Mark has his way with words... ironically this line itself stares into the soul and having lived in Edinburgh the lyrics' capacity to invoke images of the city's landmarks in the wee hours is unparalleled.

Love this song by Mark Knopfler, partly because it's about my home city of Edinburgh and I do hope you manage to get to Scotland sometime, folks, I know you'd love it! There's a great video for this song too, all filmed in and around Edinburgh featuring Mark and others, hope you get a chance to see it, I've watched it many times, seeing many sights that I know so well! It's a beautiful song, lovely tune and wonderful words and basically it's a homage to Edinburgh by Mark, what a great songwriter he is! Thanks so much for your reaction, really enjoyed it. 😊😊

Yes great video, often thought it would make a great ad for either a car company or Omega watches, which Mark is wearing, but I don't think he has done such endorsements, to his great credit

@@blindriv3rIt's a fascinating video, filmed in 2000 I think, so well before the new Queensferry Crossing which was opened in 2017. Therefore, in the video at the beginning we see the Forth Railway Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge. Now of course the three bridges together are an amazing sight! 👍😊

I spent a year there as a student, still feel like it's the greatest city in Britain. This song's lyrics make me feel like I'm watching the city winding down on a winter's night.

If you have 10 minutes of your life, he gives an interview right after playing this song. You can find it by searching 'parkinson interview Mark Knopfler'. He's lovely, he's funny, just some nice stories altogether. You'll understand some more of his character 🙂

Thank you guys, for another amazing reaction. I'm so glad you enjoyed What It Is, it's definitely a special one for me. You're right about the fiddle player (Bobby Valentino). His contribution on this live performance was fantastic. Mark did go on to give a really interesting interview with Michael Parkinson, which is worth watching if you guys get the time. Nevertheless, another great song by an incredible musician and song writer. I'll never tire of your reactions to Knopfler and Dire Straits. Keep up the great work and thank you so much again ♥

Fantastic performance from Mark, this is one of his best solo songs. You should check out some of the documentaries about Mark.

The only possible complain is that this particular live version is without the extended final solo heard in the studio version and in following live concerts. Anyway, after more than 20 years that song still is in the bunch of his best solo stuff

This song takes me back to Edinburgh. The way he plays the guitar sort of mirrors the sound of bagpipes. About 45 years ago I went to the Edinburgh Tattoo. This takes place during the Edinburgh Festival in August and September each year. It is part military display, part international concert, with items from many other countries, but lots of Scottish music and dancing. There are examples of it on RU-vid.

He tenido el privilegio de poder estar en dos conciertos de Knopfler,el primero fue en la gira de Sailing to Philadelphia, donde esta canción abre el album, también fue el primer tema en ese concierto,no tengo ningún pudor en decir que estuve con lágrimas de felicidad durante todo el concierto...fui solo,sin nadie conocido cerca,eso lo hace más fácil... más de dos horas de felicidad... aún no habéis reaccionado a la canción News, por favor,hacedme caso,es una maravilla bastante desconocida

A million thanks for the review of this beautiful song..this ranks among my top favourite MK songs..my only suggestion is to check out the studio version of the song as well.. although you will miss the crowd response, yet there is a purity in the album version which sometimes gets missed in the live songs..am waiting for you to check out "Sailing to Philadelphia" and "Boom like That" too..
