What it’s like to watch a Total Solar Eclipse

The total solar eclipse from Madras, Oregon on August 21, 2017. As the moon passed in front of the sun turning day to night and revealing the sun's corona, apparently all I could think to say was 'Oh my goodness!'
This awe-inspiring phenomenon returned to the US on April 8, 2024, when total solar eclipse crossed North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
Special thanks to our Patreon supporters! Join the community to help us keep our videos free, forever: ve42.co/PatreonDE
Everyone says not to photograph your first solar eclipse and I think they might be right. I was focused on getting the exposure right for Bailey's beads and the diamond ring, plus making sure to get the corona and solar flares. This was a bit stressful but I'm delighted with the results.
This video originally included more info but since I'm uploading from Madras where the internet is sluggish, I cut out three minutes so the upload would happen before I had to leave for my flight.
Special thanks also to Dr. Teagan Wall for sharing this experience with me and Raquel Nuno for inspiring me to come to Oregon.

Here in the UK we had a total eclipse back in August 1999 (We are not due another for another 100 years apparently) where I live was just outside the path of totality, but I still managed to see almost all of the sun covered and the light turning to dusk. Slender Bunny Waiting for someone to comment this. I am a person that never cheers for anything but I have never seen something that moved me as much as what I saw. There is a group on RU-vid who goes around comment negative stuff as if they themselves are Jesus. These people usually insult other people by pretending they are above everyone else. I have seen so many in these eclipse videos, probably because they have no idea the true expirence yet they have seen pictures and thought they are experts. In short I really don't like this cinical croud of RU-vid.

Being in such a massive crowd takes away one another impressive part of the eclipse: the sound of silence. In 1999, my dad and I were in France. Noticing the clouds were ruining our experience,we jumped in the car and had a wild ride along small countryside roads to a location where the sun was still shining. Minutes before the total eclipse, we stopped the car in the middle of nowhere and jumped out of it. Those last minutes were unforgettable. As if nature surrendered for this phenomenon, all crickets, birds, dogs and other creatures - including the both us - became absolutely silent. That overwhelming sound of silence with the beauty of the eclipse and within the company of my dad is still one of the most precious memories in my mind.

I imagine there was more of a dramatic temperature drop out west were the air was drier.

The next two total solar eclipses will give you very little chance to see totality, as will the 3rd one unless you think millions of people will decide to travel to Antarctica. The 4th, 2024 one, will cross the most land than the last 3, giving millions the chance to witness it. We're talking about totality, not just any eclipse. I don't get why people are so butthurt about a country being excited for something that hasn't happened in nearly 100 years. The next one on 2024 will probably be viewed by more than the next 3 combined, if we're all still here. :3 America can be a shitty place, with shitty people, ruled by shitty "leaders", but don't generalize.

I saw it in the NC mountains. There is no equal to being in Totality and experiencing the moon fitting perfectly over the sun for a few minutes. No video or photo capture that event, and if you can, make the next available event. I was fortunate enough to go to Wyoming to see the Solar Eclipse back in 2017. One of the most surreal experiences of my entire life…. We camped and the campground was beautiful. We hiked to the top of the plateau and below was a valley and river, with wild life. In a moment, the skies turned purple all around me, the birds became silent as I saw one soar through valley. And everything around me was so still and just beautiful… It’s like everyone and everything, including nature, the water, the wildlife, trees and the ground took the time to stand amazed at the event. It was truly such an emotional experience

knowing how something works vs. experiencing it yourself are two totally different things. It's viewing it with your own two eyes....something that you don't see every day or maybe something you might only see once in your life is a humbling experience for some, myself included

Total solar eclipse is really weird thing. You have to experience it to understand the hype. We had one in Finland 22. of July 1990. It's really hard to describe. It's day at first and then suddenly night. One second the birds are singing and you have all the sounds then darkness comes and everything stops. Total silence. It's really scary. I think everyone should experience it once in their lifetime. It's a perfectly good reason to travel across the globe.

Kai Marcad I would love to see it once as well but I think there's other phenomenons that intrigue me even more. I'm much more happy to have seen an aurora borealis (you as a finn will understand) at least once in my life.

Was between Idaho City and Lowman with my Nephew on top a mountain, the switch back below the mountain we were on, a group of people had parked to watch it broke the absolute silence playing some music and you could hear them whooping about 30 seconds into totality... just before it and as it started there was an eerie dead silence. Some annoying grouse and/or pheasants were making some funny noises moments before as well as some cute chipmunks. Then absolute silence and rapid coolness and breezes.

I live in Canada, but I'm obsessed with space, and it's been like the number one thing on my bucket list to see a solar eclipse so my dad and I took a road trip all the way down to Tennessee. I can't even explain how incredible it was, I remember specifically at the moment it happened, the entire crowd I was with began to cheer and whoop, just like in the video. it was amazing, definitely one of the best moments of my life, and I think that everyone should be able to see an eclipse irl in their lifetime

Seeing one in real life is my dream. I love space and everything to do with it. Sadly, my sister doesn't agree. I showed her this video, and she just looked, somehow, unimpressed. Just imagine, being unimpressed by a total solar eclipse! BTW if you love solar eclipses, I would suggest you read "Every Soul a Star" by Wendy Mass. Fantastic author, and the story is all about a total solar eclipse.

We drove 5 hours to see this phenomenon and it was worth it. It has to be experienced directly. No video or photograph will ever capture the full effect. Those who have never seen it will never know what they’re missing. I was one of them until April 8, 2024.

I missed totality in 2017...but thankfully saw 2024's. This was my first Total Solar Eclipse and words cannot describe how I felt. Even watching this video (before and after) and looking at all of the images do not do it justice. I will do everything I can to fly to Europe for 2026.
