One thing to note is the Eve app was just updated with Thread section that shows which devices are connected via Thread and if they are routing (Nanoleaf Essentials, Eve Energy) or sleepy endpoints (Eve Door & Window, Eve Aqua).

I find my nanoleaf bulbs all show endpoint instead of router in Eve's app, is there any setting I miss?
@CaptRam1u5
@CaptRam1u5 3 года назад
@@robblelee121 do you have just the Nanoleaf bulb or do you have some of the Eve gear as well? I suspect that the bulbs start as end-points (non-sleepy) and only get promoted to routers when a sleepy end-point device or another regular end-point is added to the Thread network.

@Jay tech addict Homekit Couple of things I would check. 1) make sure HomePod mini is working as expected in Home app. 2) Check for updated bulb firmware (looks like latest FW is 1.3.24 (2020-11-10)). If there is an update available let it update then wait 5min, if it still isn't switching to Thread try removing it from HomeKit and re-adding it. 3) Make sure at least one bulb is near the HomePod mini.

And could I configure the bulbs with a smartbutton? So I could just walk in the room, click the button, and boom whatever i have configured it goes right to it? Or do I NEED the hub to have the network working together? I appreciate your time, and much love from the U.S.
@GreeniusGenius
@GreeniusGenius 2 года назад
You probably won’t find many Wi-Fi buttons, since Wi-Fi, and good battery life don’t go well together, hence why a hub is usually required, since a Hub can use Zigbee for example to communicate with child devices, which will use less battery as a result. If you are a Samsung user, maybe a Smartthings hub (from Aeotec), and a Smartthings button, and any decent Zigbee bulbs would be worth a try?

A bit off topic, but I have a number of Hue bulbs on my HomeKit network. I frequently can not use them as they show “updating”. This could be a number of issues. If the hue bulbs are connected to a hue bridge and that bridge is connected to a router. Then the router could be overloaded. If they are connected via Bluetooth, then it could be a Bluetooth range issue.

So with thread will everything work through the home app for the likes of firmware updates or will you need the manufacturers app still? Fascinating video Jon. Eve have always been at a disadvantage with hub less BLE only support historically, range and HomeKit not allowing automations triggered by their battery devices. Wonder if they have the Nordic wireless chipset. It looks like having Nordic and an Engineer from Apple on the board of directors has been very good for the Thread Alliance. Similar for Nanoleaf, they look to be releasing a whole lot of smart dimmer switches at CES in a few weeks that are part of their essentials line and look to be thread devices and those bulbs and LED Strips are amazing value. Hopefully the likes of Philips and Netatmo don't get left behind, you would imagine they should have some big announcements also for CES 2021.

@@HomeKitAuthority yeah definitely! In the process of moving house so I want as much of the gear to be thread! I’ll probably just have to wait for it all to come out, 1 big thing I want is something to control roller blinds like Soma but thread

The current Hue devices don’t have the required hardware for Thread built in. Maybe future generations of the Hue lights will support it. just as the latest lights have bluetooth and zigbee, there may be lights that have Zigbee and Thread.

@@remcoj6245 let’s see what they come out with! I agree it’ll probably be zigbee and thread for the new bulbs, just hope I don’t get new bulbs for the new house and have to change them all 😂

Yes agree, they need to make thread enabled bulbs. Very little value in making the hub thread as it defeats the object

Hey Jon, how does thread compare to zigbee ? Zigbee devices seem very responsive to me so far
@StuffAboutStuff
@StuffAboutStuff 3 года назад
They are. zigbee already serves this purpose very well (after 5 years of daily testing in my home) excepting that there is no ip address. i dont have any latency of any kind.
@HomeKitAuthority
@HomeKitAuthority 3 года назад
Zigbee does work really well, but it requires an hub to operate. Especially in HomeKit and multiple hubs for different manufacturers. Whereas thread does not require this and can work independently. You also don’t need zigbee as the transport layer at all if you use zigbee. Thread is a an alternative to zigbee and is part of the chip project as one of the wireless communication options
@StuffAboutStuff

@@HomeKitAuthority zigbee does not require a hub. Philips Hue goes through the hub since about 18 months ago - but most 3rd party zigbee hubs do not process all commands -they are an agent for configuration fo the devices and for time scheduling and logic. The zigbee standard defines how lamps store scenes in them and the switches tell the lamp to go to scene X directly. Hue used to work like this but they changed it.

I've just read up a bit more on it - You might - in future be able to flash your zigbee devices to thread and use the same wireless mesh transport ayer to transmit the commands. But until you have done that - thread support will likely be through hub interfaces.

@@StuffAboutStuff so how does it connect to HomeKit? Zigbee needs a bridge to talk to HomeKit Hue is more than 18 months, I have had them for 2 years or more and needed an hub for HomeKit.

Do you know if Philips Hue lights will support Thread?

Not the current hardware, but future hardware may support it

Love your channel mate. I’m not the most it savvy guy but what is the difference between thread and mesh? I’ve just got the TP Link M5.

I’m loving the future of the Thread promise four HomeKit. Thread is the hardware version of BitTorrent. Good to see Apple finally getting with mesh technology. Now they need to implement native BitTorrent technology as part of their platforms and put podcast on BitTorrent and WebTorrent distribution.

I wonder what the limits of thread are? How many devices can be daisy chained and then what is the latency like at those limits?
