I cant believe I've had to wait five years for this course, now ill have to dig up my old project. Excellent guys really grateful I thought no one cared about these legacy ECUs

That is a GREAT episode. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Still so much that we can cover with James, we'll have to get him back at some stage for another podcast if he has time - Taz.

Intriguing. I've been aware of what WinOLS is and what it does for at least 10 years at this point. Never tried it because I can't envision how a regular enthusiast could do anything useful with it. I could certainly be wrong... ...but I've done ECU calibration for two major automobile manufacturers. I'm intimately familiar with the binary, the hexadecimal, the binary (.s19) and the "damos" (.A2L) file that come together during a flash to provide the actual calibration. When I left my last calibration job in 2015, our ECU had over 150,000 calibrateables. Parsing through all that junk, theorizing what is what, and then testing changes to confirm/deny those theories seems like an untenable and highly daunting task - it was hard enough to tune everything to work right when I *HAD* the definition file and a department full of other calibration engineers to ask questions. Maybe I'm just dumb... ...but also, I lost count of how many times aftermarket tuners tried to bribe me into sharing the intellectual property that are the .A2L/damos/definition files that hold the keys to the kingdom. My point is that if WinOLS was a reasonably easy thing to use to unlock the kingdom - why were so many tuners offering me so much money to steal it from my employer and sell to them? Not poo-pooing WinOLS - perhaps it's just (way, way, way) beyond my pay grade.

Good post mate I'd say you're bang on..... Without a comprehensive definition file at best you'd do a very basic job tuning any car

there are a lot of a2l files floating around, from guys like you, so to speak. also, its worth mentioning that is not only a2l that is important, yes you may have all the maps defined but you still need to know how the logic behind all of that works, funktionsrahmen or "function and datasheet" or "fr" for short was something that you had acess to check how the hell does that think actually work. there are a lot of other intricacies, like for instance, you may have acess to all the variables, probably 10000+, but normal diagnostic only give you a few, and for tunning you need to have acess to those 10000+, that's another rabit hole all together.

its very useful for enthusiasts which can't afford to pay someone else to do maybe just a refinement or a a relatively simple change. like turning a fault code on or off for testing purposes... yes you need definition files, luckly many people are sharing them to help each other. I won't get into the legality of it. you're not gonna get lost in 100k tables if you just use the search function and know what to search. plenty of forums with members giving these precious infos out

@@Nebbia_affaraccimiei What forums and resources have lots of people sharing good intel on hex addresses and engineering units for various features? NOT being a dick here, I'm genuinely curious. I know the Subaru and Mitsubishi communities share intel, but I thought VW, BMW and Audi intel was really hard to come by. Not much need for bootstrapping definitions with the American makes - they're all quite well supported via HP tuners. For last few years, I've been playing with an IS300 - there is absolutely zero support for reflashing/editing those... I plopped a Link G4x in there and called it good.

The question I have is if it is worth learning and using WinOLS today? By the level of complexity and the way the new ECU is going and the other option to tune an ECU in the market.
@Nebbia_affaraccimiei
@Nebbia_affaraccimiei Год назад
solely depends on what type of ecu u are dealing with. and if you're passionate about investing the needed time. not "worth" as in economically worth.
@VizziMoto
@VizziMoto Год назад
WinOLS is amazing, but you must have a Damos file for whatever ECU you are making changes too.
@hpa101
@hpa101 Год назад
Many of those fresh to WinOLS also have formed the impression that tuning a factory ECU without this information is impossible, which fortunately isn't ALWAYS the case. Andre does address this in the course as well and we'll work to get some other content out around that too in general since it can be a stumbling block 🤘 This is also a service HPA is looking to offer soon for those that need it, but I would certainly do the course before buying anything else (people tend to try buy the tools and THEN get the knowledge on how to use them but the other way around is better) - Taz.

What are the possibilities of using some of the new ai technologies that have become popular and accessible to help search for maps. In my case I’d like to create a definition for an automatic transmission ecu which are quite hard to come by, but the standard transmission variant has several defined xmls available online. I wonder if I can feed the ai the defined xmls to then search for undefined ones? I’m aware this software does this but what are the differences between something like chatgpt and regular pattern recognition
@GroovesAndLands
@GroovesAndLands Год назад
Neat idea; seems plausible. I suspect you'd already need to have a solid understanding of the binary, the hex and core functionality to help guide the AI on its search. Perhaps you could implement the AI as a HIL-system (Hardware-In-the-Loop) to actually test its theories on what functions do what...

@@GroovesAndLands I will have to look into the things you mentioned as well as traditional defining methods because I have a decent grasp of concept but when it comes to actually knowing how to do things I am extremely unexperienced. I find it hard to force myself to really sit down for a couple hours a day to to read books or watch courses on things like coding and electrical engineering but maybe one day ill really dig into it and get somewhere. The topic interests me a lot and I could benefit from learning it but the nature of it does not agree with my brain, but from what I've heard even professional software engineers feel that way sometimes haha
