Bourque trade wasn’t bad for the bruins, they got a proper return for him at the time and he was literally about to retire. They treated a franchise legend with the class he deserved, if anything you could argue it was a good deal for the bruins fanbase seeing him happy winning it all

@@bruinsdiehards also yeah on another note and my opinion, the Joe Thornton trade has to be one of the worst ever. that’s like trading pasta for nothing. Thorton was essentially that same type of player back then then he went on to go and score like 120 points with San Jose. He was just such a great caliber player and the Bruins missed entirely on getting a good return.

Hamilton requested a trade. We didn't want to move him. He was also moved out of Calgary for the same reasons. He's a weird guy. B's getting Bourque a cup is not a bad trade. We took the hit, but we did him right which is all that matters. You don't see that enough. Joe Thornton was a terrible trade at the time, however if you watch the trade tree that Steve Dangle did on it, it actually turned out pretty good for us, and considering we won a cup and Thornton never did, I'd say we won in the end.

i couldnt argue more that bourque trade was the right choice. we werent going to win a cup, we needed to rebuild and we got an actual package (even if it was underwhelming) for someone we were trying to get a cup. every side of the deal won. we got to rebuild and got a package, col got a still elite LD and bourque got his cup similarly with Thornton while in a vacuume it is bad, with the added context that he was going to want a massive contract and u had bergy and krejci in the system about to take over, while what they got wasnt great it 10000% makes sense. one of the 3 was going to have to go and imo picking bergy and krejci over 1 thornton was correct considering SJS didnt even make a finals till he was near retirement and boston had already won a cup and been in another final AND had another final on the way. package sent back wasnt great but trading him was a great idea

And who was the stiff goalie Washington dumped on us. Memories...oh Bruins memories😢 Thank God for Thomas and 2011 or we'd still be looking at 1972.😮

@bruinsdiehards Jim Carey, you nailed it. Actually won the Vezina for Capitals and they INSISTED we take him in that trade. God, he was terrible. We had a stretch there with some bad goalies - John Blue, couldn't even find someone as good as Marco Barron to man the net. Hows that for name dropping? Oh yea I've watched a lot of Bruins Hockey. I was at Mike Moffats last game vs Edmenton a 6 -6 tie Bs should have won 6 -3. Last time he was ever in net guy coame down wing, went around net and Moffat never moved. Stood there like a statue, and the guy just flipped it in. Steve Kasper and Gretzky both had 2 goals, I believe. Sorry, but I don't recall your Dad if he went by Renzi. When did he play?

Hey, is that guy who filled in for Jack Edwards last year get the full time gig? I was not a fan. If we get him and then the Celtics have that kid taking over for Gorman - gross to both teams play by play. I'm not saying that just because I was so used to Jack and Mike, I just don't like the replacements style. Especially Celtics guy....cookie cutter off the assembly line of announcers. Lame.

The front office screwed Thorton and the coaching, he was to young to get the Captain's C and they wouldn't let Mike Sullivan (who was an amazing coach) build his own team. I think the front office screwed the pooch in those years. They also did it with Tim Thomas, 3 head coaches and 2 gm's tried to replace Tim Thomas. The system has only become effective since they let the gm and coach do their jobs in recent years. My 2 cent

i am a bruins fan myself they're my second favorite team and i honestly think that the joe thornton trade shouldn't be a big deal since they were able to win a cup without him and nearly did so again in 2019 and ofc came 2 wins short in 2013 and if he had stayed who knows if those things would've happened since the rosters in those upcoming years might not have been the same. Thornton would eventually become the face of the franchise in san jose playing a much bigger role there than he ever would've in boston so i honestly don't understand why people are still so upset about that trade
