ERRATUM (06/15/2020): I just realized: the picture at 37:55 is not Robert W. Funk the famous biblical scholar, but rather Robert B. Funk the chemical engineer. Whoops! How embarrassing. (For me, not Robert W.: since I think even he would have to admit Robert B. is the more photogenic of the pair.) There is a picture of the correct Funk online here. www.westarinstitute.org/membe...
(01/09/2021): I was just trying to find something in this video and gaped in disbelief as I heard myself saying that "'catena' is the Greek word for 'chain.'" No it's not!! It's the Latin word for 'chain.' What the ham, I knew that. Not sure what happened there - my current theory is I was hacked by Russians.

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. The knowledge, the rhetoric (in a good sense), the directness: it is refreshing! I am a Systematic (i.e., Dogmatic and Fundamental) Theologian who believes that orthodox biblical scholarship is essential for authentic systematic theology. With a B.A., S.T.B., S.T.L., and S.T.D., my biggest regret has been a lack of decent scripture scholarship from which I could base my presentations. You're helping me discern where to aim my focus. Thank you!

Coming back to this video for a second time. I’m taking a Hebrew Bible course at a secular university, and am being fed the documentary hypothesis and/or all the textual and literary inconsistencies of the Bible in every lecture. It’s like the class is designed to destroy faith. I absolutely love your take on this. My spirit is refreshed. Thanks again for all the content and please make more on the subject of modern critical scholarship and how we in the Church ought to respond. Or more videos on anything. I don’t care. 😅

Gotta admit, the Catholic Study Bibles section is an entire oral epic with as much emotion as the Iliad. Going from the fascination and reverence to the Greek Catenas and the Haydock Bible to the dark ages of Jerome and the NAB to the small glimmer of hope with the Ignatius NT was just so great to hear. The anecdote from your TA friend at Notre Dame really made it personal. May God bless and illuminate all biblical scholars!

I’ll be honest, I came here looking into understanding the differences between more contemporary study bibles, I’m looking into RCIA and am for the first time trying to fully understand God and I stumbled into an in-depth, articulate, scholarly look at how to properly study scripture accompanied by several passionate experiences and testimonies and what I meant to have play as I did dishes ended up with me actively listening and taking notes for the entire hour and 39 minutes. Just wow. What wonderful, thoroughly vetted, emotionally charged yet highly logical work you put into this. Thank you so much.

@MrProsat

Word on Fire seems to be a bible for beginners, not a serious study bible. The Navarre Bible, when talking about the individual books, are pretty good. Not modernist, lots of Fathers and Saints chiming in. The Navarre Bibles in sets/series of several bible books are not as good, simply because there are fewer notes. If you can read Latin, these are nice.

The print is difficult for me to see, but it’s great. I’ve bern a fan of Scott Hahn for years....The scholarship is impeccable. The Ignatius Study Bible is lightyears ahead of the Catholic Study Bible.... That’s for sure. I just wish it were not so bug...The hardback is hard for small hands to manage.. but worth the effort

I love and respect your faithfulness to the scriptures. It seems from where I stand that almost the whole evangelical world (I’m a Protestant) has gone head long after the critical scholars who approach the scriptures as a corpse with a scalpel complete with clinical detachment. I try to study and learn the history of the pre critical church to hopefully discover where they went wrong. But I love the Holy Bible and I approach it as it is indeed the very words of God. God bless you for the reverence and faithfulness to the scripture that you advocate

Wow that was the most enjoyable and thought provoking essay on study Bibles I ever listened to. What an interesting gentleman, who reads off Hebrew, Greek, Latin, like how hum. I can only wish for such a brain. I honestly don't know what category I fall under. Most of my Christian theology has been Protestant based but as of late I been looking into Catholicism. Contrary to what I believed, Catholicism offers a way back to the church. I still have some hangups about some things but been going to Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation after 54 years. It's a journey for sure. So anyhows, I picked up The Ancient faith study Bible. It's pretty cool for a dailey reader. It's not Catholic as far as the more OT books but it's packed full of comments from the church fathers. Irenaeous, Origen, Justin Martyer, Clement, Jerome, and alot more. And next on my list is picking up the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible. I hoping it brings light to some of my questions. Happy Bible studies children of God 🤚for the Orchard reprint. Where do I order? 😉

I was brought up in the Catholic faith and lean towards their teachings over Protestantism, BUT I use the ESV Protestant study bible because the largest Christian denomination (Catholicism) have yet to put in the effort to supply such a great all in one study tool! Once again why the lack of effort?

