Understanding by Design (UbD) is a framework for improving student achievement. Emphasising the teacher's critical role as a designer of student learning, UbD™ works within the standards-driven curriculum to help teachers clarify learning goals, devise revealing assessments of student understanding, and craft effective and engaging learning activities.

The highlight of this video to me is that the designer advises teachers and school leaders to " think big", "start small", and " go for an early win". As any other teaching strategy, it is a good idea to try it, revise the results of implementation, and try to improve it. In my opinion, the essence of Understanding by Design is that it allows the students to build up concepts to later on be able to use them or implement them in real life scenarios. To finalize, the concept of backwards design can be very impactful because it establishes a goal and the different pathways to achieve it.

This is a great way to clarify what UbD is. Backwards design is one of the key ways I was taught to teach while in college. I now feel like I have a deeper understanding of it. Starting small and then developing the larger ideas. I love that idea!

I really appreciate how articulate and calmly you explain this process, I am inspired to keep this at the forefront of my curriculum design, thank you.

I had never heard the term "UbD" until I watched this video, this helped introduce me to this concept.

This informational video helped me to understand the big ideas, components, and steps to UbD. I now have a deeper understand of the UbD process and the importance of having the understanding of the framework to ensure that our activities are rigorous and engaging for our students and appealing to our colleagues.

It is amazing how educators can forget the big ideas. I love that this concept has tangible resources for teachers to use and remind teachers that although there is a lot of content, it is important to ask those all-important questions: Do students truly understand and can they teach it and are teachers starting with the end in mind? Can't wait to use this more in depth.

It took such along time to understand what is a ubd,yet when I did it seem an effective way to teach yet it require a long time for planning and for teaching with infinite result that the students will be ablr to transfer learned concept ,skills into new life situation and when they do who would be there to assess them and how my evaluation would be

Most college students are adults, not "kids," but otherwise, I don't think of myself as teaching content anymore--anyone can google almost anything. Instead, what do you do with the information you find?

Understanding and Comprehension are two concepts closely linked to communication. ... "Understand" is to perceive the meaning of something, even if it is not part of comprehension, while "Comprehension" is to make what is understood and assume it, which allows you to act in a coherent and consistent way with it.

I liken Understanding and Transfer to working on a car. I can fix my wife's Ford, but can I take what I Understand about how car engines work (or a particular component of the engine works) and Transfer that knowledge to helping me repair my Honda? I think that example does an okay job of helping to comprehend the way Understanding and Transfer mesh together. Feel free to argue as I want to better understand these concepts.

I appreciate the video and there are some valid points to take away. How can you as a teacher devalue or profession once again by saying that we should volunteer our time.
@MegaRonaldo64
@MegaRonaldo64 3 года назад
I do not think he means literally 'volunteer your time'. I understood it to mean, do not mandate it in a school, rather ask for teachers to volunteer to engage with and utilise the UBD process to redevelop their subjects. Anyway that was my understanding, though I take your point that teachers are very oversubscribed with extra work.

I was disappointed that there is really nothing about what UbD is in this video, except that it is apparently related to backwards design and that it is not covering textbook material from front to back. Apart from that, the author doesn't describe it.

Education is not transference. It is mediation, application, comprehension. More than understanding a subject, a student needs comprehension. Thus the application of what he has learned in class. Understanding is only a mental process.

I find it amazing that he is talking about understanding in education, and i don't understand anything he said (or better I don't understand how what he is saying is anything different from what any educator has been doing for the past 100 years).

Wouldn't application involve transference? It seems like it should.
