You've asked for it, everybody! These are the BIGGEST mistakes I am seeing in small spaces, that no one knows how to fix! I'm sharing my DESIGNER HACKS for small spaces and I just KNOW you'll find some helpful info in this video!! 🔥🥰😍 Comment below and tell me about YOUR biggest mistake and how you'll fix it!! 👇🏻👇🏻
Can we talk about ceiling options that aren't flat and some permutation of white? I love bold ceilings, but there's a fine line between dramatic statement and gimmick.
@@951000jerome Purpose built furniture and generously sized aquariums. If you do a console with a top that's the same size as the tank, it won't look like you just plopped the tank onto a table and said, "Good enough." You can also build niches, or half walls to put the tanks on, so they seem less random. Sizing the tanks so that they're a feature rather than an afterthought is a good idea too. Like, if you're going to have an aquarium, it should be roughly the same size as, or larger than, a television that you would use in the same room. Dinky tanks, like the ones you see lining the walls of pet stores are always ugly. If you're going to do it, make it a feature.
Right. We have a queen sized waterbed and a chest of drawers in a 9x9 bedroom. If you need a queen sized bed and only have a 9x9 bedroom, I mean--that's it.
@@LisaHoltDesign We tried changing the orientation of our living room rug, which put a chair right at the edge. It gave the same impression--that the chair was in danger of falling of the edge of the raft!!
One thing I’ve found helpful: put an accent light in the farthest point of the room. It makes your eye look at that furthest-away corner, making the room feel larger. It can be a tiny lamp on an accent table or a picture lamp above some art.
Oooh J that's such a cool idea!! 🤩👏🏻👏🏻 Lighting has a HUGE impact on how big or small a space feels...truly one of the MOST important things to think about when designing any room!! 💙🌟 Thank you so much for sharing this little hack - I learn SO much in these comments!! 💚🥰
One of the reasons I keep my “Christmas” tree up in that corner. I like the light it gives off and every holiday has been represented. It’s one of those tall thin trees so it doesn’t take up much room behind that chair....will probably remove when the lights burn out.
Yes! That’s what I did to our house too. I imagined islands on various points of the room, as a sort of visual interest. A tall open shelf, my sofa, my work desk. I realized three of those form a triangle that just anchors the place. The power of three. I made sure to put the lights of my room only on those three places at varying heights. BOOM, it’s like magic.
Idk why do people that don't live in small spaves always think that people who do always have one and the same goal - make it look bigger? I've got a small space, it's dark, moody and oriental - my own lil opium den. I never feel so cosy visiting anyone else's white and cream spaces 🤷♀️
People have stuff, sometimes a lot of it. Keeping small space organized and decluttered was always a problem for me, especially in the clothes storage department or keeping kitchen worktop neat.. No matter how cosy or visually attractive the space was a priority for me was not to feel stressed and overwhelmed by stuff.
I totally see your point. Sometimes a little cozy nook is all you want in your space. I try to make my home office space feel larger, but I don't with my bedroom, because I want it to feel more snuggly.
Girl, trust when I say-I see you. I too have always had the living space aesthetic goal of my own little opium den that's dark and moody but like one for disillusioned 18th/19th century sailors in New England somewhere.
Lisa Holt is so cute with such a friendly, warm energy. Plus, she knows her stuff and she's very generous with the amount of information she shares. 👍You rock Lisa!😘
Aww M!! 💕🥰 You guys are just TOO good to me in these comments...this is so kind!!! 🤩🤩 I absolutely LOVE making these videos for you guys - I'm so glad you guys can feel the good vibes!! 😘 Thank you SO so much for leaving such a sweet comment - it really does mean the world!! 🌍🧡
The only disagreement I have is the bed. Platform beds are extremely popular but a bed lifted off the floor I have found to be best. Having real storage space that can be covered by a bed skirt or just a big comforter is fantastic!