Love this and the video "What Bible Should I Use?"! Actually ended up watching them because my Old Testament professor recommended them as optional videos for our class. A month into class and after watching your videos, I kind of became upset that I only have full NAB Bibles and am now not sure I can wait much longer for Ignatius Press to release the OT version of their study Bible so I can have a full RSV set. I usually would not want to listen to over an hour and a half of a video about Scripture for fun, but you made this video feel more like 20 minutes. I love your passion and desire to keep Scripture beautiful and authentic without falling into the trap of being unreasonable and to not compromise the fact that this is the inerrant revelation of God Himself. But I was wondering, in light on your comment about bishops needing to be more involved in Biblical scholarship, if you have had a chance to look into or have heard recommendations on the Word on Fire Bible. It is an RSVCE and they have been releasing it in chunks (they have released the Gospels in 2020 and just released Acts - Revelation this past January). I have only read Matthew - Luke so far, and it includes lots of homilies and essays by Bishop Robert Baron, some comments from Church Fathers and recent Catholic authors such as Flannery O'Connor, Thomas Merton, and GK Chesterton (I do wish there were more stuff from the Church Fathers in what I've read so far, but the stuff from the bishop is good). They literally say it isn't intended as a study Bible or a devotional - but an evangelical one, which I'm wondering if has been done before (I guess the Gospels themselves would have literally had this purpose) or is a more new or reemerged type of Bible.

Dom Orchard is my go-to for English Commentaries, with Msgr. Knox Three volume set on the Gospels and NT comes a very close second. The only issue I have with Dom Orchard, the print is so small, making my preference of holding an actual book in my hands and turning the pages less important when I can increase the text size online. I would like to see the commentary split into two volumes, as modern technology could scan and then accurately increase the font size and re-page the new two volume (theoretical) publication of this gem of truly Catholic yet modern without being modernist scholarship.

Thanks for your presentation on Catholic study bibles. I used the Jerusalem Bible since the mid 70's. I also own an NAB study bible, NIV study bible, Oxford Annotated Bible (with Apocrypha), Ignatius Study Bible (New Testament), and recently purchased the Word on Fire Bible - Gospels. I agree with you on the NAB and NIV study bibles. I found the Jerusalem Study Bible notes more faithful and to the point than the Ignatius Study Bible. I was disappointed the the Ignatius Study Bible. It seemed to be trying to address in the notes some argument that I wasn't privy to, sometimes mentioning all these views that aren't traditional before eventually (sometimes) getting to a more traditional viewpoint. The editor seems to like finding "moral" interpretations (along the lines of Origen), that aren't apparent in the text. I found it confusing that the cross-references were both at the bottom of the text and embedded in the notes. The concordance was a pleasant surprise. I prefer to look for the literal, historical, and "typical" interpretations from the early fathers. I guess it depends what you are looking for in a study bible. I bought my wife a Great Adventure Bible because she wanted to understand the timelines found in the Bible. I also bought my daughter a Didache Bible; it works well for her. I bought the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, 2 volumes on the Gospel of Matthew because I was looking for commentaries written by the Fathers. I was surprised that the commentaries they collected on the Lord's prayer excluded my 2 favorite commentaries by the Fathers: Peter Chrysologus (the most elegant) and Cyril of Jerusalem (concise but complete). I guess ultimately it is good to have multiple references to get a more complete understanding of the scriptures.

The ESV study bible is truly the gold standard of study bibles. I hope Scott Hahn finishes the old testament and makes a comple study bible that comes close to the ESV.

I am pretty much passionate about the Scriptures as well. Been doing expository preaching through the City of God Ministry we established here in Manila, Philippines, a couple of years ago in collaboration with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila.

What are the best ways to get/read the Church Fathers in book form? I know I can find most online, but I prefer physical copies if possible. Also, I'm looking for full texts rather than excerpts. The best I could find were the Hendrickson series (Anti & Post Nicene Fathers) but those seem to be out of print. Any additional recommendations would be most welcome. Thank you in advance.

@@ron_grimes Thank you! Are the texts referenced in the logos software from the fathers excerpts or do they present the full text?

When do the sessions at the feet of the Church Fathers begin? I'm here, sharpened pencil in hand (literally, metaphorically), ready for the patristic exegesis you so casually mentioned at 24:26.

Wanted to let you know I picked up the "Little Rock Study Bible" and found it disappointing on your faithfulness scale. It is beautifully laid out, though, with lots of pictures, maps, and helpful charts (even some to help you understand the documentary hypothesis and the similarities between the story of Noah and other myths of the ancient past!). And the paper, printing, and binding seem like they are all very good quality to me - it even lays flat in Genesis. But yeah... I think it scores somewhere between 0 and 1 on your faithfulness scale (it seems to basically punt on deutero-Paul). And the notes appear to just be the standard ones that come with the NAB. So I think I'm going to have to try to return it... Please, Ignatius press, release your complete study bible soon! 🙏 There is a desperate need for faithful study bibles in the Church right now apparently... 🙁 Would love for a re-release of Orchard or for someone to take that ESV study bible, add the missing deutero-cannonical books, and edit it for a Catholic audience. I don't know how many they would sell, but I would buy one for sure!
