Definitely sounds like the A/C compressor. Sounds like the clutch is slipping before engaging.
@RashanToyaTravel

I think it's the govenor cut-out switch/sensor to the compressor. This happens when then the AC has been over filled. The govenor will cut the compressor off to prevent a pressure blow. This happened with my 2012 tundra and all it needed was a good vacuum on the system with the correct amount of refrigerant.

I would call Japan Toyota engineer department and informed them the problem. They need to hear these problems so they can be corrected and pressure these dealerships that are not going the extra mile to make a good name for Toyota. I believe you sell a good product, you need to stand behind it 100 percent.

I have a 2019 that does the same thing. Only happens after sitting at least 24 hours. I haven't taken to the dealer yet because they'll tell me the same thing they told him. I've seen others on forums with the same issue. Some have reported that Toyota replaced their AC compressor as a result.

My new 2020 did this exact noise, but only once. It had been sitting for a week. I turned on the A/C right after start-up. Loud enough that it really startled me. I agree with others, I think it’s the compressor clutch chattering or dragging on engagement. I’ll be watching mine closely.

Time to go to a different dealer or request / demand the regional Toyota warranty manager review the issue. Document everything make sure they writ it on the service request including their refusal to keep the truck and duplicate the issue. If all else fails contact a lemon law attorney - time for Toyota to step up. This and other quality issues are popping up all over including eliminating the oil cooler. I’m waiting for that class action suit to break.

Holy Cr..p, Im glad I stumbled on this. Ive been in my 2021 TRD Pro Tundra maybe 3 months, and I just experienced this! This is accurate in the sense that it is hot, ( Florida) and sat for 4 days outside in an airport parking lot. I turned vehicle on, turned on AC and whoosh, got this sound. I will take this to toyota now that Im reading these comments! Huge thanks to everyone and the person bringing this up and recording this. Now if I could fix this wind noise at higher speeds, The seals on this thing are horrible.

Hello I just had mine fixed by my dealer, I bought a 2020 Tundra in January 2020 and whenever I started the AC right after I started my truck in the morning I would get a very loud bang. After about a year (due to covid) I was able to record the issue. I sent the video to my service guy at Toyota and I left my truck a Saturday and they recreated the noise on Tuesday. Turned out to be the clutch on the AC compressor.got it back on Wednesday. Truck no longer has the issue. Hope this helps.

I have a 2020 sr5 and it happens exactly the same thing as described, and when the ac is turned on sometimes it feels like you hit the truck from underneath with a big rock or something, I took it to toyota but of course they wanted to recreate the thing when i told them it only happens once it’s turned on and I already had it on so of course they couldn’t recreate it!I think it’s the compressor kicking in but somehow after sitting for a while , it sticks and that’s when you can hear the grinding noise

From Sacramento California, same issue for my 2020 tundra with 10k miles. Only happen once on a cold start turning the a/c on or having it on before starting the engine. Outside temperature don't need to exceed 100 or above.

I noticed the same issue on my 2021 tundra when sitting a few days. I also get the noise with or without the ac on. Meaning just when starting the heat after a few days in cold weather in the upper mid west. I even tried driving about 500 feet before turning it on and it actually was enough to slow my truck down for about 2 seconds then resumed full power. Not sure what it is but it’s not just the ac. It appears to be related to the entire climate control system.

Had a 2017 5.7 that had no issues, i traded it in for a 2020 trd pro, I'm having this same issue with the ac/starting truck up. It's startling at times. Sounds and feels like a metal on metal crunch/bang. AC in the 2020 takes much longer to get as cold as the 2017, which was like an ice cooler. I should have stuck with my 2017...smh.

I have a 2018 toyota trd sport 4x4 crewmax, I had that same problem after leaving my truck for about a day or 2 without starting it. I took it to my toyota service center and had to leave it for 2 days. Then when they did start it they said they heard it but it wasn't long enough to decifer what or where the problem came from. So my service guy said if it starts getting worst sounding or something not working on my AC call him. So they have it on file if anything happens. It still happens after I haven't started my truck for a couple of days but it hasn't got louder or worst sounding.

Compressor clutches have to be set to correct gap. If the gap is too wide it will shudder and make that clap sound. After a short time of operation the spring tends to settle and narrow the gap therefore it doesn’t make that sound as noticeable. The hub of the couch has thin shims that look like washers. In the compressor overhaul manual it’ll tell you what the gap should be. At least that’s how some were and might still be.

