost til the episodes were found in Hong Kong. Stories like Ghostlight from Season 26 has a novelization where it was made more clear on what was going on than the broadcasted story due to the editing job that left it a story which is somewhat hard to follow for a number of people. Or in the cases of Red Dwarf, they'd completely change up how the stories flows in the novels.

The way I see it, it's simply a much larger Earth, like One Peice. Not to mention it would have to be a pretty damn large planet considering, and I'm surprised no fans have brought this up, that the Lost Hex, a planet mind you, could mange to stay hidden in the clouds of Earth's stratosphere. As to explain how humans, regular animals, and anthropomorphic animals like Sonic and co. exist it's quite simple. Essentially it's like how in real life humans evolved from apes. We branched off into our own species, yet still co-exist with other species of ape. Said ape species having similar genetic and physical features to humans yet looking vastly different. This is what I figure happened in Sonic's version of Earth, except not limited to primates. Sonic and friends are, like Humans, a more evolved branch off of their respective animal species.

I’m also a romantic, so I ate up all the relationship stuff in the comics. Even if it was brief, I was glad Sonic and Sally were able to work through all the BS. Given the concept of a multiverse, ALL the possibilities for Mobius could fit. I myself like the idea of Mobius being a city on Earth. It would include areas such as Highspeed Highway & Station Square. And as Robotnik's hometown, you can find his Casino located on the Mobius Strip. All of which would be apart of the Metropolis Zone along with the other neighboring zones like Green Hills, Sonic's stomping grounds. Also Angel Island (thanks to the power of the Master Emerald) would be a "sky island" featuring places like Mushroom Hill, Sky Hill, Windy Valley & Mystic Ruins(Aquatic Ruins when the island falls into the ocean).

I think just calling it Earth simplifies a lot of things, but given this is a world and thus there's plenty of different cultures, you could easily have your cake and eat it too without overcomplicating things with any "two worlds" theories (like Archie and Sonic X did): maybe some call it Earth and others call it Mobius, and we only see most of the ones that call it Earth (or it gets lost in translation and BECOMES Earth) for simplicity's sake. Also, given Chip says "earth" in lowercase, I would assume that's not really referring to the name of the planet and more just "the ground we stand on" (which would still make sense for basically a summoning chant of holy temples). Would have to doublecheck Eggman's SA2 announcement to see if it's the same thing there but it could be an exception. What's interesting is if the planet was called Mobius, it'd give an interesting double-meaning to that one final boss track in Riders Zero Gravity, named Mobius Strip (obviously in reference to it basically being a one-sided loop)

I have a thought about Sonic Forces. It was said in that game that Eggman took over 99% of the world, yet it seems, based on the context of the story, that only the various anthropomorphic animals were affected. Did the humans just accept the dictatorship of one Dr. Ivo Robotnik, leaving the doctor to focus his efforts exclusively on the animal people? (Our Great Eggy Lord and Savior) Were the humans already dead, or otherwise incapacitated, by this time in the story? (La de da de dai, Genocide) Did the game just conveniently skip over any part that involved humans in the story. (Convenient plot device) Actually, that third one makes the most sense based on how Sonic Forces was written. They already skipped over most of the story with a few lines of text. Why not just throw out any part of the narrative that even remotely involved humans?
@Skitskl33

I don’t get why Sega keeps trying to depict Sonic’s world as having only humans or only mobians. Humans and mobians living together in one world makes more sense then Sonic and co living in a world with only humans or a world with only mobians. A world with only mobians (like Sonic Forces and the IDW comics) makes no sense since Eggman and his family members clearly exist and are humans. Why would the Robotnik family be the only humans that exist in this world? How could they be the only humans that exist here? How did Gerald Robotnik find a wife to have kids with if only Robotniks exist in this world? How did Eggman’s dad find a wife to have a little baby Eggman with if only the Robotnik bloodline exists in this world? Clearly there must be other humans that exist. So why act like only mobians populate the planet? And having a world like Sonic 06 and Sonic Unleashed where only humans exist makes no sense either because then where did Sonic and his friends come from? They couldn’t have just popped into existence out of nowhere, they must have had mobian parents who made them which means there must be other mobians that exist in the world. Sonic and his friends can’t be the only mobians that exist. Sega should just populate Sonic’s world with both humans and mobians. That’s the only way things could make sense. They should just make Sonic’s world like the world from Bojack Horseman where both humans and anthropomorphic animals coexist in the same world and it’s totally normal.