You're totally right - it all depends on what works for you! 👏🏻💕 People have SUCH different preferences when it comes to storage solutions...definitely one of those things that comes down to individual preference!! 💙🌟 LOVE that you know exactly what you like - thank you so much for sharing your approach!! 💚🥰
OMG Michele!!! 🤣🤣 Maybe I should start talking about that in my videos... JK!!! 😂👏🏼 Thank you so much for watching and allowing me to be part of your Saturday morning!!! 🙈🥰❤️
I would love to see more “mistake” photos, and then “success” photos, not just one example of each. Pictures are much better than descriptions, and repeated photos of right and wrong decorating train our eyes to recognize right and wrong in our own house.😊
OMG this is great feedback!! 💚😍 I'm always looking for tips on how to make these videos more helpful for you guys...getting comments like these makes life SO much easier!!! 💕👏🏻 I will 100% jot this down! Thank you so much for the suggestion! 🥰🌟
Just had the pleasure to watch an older video... 🙋♀️ With your sharp aesthetics, i would love to see a 'wrong' room before and after.... Ideally using elements that are already there as a base for the change, as that is the way most of us "work" with our stuff at home.... And so often it is small changes that makes a great difference.... 💐
Oooh Zubda!! 💕👏🏻 Narrow and awkward spaces are TOTALLY on my list...we all have one or two of them!!! 😆🧡 Thank you SO much for the suggestion - I love hearing what you guys want more of on this channel! 🤩💙 And thank you SO much for watching! You guys rock!! 😘😘
@@LisaHoltDesign I live in Greater New Orleans. If you can include anything for shotgun-style homes, the Gulf Coast will thank you! Narrow and one after the other. Vistas don't always exist!!
When I purchased my small condo 12 years ago it was very Tuscan inspired with deep gold painted walls and rust doors and trim, pretty, but soon - pretty depressing! ( North facing northern home - so basically no light) Fortunately ( 😭😂😭) I had a flood from my neighbour above me so took the opportunity to paint everything bright white. Same colour, different finishes for trim & doors, walls and bath & kitchen. Wow. It feels like I doubled my space. Happened 2 years ago and it still feels fresh and open.
OMG Barbara!!! What a crazy story - I'm so glad it worked out!! 💚👏🏻 Switching up your color really does make a crazy difference...seems like it was meant to be!! 💜😆 Hopefully I can pass on one or two new tips in this vid...I think you're going to love it!! 🥰🌟
@@LisaHoltDesign The point I forgot to mention is that I discovered your channel when I needed help deciding what to do. You 🥰helped me figure out which direction I needed to take and I have been so thankful ever since. 🥰❤️👏
You pointed to a ceiling pendant as ambient lighting. I have always referred to ambient light more as mood lighting - lamps, sconces, floor lamps, all on dimmers. I never thought of it as overhead.
OMG Lynn!!! 😋😋 You are just TOO sweet - I've been trying to get back into my healthy habits after being all cooped up for a year!!! 💚😆 I am always SO amazed by all of the support you guys give me - thank you so much!!! 🥰 It really does mean the world!! 💕🌎
OMG yay Charlotte!! 🤩💕 That is my absolute FAVORITE thing to hear in these comments...I love helping you guys with your projects!! 🥰🥰 Thank you SO much for this super sweet comment, and congrats on your new place!! 😘💚
Did this with the outdoor rug I ordered. Our deck isn't huge, but I wanted a rug to define the sitting area, so picked up the west elm outdoor rug you mentioned in a previous video as it's close to the stain colour of the wood. This way it doesn't dominate or create sharp lines. The best analogy would be when I get a fade in my haircut to make it blend nicer along the sides.
C!! Love that analogy, and LOVE this approach!! 🤩👏🏻 Grouping your furniture for conversation but not breaking up your space...sounds like you NAILED it!! 💜😍 I LOVE hearing about you guys' projects...thank you so much for tuning in today!! 🥰💚
love her excitement in these videos u can tell she really loves what she does. thanks so much for the tips Lisa my new space is gonna have an upgrade !!💕
Jody!!! It's because of people like YOU that make me love what I dooo!!! 🥰 You guys make every so fun!! 😍💜 Thank you so much for this sweet comment, and CONGRATS on the new space!!! 🥳🙌🏼💖
What if you have small spaces that you don't feel the need to make look bigger? I love the small rooms in my house and prefer the cosy look rather than light and airy. I don't need the space to feel bigger. Bigger isn't always better. However I would still love design tips for these spaces.
