People forget just how violent and how much an atmosphere of violence pervaded youth life during that time. I hate it when people look back only with rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia as if everything was “wonderful”.

You had something to be into in those days , I was a Skinhead with no racial intentions , It was a look I liked and the music reggae and ska , I loved Punk ,later I was a mod which was not that far away from the skinhead look . later I was a casual But looking back I loved so many different styles of dress and music . I hung around with people of both black and white decent colour was never chatted about we was friends and that was that. But the 80s gave you so many looks /fashions from Skinheads to mods to punks and goths , Rockers to rockabillies , Soulies to Northern soul , New wave and early indie to new romantics even a few Hippies . Music was our life and the 80s gave us every kind of sounds you can imagine I am not saying these where perfect times But I felt safer walking the streets back then than I would today at that age . Today there is nothing both fashion wise and music wise and someone would rather stick a blade into than mix with you.

I was a punk and right into Crass and all that sort of thing in the early 80s. Was very matey with all the Conflict lot cos they lived a bus ride away but was also very good mates with all our local skins and soulies (casuals) too. We were all just out to get pissed and have a good time. Some people liked one sort of fashion/music and other people liked other stuff. And everyone *I* knew was cool with that. I sort of miss that these days. All the kids look the same now, heads down zombiefied by their phones.

Fraid the so called 'mod revival' of 1980 was a phenomenon almost entirely manufactured by a youth hating media. All it basically involved was a few parka wearing young people from london's suburbs riding down to brighton on lambrettas on bank holiday weekend and kicking a few deck chairs over. Trust me by 1980, outside of a few towns in southern england like merton and woking, you would have struggled to find a mod or modette even if you looked for one
