"The only possible answer is "Not drawn to scale." If you accept the three measurements, but take the apparent angles to be incorrect, the two sides that appear to meet at a right angle do not actually meet. So, even though it is not drawn, a line can be drawn that connects their "floating" endpoints. It most likely completes a quadrilateral, but could be co-linear with either of the two sides, making a triangle of any type.

Why do 5 people upvote this ? He is mixing things up. It is not a right triangle because the squares do not add up but that doesn't mean that it is not a triangle. It is not a triangle at all because one side is bigger than the sum of the other two. (All assuming ,of course, that the numbers are supposed to represent lengths)

@Astrobrant2 3 месяца назад
Skipbrewer8101 gave you the right response. This doesn't involve the Pythagorean Theorem. That was my first inclination, but then I realized that the correct approach is that A + B _must_ be greater than C. So it isn't a possible triangle. I think the question should have been asked verbally, without a diagram. Putting that triangle in the question was deliberately misleading -- not really fair, IMO.

If “The shortest distance between two points is a straight line” is true, and it is, then the solution to this problem is obvious. Since one combination of distances fails to meet this standard (11 is greater than 4+6), these three lines cannot meet in a triangle. I realize that this application of logic does not meet mathematical standards in that it doesn’t automatically differentiate between right and acute triangles.

What is this shape called? Well, looking at the "Shape", it's definitely a Triangle (a 3 sided polygon). But, if the 3 numbers (4, 6, 11) next to the sides of the shape (again, triangle) are supposed to indicate the length of each of the sides, then taken together, these 3 lengths are impossible for a triangle. So, to answer the question, "What is this shape called?", it's a Triangle. A triangle with mislabeled side lengths, but a shape in the form of a triangle none the less. On the other hand, a shape with side lengths of (4, 6, 11) cannot be arranged to form a closed shape like a triangle. So, I expect that this is a "Trick" question, and the "desired" answer is "d) No triangle."

Good question, and I got it right, but it should probably be asked verbally instead of using a diagram. "What polygon has three sides with lengths of 4, 6, and 11?" And then the choices should not include "no triangle". I think it should just be "none of the above". Also don't include "quadrilateral" since that would be possible with a _fourth_ side. And it can't be an acute triangle as it does not satisfy a^2+b^2>c^2, b^2+c^2>a^2, and c^2+a^2>b^2. It also can't be a quadrilateral as it does not have 4 sides, Therefore, only the answer D "No Triangle" can be the correct answer.

This is not a triangle. The simplest way is to use the Triangle Inequalty Theorem. That is, a+b should be equal to, or greater than c; a+c, should be equal to or grater than b, and c+b should be greater than or equal to a. Now, we know that 11+4 is greater than 6, and 11+6 is greater than 4. However, 6+4=10 and 10 is less than 11. Under the theorem, it's not a triangle.
