How to adjust or fix trimming mode on Shimano road shifters, so that the chain won't rub or make any noise. More about how to change gears on a road bike: • How To Change The Gear...
As a bicycle mechanic with over 20 years of experience. One of the best thing's that you can do is spend five minutes explaining how the trim work's to a customer, regardless if it's on a new bike or a bike that you have just serviced. It saves you so much time in the long run. Just always remember cables are going to stretch and frames do flex so chain rub is inevitable at times. 👍 cool video
I completely agree. Two weeks ago I just bought my first bike from canyon and didn't learn this anyone. I knew there was something subtle going on but I wasnt able to repeat it.
Had no idea what trimming was. Found this video by searching for what the front derailleur was doing. So glad I found this, great practical demonstration. I thought there was a problem with my bike, but it’s a feature!
First time I’ve heard about trimming. Just recently got a new bike with Shimano Sora and still getting used to the shifting. This video has taught me a lot. Thanks SickBiker and a big 👍.
Big thanks for the explanation. Just got my first road bike with Tiagra set and had no idea why it does this, now I know it suppose to be like that and what it's good for.
I literally only just found out my bike has a trim function today by accident! This video was super helpful in letting me know how to use it. Keep up the good work!
Never herd of "trimming" until this video. I thought it was just not shifting properly. I know know there is a reason, and it works. Thanks, great video.
I did not know that trimming was a thing, I recently got a road bike not even a week ago, and when I first shifted the fd I thought it originally had three gears because I had to crank it all the way to shift gears. Thank you this vid was very helpful
I've owned my bike for 3 weeks and adjusted the front derailleur twice to reduce rubbing. Never realised I could just click a button to make the rub go away
Thanks so much for introducing me to derailleur trimming. I never heard of it before and now I know that my shifters are actually working properly. 😂 🤪
This channel has always been My Go-To channel whenever I needed some information. Of all the channels the SickBiker is "the" direct to the point instructions.
Wow! I did not know about this. I bought my bike almost a year and just now learning about this very helpful function. Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you so much for this video, they way you explain and show with camera angles is very helpful. I just bought a road bike and learning how shifting works
I've been riding a flat bar road bike/Trek, but not with gold gears or chains. Any way I'm watching this video, very good, very rocket science to me. The bike shop said, here, go for a ride, well I had enough sense to know he's into selling bikes and not worrying about my safety, you SLICK BIKER are into keeping me from killing my self. The entire process of breaking and shifting gears are one big learning curve. The timing took a long time to adjust correctly on my FX 7.9 and I can see I'll need a large parking lot to learn or begin to learn all this. Thanks, your video is very good.
Bought some microShift shifter that has trimming. I was weirded out by this function coz I thought they sent the wrong parts. This video explained a lot why the shifter has more clicks than it should. Thank you.
Almost returned the bike. The first LBS didn't have a clue. The second one taught me trimming and I'm happy with the bike. Trimming should be taught in primary school ;)
Thank you for the video and explanation very clear, always had this issue but accidentally treaming and fixes the problem i thought something is wrong with my FD
Bought a bike with Shimano Tiagra shifter. I thought something wrong with the shifter. Thank you for the clear explaining on how it works. It is still very confusing to use. I have to think about it to trim left or trim right when shifting gears.
Thanks for your great video on trimming. BTW, about the small lever on Tiagra 4700 right shifter, is the shifting action as dampened as the Sora or crisp as the 105 R7000? Thanks
I bought a Canyon with 105, coming from MTB with Deore SLX, didn't have a clue about the trimming. On the 1st ride, I thought that the front derailleur is completely off, I was thinking to yell at Canyon for sending me a bike without proper front adjustment. But I have noticed the pattern when changing gears, then I checked online and found out that it had a name and it was known as "trimming". :-)
Congratulations I think you are the second video I've ever seen that even acknowledges that the trim positions exist, you join Arts Cyclery in a very select club. The Shimano manuals have all fron derailleur adjustment carried out in the trim positions, at least for 105 and above, never gets a mention in all those other videos..
SRAM mustn't be trimmed to work properly, right? I got my new bike this weekend and thought it's impossible to set it up, now I know what I did wrong... Thanks!
Great detailed video! thanks a lot for sharing. look, for the cheapest ones (like Claris), is it possible to add barrels or something that work like, in order to fine tune the cable tension? i had a Tourney that im upgrading and its a pain to fine tune the cable tension by pulling and screwing bit by bit...thanks
I just purchased Shimano claris shifters, with a sora front derailleur. Do the claris shifters have trim? I will I not have to worry with my 2x8 system?