@rudythecuban1589
@rudythecuban1589 3 года назад
@@chief1972 not necessarily, specially since temperatures and weather conditions may have an effect of the tensile strength of the spring that disengages it, and it’s the electro magnetic reaction that engages it.

2017 Pro here, no sound like that, and lately ive gone a week or more without driving my truck. However, I had an old Pontiac that did something similar, and it was because the system was OVER pressurized, and when you turn on the compressor, the excess pressure made it harder to start. At least worth a look at the pressure level. Or it could be there's not enough lubricant in the refrigerant, and its sticking. I would push the dealership to at least empty and refill the system.

Hey Tundra dude have me a sound question also. Was having problems with my secondary air valve stuck open, also a couple o2sensors bad. The o2 s have been bad awhile so that’s not it. Main reason for hanging part was had to reset code to often because throws truck into limp mode. After changing part everything’s was great even took it 4 hrs away to a lake during memorial weekend. Several days later was on way to get oil change tire n rotated but on the way the was making a horrible sound which seemed to resonate from passengers side wheel area, and mainly during acceleration. Sounds like blowing air thru some kinda metal tube, like if you were blowing through a medal fence post. Truck runs but seems to be getting worse gas mileage/efficiency. Thanks for your and an6 else’s help out!!

My 2019 camry does the same thing. That is a harsh A/C compressor engagement. I took it in as I had a minor oil seepage on the high side block cut out sensor and shraider valve area. They vacuumed it out measured charge and oil removed. Told me it was good but I'm sure they added a tad refrigerant and oil as it hasn't made the noise since. If it sits the oil in the compressor and lines drains down a bit and are not under pressure and suspension to lubricate everything. I would definitely have it evacuated and check the refrigerant and oil amount. If its under warranty insist they do it. FYI make them print out all the TSB's for your car or truck. The STEALERSHIPS will never tell you about these and are not required to tell you possibly costing you thousands in diagnostics and repairs .

Bump up to all who said refrigerant low issues. On Toyota the do that by design possibly to save the compressor (vice running continously without coolant which is also a lubricant to internal compressor parts) and make the mechanic look at refrigerant levels noticing the obvious click and clunk! Mine (2009 toyota tundra 5.7), did it years ago and I charged my system and no more issues!

Are you me? I have the EXACT noise, only happens after truck has been sitting for a while. If I go into a store and back out and the AC is on, it won't do it, but if its sitting in the driveway and I haven't driven it for the day, it'll sound exactly like that.

Can you explain this noise coming from my brand new 2023 Tundra Crewmax SR 4x4. I have owned tundras since 2009 and never encountered this noise before. When putting the truck into gear or back in park I get a noise that sounds like something is hydraulic raising or lowering but the truck doesn’t move up or down. When I figure out how to upload the video I will.

Is it a quick sound? Maybe the automatic parking brake
@eugeneocron47
@eugeneocron47 Год назад
@@TundraDude34 Yes it’s quick. Now that you mention it, it reminds you of a truck driver putting on air brakes but not quite the air sound more like hydraulic. I don’t know how to upload the video to a RU-vid site from my iPhone where you can hear it clear.

I HAVE A 2006 SEQUOIA WITH A VERY STRANGE, INTERMITTEN COLD START VIBRATION. IT ONLY HAPPENS AT FIRST START, AND CAN RANGE FROM VERY SLIGHT, TO INTOLLERABLE. I FEEL IT WHEN DRICING BETWEEN 20 MPH UP TO HIGHWAY SPEEDS. UPON RESTART OF VEHICLE AND RESUMING DRIVING, THE VIBRATION IS GONE. IS THERE A ELECTRONIC MOTER MOUNT OR SOMETHING? IT IS MY WIFES CAR, AND SHE IS GOING CRAZY OVER THIS ISSUE.

It’s the clutch on the AC compressor that’s making that noise when it kicks in because the engine is in high River when you first start the truck and the AC comes on the same time

Brand new clutch it’s not worn in yet it’s probably made of aluminum or some soft metal so it’s making a racket when it’s wearing in

I would say to replace the compressor.

Solenoid engaging on airconditioner pump. Over time it has got more slack in the engagement plate and creates that sound! Dosent do any good to repair it now because the part comes with the pump could last several years at any rate it isn't going to go out anytime soon just annoying!

The Tundra AC clunk is perfectly NORMAL, there are literally hundreds of people that have experienced this on Tundra,com! It ONLY happens when you start the AC when the truck is cold. It is caused by the AC clutch kicking in.

That system has to much high side pressure and that is a compressor releive valve.
