I took a tactical rifle 1 class at TDSA in southern Ontario, Canada. We covered stance, grip, one ups, mag dumps (only 5 rounds :'( ), target transitions and transitioning from standing to kneeling. Class 2 is supposed to be shooting around obstacles, while moving and rifle/pistol transitions. Class 3 is team drills. I'm planning to take them but pistol 1 is a pre-req for rifle 2. I can only get to the range once a month if I'm lucky, but I usually dry-fire practice a couple times a week. Id love to take some classes in the US in the future.

Man Texas I recently went for my first so called “training class” at a place in Florida ( I’m from the shit hole known as NYC 🤷🏻‍♂️ LoL and traveled for my class, flight, hotel) so it was an investment and quite frankly I was very disappointed with my performance, I went in with a very high level of excitement and came away with MEH... and feel the class was nothing special so I struggle to see the value in terms of cost for the class I took. I could’ve taken 2 classes at most other places, so to make sure my opinion/view is appropriate and fair I know I have to train at a different place for a thorough comparison. I’m guessing you liked your fighting pistol class and know it is legit despite your performance and would gladly go back, I definitely can NOT say the same at this point, but maybe I’ll see things differently after a second class elsewhere for said comparison. I hate to tell myself: I should’ve went somewhere else, or maybe it’s just me.

I had an issue in November where I had to qualify with a level 3 duty holster I had never used before. I was unfamiliar with how it retains the gun and how to defeat the retention. Since then I have been practicing with this holster and training under qualified instructors so I don’t have this issue again. They also identified that I wasn’t properly pressing the trigger and was snapping or jerking the trigger. Now I practice every chance I get. I even bought the same holster I was having trouble with. Had a great day at the range today too. Shot the face off my target. Like James says “Shoot the mother fucker in the face”. lol

James - I go to the range every week, at least once per week (sometimes twice). I go to Freedom Armory in Glen Rock PA. I shoot between 150 and 300 rounds per trip. I have done this for years. Happy to share range history if you doubt it. Prior to going to Freedom Armory I went to West York Sporting Goods range once per week but it is no longer open. Sometimes I go just to shoot, sometimes I go to practice. Even just "recreational shooting" yields benefits IF your technique is good to start with (i.e. muscle memory).

Yep this goes for competitive shooting too. Pay for a class for someone who can critique and help you figure out what works best for you, then spend the time dry firing to get the reps in to help minimize mistakes and build that muscle memory, eat, sleep repeat, then confirm with live fire on the range. JJ Racaza says sometimes he'' ll be lucky to get 500 rounds a month in actual live fire on the range because of his teaching schedule but he dry fires religiously. One of the top shooters in the world and arguably the best in the US.

I agree with this 100 percent but what I'm not understanding is why there is such a Binary thinking process here. Either you've had training and are completely prepared or you haven't and you're completely unprepared. Is it not a spectrum? Like wouldn't you agree instructors have different levels of legitimacy? Is someone who takes an NRA shooting class as trained as if they took fighting pistol? Of course not. Are they better than the average dudes wife who's never held a gun? Of course they are. I suck. I get that. I want to train too. I'm on board 100%. But I take average dudes shooting and I'm light-years ahead of them marksmanship wise. I would expect to come to fighting pistol and suck terribly. But the difference in something as small as marksmanship between myself and some average dude shooting in a completely static environment is real. Isn't the level of stress one of the determinations of your level of training too?

I agree that getting good training is the fastest way, but I would disagree it's the only way. It's the 21st century, all those drills they teach in classes aren't secrets. If you spend enough time watching shooting videos, pay attention and are smart about it, you can get 95% of the same stuff. Yeah it'll take more time, but you can. Look at Lucas Botkin, he's a great shooter and he admitted he's mostly self taught.
@coreysaxe3902
@coreysaxe3902 5 лет назад
TheKalkara131 there is a difference between shooting and fighting. A great shooter, to me means they are a marksman. Fighting with your gun (gun fight) requires marksmanship, tactics and most importantly MINDSET. training incorporates all of these things and I forgot to mention gear. Gear will work itself out when you find out your shit either works or doesn’t work while training.
@TheKalkara131
@TheKalkara131 5 лет назад
@@coreysaxe3902 I agree, but once again going to a training class doesn't magically make that happen. You have to want to and try to be better, go to the class with the right mindset. And my argument is if you already have that mindset, you can put it in the work elsewhere without going to a class.
