Dunalastair House didn't have it's roof removed on purpose to avoid anything, during the 1960s the lead was stolen from the roof, and back then it wasn't viable to repair it, and there wasn't any grants to apply for neither, so it was just left to rot.
This island with the spire is called Eilean nam Faoileag. It’s Scots Gaelic literally meaning “seagull island.” And the lake that this is in is Loch Rannoch.
many castles in Scotland and around are missing roofs, hence appearing to have burned down, due to some odd way of taxation back then. Bit like how they used to taxate you according to the amount of windows or chimneys your house had, so people started bricking up windows and combining chimneys into single offshoots, there was a tax loophole that you didn't have to pay taxes for a building if it didn't have a roof, so when these mansion owners went bust and couldn't keep paying taxes for their huge mansion, they took off the roofs and left the mansions like that to weather, maybe in hopes of coming back later in better times to rebuilt them.
On the arson note, a lot of listed buildings in Scotland that can't get legally demolished end up being suspiciously torched in order to be allowed to be torn down. It's quite common honestly and incredibly sad.
It's not just Scotland. It's well known throughout the whole of the UK. The same when devs buy old buildings to redevelop into fancy flats and they find asbestos and they have to pay out and remove it all legally. Funny enough, work stops, and some young local teens get paid off to torch the place a few weeks later.
I love that we just never know what we're going to get from you boys. History, scenery, cooking, laughs (or all of the above plus more)...you are the best! ♥ Received my latest merch order this week. Thanks! 🙂
You three have to come and visit us at Lochgilphead we have castles/stone circles and caiirns/Dunadd fort/Clan houses most derelict even the odd asylum thrown in you can park on my drive opposite the sea and use our electric water and the bog..
The house’s contents were sold in the mid fifties after the current owner’s grandmother’s death and the house was badly vandalised in the sixties when the lead was stolen from the roof. In those days it was not viable to repair it and no grants were available and it deteriorated very quickly from then on with most removable parts being stolen.
MacGregor's cave isn't far from Dunalastair Castle, it was used as a hideout by Rob Roy MacGregor to evade the redcoats, so many random wee spots everywhere
I dread to think what that van smells like after you lot have been sleeping in it. Takes the term ‘Dutch oven’ to a whole new level. Great vid as always.❤
I'd love to go back to Scotland to see if any of the trees i planted had the chance to grow up. But i won't miss the midges, they're bloody horrible! 🤬
You should have left that island as soon as you realised there were nesting birds. You can hear them calling in distress in the video! And we don’t have lakes in Scotland, we have loch’s.
Just wanted to let you guys know that your show makes me laugh each time I watch. Cherish everyday you three are together good friendships are priceless.❤❤❤❤❤❤😊❤❤❤❤❤
Tell the nosy people, you're Archaeologists. Just out studying the ages of vastkes, medieval castles. 😊 Usually they'll guve you some info, if they even know, and usually never do😂 Loving these videos fellas❤❤❤xxx
Loving the vids lads, so much to see here in Scotland. We may not have ever won the world Cup Al but we did invent everything the modern world relies on, so there's that.
The London Psychogeographical Society, when it was in existence, had a thing about Edzell Castle.....a daft bunch who attempted to lift the Houses Of Parliament into the air by sheer mental force alone, & believed themselves to have shifted them slightly......in their daftness, I do believe the L. P. S. did follow members of the Royal Family around the U. K. presumably spending some money to do so.......year after year of the L. P. S.'s life, they claimed the Royal Family, yearly, travelled to Edzell Castle nearish Aberdeen.....& always stood around a hole in the ground, looking down into it, like, praying or something.....I do believe that was correctly objectively reported by them. Not that I checked. The google hits caused me to express interest in Edzell 1950s American cars, certainly big enough to continue HOE explorations in, looking at a RU-vid filmita, 15 or 20 minutes long or something, put up by someone driving an Edzell car.......he informs you brakes are not part of its design, a revolutionary & economical idea.
@upthehoe which one of you bunch does all the replying? And would you ever consider letting a fan come along for an explore ? Even if he offered to buy all the merch 🤭😁
Ruin number 3 looks like an 1800s water pumping tower, theres only a few left around the world still in operation... the pump tower would pump water to locals
The salad - The air pouring out of the boat - Al throwing himself on the ground - The pump making a loud noise - Disembarking - crackhead jelly bean. this video is full of skits that have me crying, great work boiks.
Your channel reminds me of the American channel fishing with ayo ( not really a fishing channel as such ) but it’s a group of friends doing fun stuff like you lot except with our English humour .
Yes, that is a lookout tower back in the day. In case any enemies came to the territory, they can notify their camp wherever their camp was. And as you see there's two sets of Windows so there was a first floor and the second floor and they even had their guns back in the day with with gunpowder and those steel round bullets
Used to live round there , kinloch rannoch ... Yeah it's for tax reasons there's no roof .... A baronial home... A deliberate roof off ..... Tight bastards..
Yo, check it, in this battle, I'm bringing the heat, Urbex, you're weak, just crumbling concrete. Yellow boats, they glide, white boats ain't got the flow, And when it comes to the water, Jim's the one to know. Greece, oh please, it's the land of gods and myths, While you're stuck in the rubble, we're making hits after hits. So step up if you dare, but you can't compete, In this rap game, Jim and Greece can't be beat!
Totally unrelated but that £9 for 2 ice creams kid that’s gone viral reminds me of Al (if he was a little girl)! Has he got a secret love child in Burnley? 🍦
What is wierd to me is that you can't go wild camping in the UK... would have been cool to do a tour like this and camp at each site near or in the castles. Like here in Canada, I can camp wherever I want on crown land, provided I don't have to cross over private property to get there. Most places I can even hunt and target shoot as well.
