54 years of age - Engineer & heavy metal rocker - drummer, guitarist, base player here got my own studio write record my own stuff - GOOD GOD came across this device I'm about to sell all my stuff and get a bunch of these -FOUND this in another video came here NEVER HEARD OF IT till 30 Min ago - MOST BEAUTIFUL melodic & precussive thing I've ever seen and Heard on the planet! THANK YOU for sharing!
Ha ha that's great !! I know I actually did sell a whole bunch of electronic synths etc to get the Rav, Guda, and the Zenko!! So I totally know how you feel Glad you found my video ! And I do hope you are able to get some of these instruments you will love them I actually got another cool one since the video I unbox it too However the Ravs are still my favorite :)
@@abbiebeast if you are on Facebook I have a group called Rav Vast Music Group and there you will find tons of info. Or you can go to their website Ravvast.com (i believe if you Google it then it comes up and make sure you gondorect as that's the most cost effective or you can find second hand on different sites ) good luck Hope you can get it
Awe thanks. Yeah it’s amazing how they ate all the same type of instrument in a way but some sound completely different in beautiful way !! Thanks for watching And commenting ! 😎
This is such an awesome and helpful video. I've been looking at handpans and tongue drums for about 2 years now trying to fight the right one and this definitely helps. The rav definitely is top on my list but this video put the guda mini up there also.
Oh I’m so glad that you found it helpful !! You can’t go wrong with either of those for sure !! Good luck and I hope you get one soon and get years of enjoyment !!
Maria!! Hey there I went through a bunch of your videos and just saw this one come up on my feed! Nice job! I also love your Tongue drum videos - I actually just got one for Christmas - such a relaxing instrument to play. I hope you have an awesome day keep it up!!
Oh that’s great. So happy to hear you enjoy the various different musical interests I have. I know I probably should have made separate channels because I noticed that sometimes folks subscribe to my channel for one reason but if I get on a different musical kick they are history. But it is what it is as they say and now with over 600 videos I’m just gonna keep it the same. Thanks for watching and commenting and enjoy your tongue drum. They are so relaxing.
That Rav is just wicked. I’ve got a Vibedrum and a Freezbee so I suppose a Rav would be the natural next step for me. Honestly though some of those lower priced models are impressive. What a great resource for folks buying their first drum.
Awe thanks so much. And yes I agree about the Rav. It has a sound unlike any other I own. Although as you said many others really are great. I meant to tell you I got my Vibe drum back tonight. So happy with it now !! Thank you for suggesting that I contact Vern!!❤️
Hi sorry I’m not an affiliate. And some can’t be purchased on Amazon that I know of. Just type the name of the drum in the Amazon search bar and it they have it then it will come up. Thanks for watching and hope that helps
Such a wonderful comparison of tongue drums !!! Thanks 🙏 🎶🥁… currently I have the same Idiopan 14” as well in pearl and exploring tuning to another scale … working on getting a Rav vast 2 B Celtic minor from the original website … they are doing a 20% discount on Black Friday starting 11/19/2021 9pm pacific time :) happy drumming 😀😀😀🎶🥁💪
The Rav Vast G Pygmy gives me the right pleasing vibes regarding the notes it has, which opens up for more melodic playing! ✝ More musically inspiring possibilities, so to speak! 🤗 ❤ 😊
I am on the fence between a Rav Vast B Kurd and Nova Pan D Kurd. The Rav is from Russia, and writing this in winter 2022, I don't know what the maker's views are and he might not be able to state them safely, so I am a little hesitant right now. The Nova Pan drums is less "articulate" to me, and I also wish it was pitched lower, say, B, as the upper couple notes are a little pinched. My guess is that different mallets or even gloves might give me the more articulated sound I want, though.
Hi there thanks so much for your kind comments. I think both drums you mention are great. I only have the Rav not the Nova but have heard good things about them. As far as Russia etc. I know the maker did a video that said they no way condone what is happening and in fact find it appealing. They said they are still shipping etc but I understand your concern Good luck
@@MariaCalfaDePaul Wow, thank you for that. I am glad I said something. That gives me MUCH more confidence. I actually did look to find a video, but maybe didn't look in the right place.
Hi Maria. I miss working with you. Thanks for clarifying the different steel tongue drums. Another reviewer was completely against drums from China. I was too because of misleading ads for other items I purchased online (Specifically from a company called Justen trading Ltd). But your review changed my mind.
Thanks for sharing this. You play well. I just got a Horse in C key. I need to say I love it. I learned Scarborough Fair. Also I play bluegrass Tennessee Waltz.