Yay D!!! 🥳🥳 Love this tip about art...it definitely depends on the space!! 👏🏻💚 LOVE that you're thinking about all of those details...thank you so much for this sweet comment!!!! 🥰💕
Exactly what I needed! Speaking of mistakes, I wonder if you could share in a future video tips for resolving some design mistakes within a budget. For example, one bought the wrong colour for a sofa, scandi style ruined. What do we do now?
Oooh Claudia I love this!! 💕👏🏻 Quick fixes on a budget!! I'll 100% add this to my topic list...you guys have so many good ideas!! 📝🤓 Love that I could cover a topic you were wondering about...hope this was a useful vid!! 😘💜
Re-upholster, use blankets and horns to mask with oversized cushions, or get a fitted cover? i had this in an old rental and a bright green Klippan sofa that had to stay.... (!)
Another great video Lisa . ....love the introduction......ooooooooooooohhhhh........ and a “sneakadooo solution” .... “poof on the floor”... “Boom” you need to write a book on a new decor vocabulary it’s a great design language... thanks.... your a classy and practical designer. Love from Florida ☀️☀️☀️☀️
LOL Odette!! 💜😆 I really HAVE made up an entire new set of words over the years...we might need a glossary!! 😂😂 SO glad to hear that this was a helpful video - thank you so much for this SUPER sweet comment!! 😘💚

Aww Deborah!! That's ok - we missed you!! 💜😘 SO glad I could pass on a couple of useful tips...there's just SO much you can do to maximize a small space! 👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you SO much for always being such a fun part of my channel fam - you guys rock!! 🌟💙
OMG Izzy you're too sweet!!! 🥰💙 My editor put that together WAY back when we were just starting this channel...it's a throwback!! 😂🧡 Love that you guys still like it - thank you so much for supporting my channel!! 😘😘
OMG, Lisa! An idea maybe. A series where you revisit iconic shows from the 80s, 90s, early 00s, and discuss how the set homes would look like if they were designed today, but still keep their personalities. Examples of shows could be The Nanny, Friends, Golden Girls!!! I’m pretty sure the home in Golden Girls looked beautiful back in the day.
Angel!!! YES!!! 👏🏼 A TON of you guys actually suggested doing deep dives of other tv show sets when I did the Bridgerton video!! But doing a take on what they would look like now... What a FUN twist to it!!! 😝 Definitely on my list of video ideas!!! 😉📝 Thank you so much for the suggestion and for always supporting the channel!!! 😘🌟💖
OMG J!!! 🤯 These windows sound absolutely DREAMY - lucky you!! 💕🤩 SO cool that you live in a place where you can display them...this sounds like an absolutely delicious space!! 💙 Thanks so much for tuning in and supporting my channel this AM!! You guys are the BEST!!! 🥰🥰

Lisa I found that cute coffee table that you showed on your video! The one that opens up with two levels. It was on Costco online here in Canada! Woot woot! 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻
OMG CM what perfect timing!!! 🤩👏🏻 Those little apartments can be just SO cute...I know you're are going to NAIL it!!! 💜 SO excited to share these tips with you AND your daughter - let me know what you guys think!! 💚😘
Oooh Juliana!!! 💕👏🏻 Have you seen my video on Transitional design?? 🌟🌟 It's ALL about how to combine elements of modern design with beautiful traditional pieces - I think you might love it!!! 😋've got a wallpaper video in the works for you guys right now...stay tuned and let me know if the Transitional video helps!!! 🤩💙
I think the biggest mistake you can make is under sizing your furniture. It really does make the space feel titchy. I sometimes think more really is more.
I agree. Every time you sit down, you’re made to feel you’re in a doll house. While you don’t want big poofy overstuffed furniture, trim, tailored but large three-seater sofas and sectionals can still work very well, so long as you can get around the room, open windows and move about without smashing into things.
