Variable Annuity is used for supplement retirement income, addressing longevity risk. There are two parts that go into Variable Annuity, first being the Accumulation Period where units are earned, and death benefits exist. Next is the Annuitization period where annuity units are fixed and value will change per unit, also a person will receive distributions monthly based on the portfolio performance. The money varies based on the annuity length. With Tax Perspective, annuities are after tax contributions. Pretax variable annuities are known as a 403b plan, or TSA. (ex: cousin of the 401k).