Thank you sharing. All of your sound good. I’ve been drooling over handpans but can’t afford one yet. So glad to know there are cheaper options that sound nice as well.
Thanks so much. And yes handpans are more but now there are makers creating them for much less. I just got an Aura Handpan for under 1500 and he had beginner one for $875. And they sound amazing. I’ll try to link to my video
@@MariaCalfaDePaul No problem, I really meant it though. I just felt it:) I feel some of the suffering you've gone through as well. Solidarity my friend. Keep doing what you love, this video was also really helpful and useful.
The Zenko drum reminds me of a video I used to watch as a child: there was an episode of Rainbow where they were singing that song that goes "oranges and lemons said the bells of St. Clemens..." It's not the same scale at all just the sound of the drum makes me think of it
@@MariaCalfaDePaul Yes, the larger "fluffy" ones. My favorite of the Rav Vast set are the grey ones, the softest. I live in an apartment (senior, no less) and am mindful of my closest neighbor. I can only hope that she may actually enjoy the lovely tones if they ever do reach her ears. I am enchanted with these beautiful instruments!
@@toni2606 oh I believe they would enjoy them. I have had my neighbors comment too. They are like wind chimes ! I hope you can get them. I can’t find the link so I probably bought them from another source but let me check
I've seen some on Amazon under $100. Sound for 35 some for 80 and 7400. With those tongue drums be pretty good? I am very new to the tongue drum I've gained interest in it because I like the way it sounds and I really like ambient music for devotional time add meditation they say it's not hard to play so I'm interested in trying to make my own ambient music.
If you havent heard Daniele Rebaudo yet, then copy and paste this two ----> Daniele Rebaudo - Across the Infinity [OFFICIAL VIDEO] ----> ARIA PURA - Daniele Rebaudo (Studio version) If I remember it right, He is playing on a Rav Vast G Pygmy, and his playing is so beautifully touching! ✝
yes I have the smallest one in D akebono and I do like it. To tell you the truth I forgot I had it because it's in a closet. I will have to do another video with some of the others I have now..Thanks for watching!
Escolhi o meu "handpan", depois de ter visto você tocar esse menor azul, deve ser de 10 polegadas e 8 notas. Espero ter feito uma boa escolha. Obrigado pelos seus comentários ,me ajudaram muito.
Hi thanks so much for watching and commenting I love the Guda too and the scale is called A Equinox Hope that helps and also if you look in my playlists there is one for tongue drums and you can hear more of each of them :) Thanks again
Was watching this video and there seems to be some confusion as to what is stainless steel and what is not...also a bit on what stays in tune and what does not. Stainless Steel is non-ferrous thus magnets don't work on stainless...so if the drum is regular steel a magnet sticks to it...if it is stainless it does not. Second...the drums made of thin regular steel will go out of tune over a period of time as everytime you strike the note it stresses the steel across the bottom of the note and since regular steel has a lower tensile strength than Stainless over time it will go out of tune...always low...that is it will decrease in frequency....just FYI...vernon
Ah that's great to know. I guess when these cheaper drums are advertised they just put out "stainless steel" as a blanket statement. And yes funny thing I noticed is that some of them are not magnetic. Actually I think in this bunch one the 13 inch green one didn't work. And that is also interesting about the tuning. I have noticed that my Rav has stayed pretty spot on and I've had them over 4 years. Same with the Zenko and the Guda pretty accurate. The idiopan is strictly tuned with magnets and the two Hluru I have no clue about However I don't own the big purple one any more so I don't know what will happen over time. That's very good info to have. Thank you. The one thing that I do like about the Hluru drums is that they sound way way better than some of the Chinese ones that I have played and I think if it like my first guitar. It was a very difficult to play Yamaha made in Japan actually (as was the case in the mid 1970's ) and my dad got it free with trading in his cigar bands (thank God he quit smoking in his 40's or he would never have lived to 94) anyway it was an awful guitar but my point is that it sparked an interest that has become a lifelong obsession that I never would have been able to spark otherwise as money was tight. So in actuality these less expensive drums can lead to the more beautiful drums such as yours. Oh by the way I recorded this video a month before I got my vibe drum or it would have been named as one of My favorites lol. I only recently released it because after Bailey died it took me some time to get motivated. 💔 Thanks for the clarification. And one day I hope to add a mini vibe :)
@@Tokoyamishadow This is true...but these grades are not common and tend to be fairly expensive. I don't think you would see anyone using them to make steel tongue drums...although you just never know
No you can get a pretty nice sounding drum for that or under. I mean they may be one of the mass produced ones you get on Amazon but especially given that it’s for a child they can be really good. I like Hluru
Hi they are drums for marching band I think. They are wooden with a cottony feeling top. Ha ha that doesn't help much does it. I will look for the link on Amazon ! And put it here :)
I think they have a web site now. Also keep checking Amazon that’s where I initially bought it it wasn’t even advertised as a Hluru but it is. If I find it I will put the link here ! Thanks for watching
@@MariaCalfaDePaul I just found the website. Thank you for your timely response. For a small travel drum I really appreciate the tone of this drum in your video.