Your videos are my number one inspiration! I think I did well in my 45 sqmeters when it comes to vertical space, furniture, window decorations and definitely with lighting! I opted for a round carpet in my living room since it’s not possible for me to clearly separate lounging and dining space, so to avoid „floating coffee table” effect, I chose that. I have white wall panels on one navy wall in my bedroom but it was so beautiful I could not resist 🤷🏻♀️ But everything else in the room is either white or light gold, so that little navy accent is just adding the character I think :) But I think I’ll add a mirror somewhere in that room - that will definitely make this 9 square meters room bigger!
Ooooh Kat - I think you're 100% nailing it!!! 🤩🤩 This space sounds absolutely AMAZING...way to go!!! 💚👏🏻 I DEFINITELY think adding a mirror will just be the cherry on top - good luck, and let me know how it goes!!! 😘😘💕
Ya know, I'd love a vid about pesky issues like cable management. I noticed you said to paint the cables, but are there other recommendations? Also for things like hiding kitchen appliances, t.v., etc.
LOL Jerri!! You KNOW I love happy hour!! 👏🏻👏🏻 Bar cart time!! 🤩🍸 This is just SUCH a sweet comment - thank you for making my day with these kind words!! 💕🥰
Condo apartments are getting smaller and smaller, but furniture manufacturers are slow to follow the trend. I lived for years with a loveseat while dreaming of a couch I could stretch out on. I recently found a Canadian manufacturer that now makes a condo sized sofa, which is about midway between a two and three seater sofa, but having only one choice is limiting, although they do offer some options in firmness and leg and arm style, and fabric, of course. I still live without a coffee table though since I can’t find one narrow enough (about 12 in.) to fit the space. A sofa table, but coffee table height would be perfect ... I need a skill saw. I love your channel. Thanks a bunch for sharing your knowledge.
Oooh Dani what a find! 👏🏻👏🏻 I tottallly feel this...it would be SO much easier to find furniture in the right scale if companies were manufacturing more of it!! 💚😂 SO glad you found a solution that works for you, and so glad that these videos have been helpful!! 🌟🌟 I LOVE my channel fam - thank you so much for this sweet comment!! 💕🥰
Sara!!! 👏🏻🤩 SO glad I could cover a topic you love!! 💚 You guys asked for more small spaces tips...here's my answer!! 😆💕 I love hearing that I can help you guys with your real life design dilemmas...thank you so much for this super sweet comment!! 💙😘

Totally L!!! 💙👏🏻 Getting rid of those tiny rugs never hurts!! 😂😂 SO glad I could share a few of my favorite tips - thank you so much for coming out and supporting my channel this AM!! 😘💚
Lisa, I do love you, your energy and how generous you are sharing all that knowledge. However, one thing bugs me a bit. Where I live (central Stockholm, Sweden) a small space is not a bedroom where you can fit both a double bed and a daybed. You are considered lucky if you can fit a king size, 2 side tables and move around it 😃. I would love to see more ideas on how to make furniture work for multiple purposes. We will continue working from home well into fall here and most of us need to make do with what we have and can modify.
The custom Levolor Aluminum mini blinds we had put in our first house that are in off white matching the walls are still in good working condition. The ones on the sliding doors did have to be restrung. But you can still order parts for them. We have a wall of Windows and it is a pretty clean look with complete light and privacy control. It was a huge compromise between my husband and myself and I am glad we went with the Levolors. Husband wanted these crazy insulated mechanical roller shades that came down like a blanket wall over the windows that allowed no light control or privacy control. Up or down and no style. We had cats so curtains are impossible as they would scratch and climb them.
