Thanks to Edzard from Sheep Inc. for chatting with me about their wool. You can check out Sheep Inc. here: sheepinc.com/?... *
The sweater I'm wearing was gifted to me by Sheep Inc. it's lovely and I'm looking forward to wearing it a lot this fall and winter. If you are interested in their products please note that they do use unisex sizing so it can be a little tricky - I'd recommend either sticking to your size for a looser fit or sizing down for more fitted pieces.

Thank you for another very helpful and informative video! I love the in-depth discussion about finding solutions. For myself, I chose to ear wool products but primarily source them secondhand (garment or wool to knit something out of it) or I buy from sustainable brands offering recycled wool products. But I would love to know how to make sure wool is sourced ethically and sustainably from the start to maybe buy a garment like that or just for the whole industry and the costumers to have options... Because I think wool will be around and one of the better options for some kinds of garments and I hope there will be more transparency, knowledge, and brands out there that provide a good product for people, animals, and the planet.

So glad it's helpful! I know you knit, you should see if there's a local fibershed where you live and maybe some fiber farms you could visit. I've learned so much from visiting fiber farms :)

I would be interested in a follow up video which recommends North American brands who use ZQ certification if any exist or the next best. It doesn’t seem sustainable at all for people in North America to be getting wool from New Zealand. Also, I would like to see more information/ brands on actual wool yarn for knitting in North America.

This is such an interesting series! Can't wait to find out more! Wish I could wear second-hand wool and cashmere, but I can' stand the itch, wonder if I could do something about that. P.S. That shade of green looks amazing on you! :)
@MyGreenCloset
@MyGreenCloset 2 года назад
Does even cashmere make you itch? Often people who don't like the itch are fine with merino, cashmere, and/or alpaca. Cashmere and alpaca actually have a different fibre structure so the don't have the same roughness of regular wool.

Personally I’ve never seen sheep that weren’t harmed during the process. Often held down brutally and with cuts on their bodies… Wool is a huge industry in NZ but they are not native to the land and they can cause damage to the natural landscape. However, I don’t know of any superior natural materials for colder climates so it’s great that you’re having this discussion. But for me, driving past fields and fields of sheep farms in NZ and the cut down native bush is very depressing. Especially given its history.

If wool is not shaving sheep start to itching itself in branches and stones. I causing itself wounds that will be attack by a flies in no days, and because it's still half hidden by the wool probably wouldn't be noticed before the fly grub to start eating a flesh alive. During the shaving process have a vet tech who treat the cuts, at least it have to if the farmers follows the rules. Shaving of wool is not more stressful for one sheep, than grooming and nail clipping of dog. I don't want to be argumentative, and I'm not trying to change your mind, please don't read my message in negative light! I'm just providing a vet tech practice information, as I'm seeing your comment to collect likes without people to be objective, it's not personally for you @SagaJohanna .
@SagaJohanna
@SagaJohanna 2 года назад
@@alekfelis Not personally taken :) I understand where you're coming from, but the sheep I have seen have been brutally harmed, not just a little. Further, sheep that live naturally and aren't bred to produce an excess amount of wool live a very different life. I grew up on a farm and never have I ever seen an animal that scratched themselves until they bled.
@alekfelis
@alekfelis 2 года назад
@@SagaJohanna I totally understand you, unfortunately there always will have bad animal owners, as a bad children parents as well. The process definitely could be improved. I don't see why is not invested in machines which can't cut the skin similar to these for women's leg shaving. I'm not sure how experienced you are or maybe the climate is different, because sheep invaded by a fly larvae, because of scratches after they get wet after rain or if the unshaved wool gets too long and dirty, is a pretty common part of the vet tech internship and horrible picture that I'll never forget. Sheep are literally eaten alive.

@@alekfelisI’m gonna repeat what @sagajohanna said because it’s a very important part of the discussion : those sheeps are bred to produce a massive and unhealthy amount of wool. Wild sheeps don’t naturaly produce so much wool that they would need someone to shave them or else they would die… It seems very easy, though narrow, to think that it’s a service humans are giving to the animals, but without humans’ interference, we would never have come to this.

Wool is a great fiber for clothing as it regulates temperature well. However, with animal welfare in mind, if an older sheep were to be killed and during their last moments were in pain and emotionally distressed during the process, the humane philosophy the brand upholds between human and animal seem to contradict. I wonder if there are other small brands out there that do not send the sheep to a slaughterhouse. I have found recycled wool sweaters and duck fill jackets from the brand Patagonia (pricey investment). Could you do a future video about brands that carry recycled animal-based products? :)
@MyGreenCloset
@MyGreenCloset Год назад
Izzy Lane is the only brand I know of with a no-slaughter philosophy, otherwise there are some very small fibre producers with no-slaughter practices but you can usually only get yarn from them to knit your own garments. Regarding recycled wool, I have a brand roundup here: mygreencloset.com/recycled-wool-clothing/ :)

Definitely a no for me. I’d encourage you to think a bit more about the deeper meaning of some of your language when talking about these animals such as selling, humanely treating, aging out, etc. Try subbing humans in for sheep when discussing these things. Even if we treated humans in the best way possible wouldn’t we still call this slavery? If it’s not okay to do this to people, then why is it okay to do this to sheep? Don’t sheep want to live? Why do we bring them into existence simply to use/sell their wool? What makes that ethical? At the end of the day animals are here with us, not for us.
@mrvy

The sheep don’t have any natural predators in NZ so honestly it would just be a wasted resource to let them die in the mountain, and also very disruptive to the natural environment

I don't want to convince anybody to use wool, it's all up to you. I'm coming from a farm family, so I can't pretend to be objective. But could you ask yourself: Would you ask your cat's nail to be clipped, because will ruin your furniture? There is none health benefits in this, although the sheep shaving have. Do you feed your dog with canned food? That's right there is where the most of old sheep's meat going for, as humans use for cooking mostly lambs. Have you been in a situation to take a decision for your pets end? Did you choose to left them old and suffering? There isn't a wrong answer. But the mother society is way too judgmental to one ancient tradition. If there have more strict rules and control, so shepherds to follows the traditional way of small family farms, wool production can be fair and sustainable practice at many regions. And I don't mean people who are vegan to start use wool, for god sake no! I mean the others to collect more facts on which to based their opinion concretely about wool vs cotton and other fibers.
