The bike example for torque trips me up every time. When I was a kid I kept my bike in the highest gear at all times because everything else felt like my legs were spinning and doing nothing. I never could never completely understand what value a low gear would have, or how my legs spinning twice as fast for the same output was supposed to help me up a hill.

I have a question to discuss; which came before, vector multiplication or physical quantities, I mean.. did we conclude the cross and dot products because this is what they mean in physics, OR we had them already and then we chose the dot for work and cross for torque etc... because this is what each product mean and we should use a specific type to have the physical meaning correct?! 🤔

A senior mechanic once told me that Tata trucks had immense horse power as a result it would perform well at lower torque which is favourable for hilly regions whereas Leyland Trucks were of low horse power compared to Tata trucks but it's torque aspect was excellent ,as a result it performed very well at a higher torque and could carry heavy load slow and steadily on a hilly road because of its excellent torque qualities, but what Leyland Trucks were lacking was the instant pick up which was very much existent in Tata Trucks powered by Mercedes Benz Engine, that is why Tata trucks were very much preferred in hilly sections, but Leyland trucks powered by British Leyland Engine still could perform quite well because of its superior torque qualities.

I think I get it fully but maybe not. Is the longer the wrench meaning more torque because the further away you get from the nut the less force per measurement needs to be applied. I imagined a scenario of me trying to turn a nut with a 70 ft pole or something and realized the further out I am the less force I need because the force is distributed into smaller pieces.

Good video (as usual) with good graphics (as usual). Why are gear (ratios) referred to as “low” and “high” (or “lower” and “higher”)? I know the answer, but this is almost never actually explained; the terms are just used as though everyone knows what they actually mean.
@bob-ny6kn
@bob-ny6kn 2 года назад
Maybe I am off topic, so just FYI; "Gears" actually mesh (teeth drive teeth). But, for bicycles, we have allowed into common lexicon the misnomer "gear" to mean cog or sprocket (chain drives teeth).
@brucefay5126
@brucefay5126 2 года назад
@@bob-ny6kn That’s an interesting point, but not what I am trying to get clarified.
@brucefay5126
@brucefay5126 2 года назад
@@bob-ny6kn So, whether actual gears or a sprocket-and-chain arrangement, why is a small gear/sprocket (input) driving a large gear/sprocket considered to be a “low(er)” gear ratio while the opposite is considered a “high(er)” gear ratio”, other than the obvious that in automotive transmission the gears are usually numbered 1 to x (where X is 3, 4, 5,or 6).
@bob-ny6kn
@bob-ny6kn 2 года назад
@@brucefay5126 Ah. The answer I do not have exactly but... if a smaller input gear drives a larger output gear at some ratio, let's say 4 turns for the input gear makes the output gear turn only once, you are in low/slow (high torque) gear. If the input gear is larger than the output gear, the output will rotate faster/higher... but you probably know that, and that didn't answer your queation.
@brucefay5126
@brucefay5126 2 года назад
@@bob-ny6kn Indeed. My question is why a slow(er) output (high(er) torque) ratio is referred to as “low” while a fast(er) output (low(er) torque) ratio is referred to as “high”? Why did the labels “low” and “high” get applied in this way? It seems to be something we just learn at some point and then carry on. A rose by any other name, I suppose.