For starting out myself. I'm also hoping to find that last one in A akebono. I love the sound, and for its price point, it seems like an excellent one to begin with! Thanks. I'll look for the website
... I take it that the last one is Hluru's copper disc version? Though the one I see online has every note you mentioned but G4. The scale they named is "Japanese Folk Mode" A3, A4, B3, B4, C4, C5, E4, F4 (no G4). Is this not the same A akebono scale?
I would like to ask you, do you know the trade name for the Hluru D major? I want to buy it but Hluru has a couple of drums, which look like yours. Thanks in advance for your help 🙏
I’m so sorry I really don’t. I know they are all very similar looking but I bet if it’s a Hluru it will be great ! Good luck and sorry I couldn’t be of more assistance.
Funny that you ask me that because I’ve had the dominus for years and just this week I added a domina. The difference so far is the size and amount of tongue however I just read that you added pro. I think the pro has more tongues and the base key is different. The base key of the one I just got is G major and the dominus is a different Key Also my domina is tuned pentatonic. C pentatonic I hope that helps. I really like both and am enjoying the portable aspect of the domina since the dominus is much bigger and a lot heavier Good luck !!
@@MariaCalfaDePaul so the difference is just the amount of tongues? I’m looking for my first drum. I seem drawn to Idiopan and have found a few decent sales. But not sure which to go for. Lol I’m a beginner but everyone seems to say more tongues is good and bigger usually equals more sustain. And then there’s like nova and a few other brands I’m interested in too. Lol
@@Kittywolf13 oh I totally get it. I am very pleased with the sounds and that you can tune them. I don’t think you could go wrong with any of them. They are made really well ajd sound great. Not tanky. More bell like :)
Want to buy a Tongue Drum, but you mentioned magnets. I have a shunt in my head, so I can’t use anything magnetic as it might interfere with the shunt. Do they all have magnets in? Thanks.
Hi there. No there are many that do not have any magnets. For example the Guda drum and the Hluru and there are many others too so you should be good to go I pray you are okay 🙏 thanks for watching !!
Ahh well I'm Not quite sure but I have known of these scales since I started to play tongue drum about 4 years ago . :) they seem to be the names of choice in that world ! I have no idea where they came from though !! :) thanks for watching my video :)
@@MariaCalfaDePaul I learned something new, today! I'm planning on introducing world instruments to my Music classes this coming school year. Thanks for your video.
@@rodrigorodriguez8920 awesome that sounds like a class that I would enjoy ! Ps if you look at my playlists I have lots of different instruments including kalimbas and Native American flutes etc :) thanks again for watching !
It's funny before I started to play them I felt the same way I would call it "tanky" but I have changed my mind on these in particular I think especially with the mallets they can be quite soothing and beautiful I guess that's what makes the world go round I find that the ones like these are fun too because they have so many notes. I have begun to use the book of Chinese songs and I really like the way they sound with mallets When I have recorded the video I hope you can take a listen . Let me know what you think If you subscribe and hit the bell notification it will tell you when I have uploaded new videos Thanks so much for watching and commenting 😊
Sorry, but these are as good as real advanced instruments. They are often mass produced and generic and they sound too similar to each other. Not sure what’s special about the style of tongue drums specifically. Why not any and all percussion?
Hmm you didn't hear any difference between them? I find the Rav has probably the most special sound. If you can check out the other videos where I do a more extensive playing on each I think you are correct in that many are mass produced but at least 3 of the 7 here were not and in most are hand tuned. I'm not an expert I just love the way they sound and make me feel when I'm playing them I hope you can check some of my other videos out and perhaps you may change your mind a little However it's okay we are all entitled to our own opinion and I guess that's what makes the world go round :) thanks for taking the time to watch the whole video :)
@@dwarkamohni2442 In the video I tell the average cost of the ones I show and also where to buy them The more expensive ones are usually bought from the artisan who makes them but the others were purchased on Amazon It's a very personal decision so it's hard for be to tell you the exact one that is right for you but I have a whole playlist dedicated tongue drums if you want to look at them I will try and get you the link