Thanks Lisa, I'm in a small flat so all the content is pretty much aimed at me. I recently changed my teal velvet curtains for floor length sheer white ones, thanks for the drapery video. I wasn't sure what it would be like against white walls but... I LOVE IT!!! Room looks so much brighter. Thanks for guiding me. Looking forward to the next leg of my journey 😍
Gail!!! OMG, that is so amazing to hear - I am SO GLAD that you were inspired by my drapery video to change up your curtains!!! 🤩🤩 Who knew curtains could make a HUGE impact in your space?!? 😆 I hope you are signed up for the Dezign Club because this won't be the last time I talk about small spaces tips!!! the Rugs Tip is the best tip. tiny rugs are good in entry ways to trip up your guests. or good in the kitchen to catch the over flow to the floor. or good outside your back door to wipe your feet before returning from the garden or balcony.
LOL Rix!!! 😆💜 Tiny rugs can definitely become a hazard, both to you AND to your style!! You have NO idea how often I see this issue in absolutely BEAUTIFUL spaces - such a simple fix!!! 💕😂 Anyways, no tiny rugs in MY channel fam - I know you guys can do so much better!! 😘😘
Kathy!!! You guys have been wanting another video on small spaces - and I delivered!!! 🙌🏼 SO happy you guys are loving the video - making my weekend reading ALL these positive comments!! 🙈🥰❤️ Thank you so much for watching and supporting the channel!!! 😘💜💕

I had to rewind the lighting segment five times because it’s my favorite 🤩. I have lived several small places over the years and proper lighting was always my Achilles heel - really needed these tips!
OMG Marnie!!! 💕 Lighting is SUCH a challenge, especially in small spaces!! You are NOT alone!! 💙😂 So glad I could pass on a few of my favorite tips...thank you SO much for joining me for another design brunch!! 😘😘

Hi Lisa! you said in another vid, you could use color for everything, the walls, ceilings, and floor. I'm looking at a deep plum, almost brown for a tiny bedroom, hall, and bathroom I want keep cooler. I don't want white or white-adjacent. Your channel is inforative and inspiring
I did everything you said in this video and i guess thats the reason why people are so shocked about my room. They always say it looks so much bigger and its only 7-8 square metres 🤣. I live with my parents and have the smallest bedroom. I have a bunkbed underneath that i have my sofa and i have a huge bookshelve with storage. Desk with storage etc. Big statement jute rug, white everything with pops of colour here and their and i removed my thicker curtains a few years ago bcs they made me feel like the space is super tiny. I have sheer ones and roll down black out blinds. 👌👌👌
Thanks Lisa for sharing the magic formula when hanging art. Now need the magic formula for how much wider than a table lamp at its widest a shade looks best at. Loved your small spaces tips, rugs and all.
LOL Kiim!! You have to be sneaky sometimes when it comes to those small spaces!! 😂💙 You guys know me and my made up words...can't stop, won't stop!!!! 😆🧡💕
We recently bought a bed that behind the bed head you can hide cushions and phones/books etc. so no need for side tables. It's perfect because all we can fit is our king bed and cot. 💚
OMG Tessa I love this!! 🤩💕 Talk about storage solutions - way to GO!! 👏🏻👏🏻 I'm so excited to hear how you guys handle your OWN small spaces...I learn sooooo much in these comments! 💚🥰Thank you so much for sharing, and thank you for tuning in this week!! 😘
You are crushing it! I have watched every video and love your work! This video JUMPED at me because I literally have the hardest room to solve for - maybe it's the covid isolation for a year, not sure - but trying to design my small space room has been impossible :( It's making me squirrely! sigh.

Love your ideas! Wish I could hire you to design a modern flat for me, move in ready Q1 2023! I don´t know what to to with it, designwise. It has high ceilings, that is great, and big windows, but only in one end of the living room, the kitchen is at the end, and has no windows. I will adopt your idea with the mirrors, maybe mirror tiles over the countertop. The 2 bed flat has a pretty standard size, 80 sq meters, the open livingroom/kitchen is around 45 sq meters. But newbuilds have no style, I need more inspiration of layers and making a newbuild homely! Dont really want to move you see, moving because of my work, guess I´ll be ripe to move - after commuting for a year and a half! 😅
Awww S this is so sweet!!! 💕 Making these videos feels like chatting with friends...I love my channel fam!! 😘😘 Thank you SO much for making my day with this super sweet comment - it really does mean the world!! 🥰🌍

Fiona!! I totally hear you!! 👏🏼 This video was just to help maximize the small space you have, as well as how to make your space feel BIGGER!! You can totally design your space the way that fits your fave style the BEST!! 🤗💜 And the use of mirrors in your space is an amazing way to help open that up with the darker colors involved! 🙌🏼 Thank you SO much for your input on this, I LOVE hearing what everyone has to say!!! 🥰❤️
One of the places that have a lack of space is senior apartments. You may not want to cook but many seniors must make their own food out of dietary concerns. Seniors cannot store items on shelves near the ceiling. Ladders are often an issue. Even taking your shower curtains down to wash can be an issue. People often ignore seniors and hope they will die sooner rather than later.
