@@llarose it really is all about the place that Knopfler sends the listener too. He provokes some amazing visuals in our minds. Amazing storytelling.

This song brought me to the hard, often dread-filled storied life of a Coal Miner from the 60's in Cape Breton, Canada, due the celtic fusion here - because people there just gave in, as they needed the income - regards complaining and basically just sat down daily, resigned, drank beer and often said 'it is what it is' while many were 'All alone, dying of cancer' (Pink Floyd's 'Dogs') - not unlike Telegraph Road, which can take you anywhere with the backdrop of the message resonating deeply. For this song, It was the Celtic style fiddle and lyrics.

The garrison sleeps on the citidel with the ghosts and the ancient stones, high on the parapet the Scottish piper stands alone, high on the winds the Highland drums begin to roll, then something from my past just comes and stares right into my sole 🥺 what a amazing bit of writing 😮

The song is inspired by nightlife in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. The references to the crowds spilling out onto the streets, Charlotte St., The Tollbooth, the Scottish piper, the ghosts he mentions etc are all drawn from Edinburgh in real life, or its famous "haunted" old town. The drums of the tattoo is a reference to the annual military tattoo that takes place in association with the International Festival. The lyrics blend winter and summer nights (the opening verse mentions frost on gravestones) but the tattoo takes place in summer, and there isn't frost on gravestones then (even in Scotland).

It's hit or miss with my interpretations:) Thank you for shining light on the lyrics and the context of the backdrop!

I thought this too. At first I thought he was talking about the night life in Newcastle upon Tyne when he was young, but there wouldn't have been break dancers then. As the verses progressed, I realised he was actually singing about Edinburgh. Unfortunately it was not easy to hear the words as this reactor was talking over them and even obscured some of the music. This was completely unacceptable and an insult to Mark Knopfler, so I will not be subscribing. I would have thought a professional musician would have known better.

Interesting. What kind of Version are you listening to? The official lyrics are slitghly different. After "someting from the past just comes and stares into my soul" it says "cold on the tollgate with the caledonian blues" in the original lyrics. But here it says "and the drums beat the tattoo". Never heard that before...

I remember when my father bought that cd, at Christmas....he always bought Cd's on Christmas, to help us to play better guitar😂😢Now my father is dead! I cry when i listen to Mark Knopfler and his crazy "GHOST NOTES"😂( i call it like that, when with his fingers, and the volume, he make the notes coming from nowhere😂)... It's one of his first single cd, if i remember correctly, after Dire Straits! But, the guitar solo is just MAGIC.....But, i prefer when he was with Dire Straits.....But, it's, still, MAGIC... Peace from France....PS: thanks for that reaction, i didn't heard that song since 15 years😢I will go to see Eric Clapton live in Paris in May 2024....I will try to see all those legends, now, if i can, because now, they're old, maybe not a lot of chance to see them again....As a roadie i saw several of them, but, when i hear that, i want to see them live 1 more time....Thanks for your channel👍✌️

Thank you so much for sharing this deeply personal and touching story. It's amazing how music can connect us to precious memories, and Mark Knopfler's unique style, including those "ghost notes," holds a special place in many hearts. The nostalgia and sentimentality you express, from recalling this particular CD to the tears that accompany the memories, reflect the power of music to evoke profound emotions and transport us through time. Wishing you peace from Brazil! Your journey as a roadie, seeing several of these iconic musicians, adds a unique perspective. Thank you for sharing your story, and I'm glad the reaction video could bring back a piece of your musical past.✌️