Excellent explnation. So, that means that one do can use the entire combination between chainrings and cassete and no like some people say(that you cant combine small chainring with smaller gear in the cassete).
I don’t believe he is saying that crossing chaining is ok (it will cause problems). I think he is giving good information on how use Shimano STI to adjust your front derailleur.
I have the same exactly gear and I didn’t know it do that I’m pretty sure not working on nine And recently I ruined the gear I Was adjusting the gear as it got poor shifting but I thing I overturned the barrel cable so the rear shifter become no changing gears anymore I feel it like stuck won’t move I released the cable and put it on again but I didn’t know hoe to adjust it If any one know what happening would be appraciated Thanks good video
So it is normal that the chain is rubbing if you don`t trimm when on the lowest gears (small chain ring - largest sprocket)? I thought trimming is only necessary when the chain is crossing (small chainring-small sprocket and large chainring-large sprockets.
I've been riding my road bike for over two years didn't know. Been riding road bikes since 2010 and had no idea. Well tbh the first few bikes didn't have sti. The last two/three since 2014 should have figured it out
What if the derailleur doesn’t move left (From big to small) when trimming? Mine just got a tune up and the trimming works when I need space to the right but not to the left.
Thanks for this video which shows how the trim function works. Please can you also make a video with a clear explanation of how to adjust and fine-tune the trim function with the correct step-by-step plan for this?
let's be clear. if you need to use the trim that means you are crossing the chain. so, the thing is, when you hit the derailleur cage, that means it's time to change the ring. the trim is there only to force the cross chain. which you shouldn't. small ring = top half cassette / mid ring = entire cassette minus 2 cogs on each side / big ring = bottom half of the cassette. if you use your triple like this, you'll never need the trim feature. i'm so pissed at that SickClown.
@@JayB-lz6yd thank you for your comment and it is clear to me that it is not good to cycle with a crossed chain and for this reason i never do this. I know what the trim function is for and how to use it. What I would like to know ans what my qeustion is about is how you adjust it correctly with the adjusting screws and the cable tension of the front derailleur.
there are plenty of good videosout there. don't ask him that. he'll not do it correctly. all his videos are like this. always something wrong. you can't trust a dude like that.
Hi sick biker, can you talk more about alternative brands(Chinese brands) of groupsets that are unknown for the big public? I believe that bike industry is controlled by few companies. We as consumers need more diversity.
SickBiker could if he sponsored by them. With regards to other Chinese Brands like produce virtually identical in quality groupset parts to the big JAP and US companies, it would be down to trial and error and taking a risk to save money on overpriced premium bike components. If you are referring to the stuff on Ali Express website, always check the review with pics so you can see what the customer purchased and installed.
Great information but you shouldn't need to lube your cable housings is the only thing I would say. If you are thinking that's the problem, you need new ones. Adding lube to a cable is a short-term fix and will cause long-term problems.
My 105 trims perfect on the small ring but can’t ever seem to get the big ring to function properly. Big part of the problem I believe is my bike doesn’t have a barrel adjuster anywhere on the front shift cable. Making it very difficult to fine tune cable tension.
The wire tension on the front derailleur cable is much higher than that of the rear derailleur, I had to put a barrel adjuster for the front derailleur cable because I have internal cabling on the carbon frame (the rear derailleur cable seems to be fine without the adjuster). Also the barrel adjuster may compensate for the cable stretching over time.
If I am understanding this, then trimming is used to stop the chain from rubbing inside the cage. Am I right? Also, I am thinking that keeping my cadence steady is important to maintain endurance - not just getting into the higher gears as quickly as I can, and "toughing it out" to cover more distance. This would just wear me out quicker. Am I right on this one? I was told when I bought the bike to maintain 60 rpm, maybe because of my age (75). I am trying to prepare for a TT geared to my age, which is a few months away. All comments appreciated!
I have 2015 specialized Deverge, aluminum ,i maintain my bicycle very well, and seem to always have cable issues, I am always conscientious about cleaning and washing . I've tried different cables and lubes, , these internal cable routing seem to cause problem, ,,I've used expensive and cheaper cable/Housing, again with different lubes but always cimes back,
The trim did not work on the low ring on my bike after lbs replaced the cable and I did also not have loud enough click when trimming. I found out that LBS did not set the low limit screw properly after using to get correct cable tension so it was rubbing on the low/low gear. Well I don't blame the lbs and the mechanics everyone at the store needs to work fast so they can fix as many bikes as possible so small errors like that can happen.
What did you end up doing? I'm facing the exact same problem after having the workshop replace a cable. Now it's rubbing on the four largest cogs while in small chainring and also trim is not working.