Color itself does not make a room smaller, neither does the lack of color make the room bigger. Color can mean cozy, my tiny dressing room and smaller bedroom are cozy with a deep navy and white contrast in trim and closets. At night the color kind of disappears. Lack of color is not always best:)
This is so true Sabin! If you seen my video on paint, I discussed the use of super deep colors in small spaces, they’re fabulous to make the walls and lines disappear as you know!👍🏻🤣❤️😘
I like your new intros that list the highlights; it lets me know what I’m in for and when to really perk up and listen - because I want all those tips! 🤗 Thanks for sharing.

I LOVE these tips! You are the funnest person to watch and you have such amazing advice! I do wonder if you have any ideas for small spaces that are rental...For example, the bathroom in my apartment is tiny and has some of the worst linoleum flooring you can find. 🤮 Do you have any pro tips for someone who wants their space to feel like home and not lose their security deposit?
OMG J me neither!!! 💜😂 Hanging out with you guys in the chat is SO fun...I can honestly say its the highlight of my week! 🥰🥰 You guys are going to LOVE this video...can't wait to hear what you think!! 💕😘😘

Dear Lisa, I have been watching your videos for quite a while now, and I get a lot of good ideas from them. In this video, at 3:44, you show a beautiful Mouille-Type (?) ceiling lamp. On the picture it looks blue, which I would go for, but I only find this kind of lamp in black. Could you tell me the name of this lamp or the manufacturer? Thank you so much in advance.
Awww Georgeanna that's my favorite thing to hear!!! 🥰💕 I'm always hoping you guys will find these videos useful...I'm all about helping you out with your projects!! 💚👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you SO much for making my day with this sweet comment - you guys rock!! 🤩💜
Let's all agree that the "oversized" bed criticism was not fair. If you have a cracker box you shouldn't have to also suffer through life in a twin bed. Also 6:03 WTH- lamps in front of art, I can't handle that. The rug advice blew my mind though.
My shins hurt just looking at that platform bed you showed and imagining myself trying to maneuver around it at night or half-asleep in the morning in ANY size room, let alone in a small one. Ouch!!! Are you kidding?
LOL Sue!!! 💕 I just can't stop making up words!! Do you think it'll catch on??? 😆😆 Maybe Merriam Webster will see this comment!! 😂😂 Thank you SO much for tuning in and supporting my channel this week - it really does mean the world!! 😘💚
Hey Lisa, do you have any advice on bedrooms / offices under sloping roofs on one side (sorry, not sure how to best translate this)? Love your tips and subscribed a while ago, but German houses are quite different (I'm one of your European subscribers)...
Thank you Lisa for this video :-) You say all the envelope should be the same colour. Is this true for the kitchen too ? Should my kitchen doors match the walls ? After all, it's going to be a good chunk of my space. Or maybe I shouldn't put doors and use shelves (and baskets for food's storage) ?
I have a small ledge across our front door. Found some art that looks wonderful. My husband actually found these. Hand carved musicians made in NOLA in Ashville,NC. If I new how to post a pic I would lol
As a lover of colour, I have one amendment, paint EVERYTHING the same colour. Walls, ceilings, trim, maybe even furniture....but then have a light floor. The size disappears. Using lighting to colour change those walls and adding mirrors and glass also helps that reflective quality. Just my opinion. *mischievous grin* 😏😁😘🥰
