Update: After years of unhappy marriage, Violet divorced the man she gets married to in this episode. Her parents took her back, because they saw how unhappy she'd become. "He seemed to do little more than loaf around on the site. I’d get up at 6am to scrub our trailer, go out to work and then come home to cook. We argued constantly. I’d been brought up to believe that men treated women like princesses but he treated me with no respect. After eight years I was utterly miserable, but I plastered on a smile and tried to pretend I was happy, I couldn’t talk to anyone as gypsies don’t tend to discuss our personal lives. But eventually after another heated argument, I knew I was worth more and had to leave. I did the next day.” She even had a divorce party: "My divorce party felt so good. I was proud of myself for getting out of my marriage."

As someone who’s from the UK gypsies have a bit of a reputation. As with any group of people some of them are really nice but some will turn up to places get off their faces and start fights. Unfortunately as well a lot of gyspy settlements in the uk are illegal and when they’re made to move on they leave the area full of rubbish and kind of destroy the place which doesn’t help win them any local support.

I worked in a school for a bit as a teaching assistant in the UK, and there was a boy I worked with who was a Gypsy. His mother had recently left her husband and the community, bringing him with her. He was in Year 8 (12-13), but had the reading and writing level of a 7-year-old. We did a lot to support him in the school, but he was so far behind the other children and we were expected to support him in an ordinary Year 8 class, the whole thing was impossible. He should have had access to special one-on-one attention, and additional English and Maths classes, but the funding just wasn't there. It's such a shame as his mother was clearly trying to do the right thing and leave the community and get her son a proper education. I really hope that both of them have done well since I left. He was a nice kid.

I know that a lot of actual Romni people HATE being called Gypsies. At least from personal experience. I have a friend who's from a Romni family and they distance themselves from "Gypsies" and refer to them as trailer trash and a disgrace. It's crazy, in all honesty. Edit: So, I'm just gonna put it here but this is just what my friend's community has told me and what they practice. Obviously there will be differences and some people WILL refer to themselves as what is considered a slur but let's be real, tons of other groups do the same. I'm not saying that this is 100% the way, there's a ton of different beliefs out there. I'm simply speaking from my experiences from several Romni communities that have been very vocal about the use of Gypsy and their dislike of it. :)

@@maximillian1109 Yes and no. Gypsy is a slur against the Romni people, used for many generations. At this point, true Romni people refer to themselves as Romni, while their counterpart, Gypsies, are more of the trailer living inbred generations. The UK’s relationship with Travellers (“gypsy” is a derogatory term here) is very turbulent. There’s a lot of aggression that comes from both sides. I don’t agree with people who are nasty to Travellers, but I can kind of understand what they’re concerned about. Often times, Travellers bring a lot of trouble with them and leave community areas in a total mess. They can take over community/residential spaces and push residents out, get into fights with people and police forces, steal stuff from peoples property. But like with any group, they’re the loud minority. Then on the other side, you have nastiness in the form of bullying and straight up assaults, with people treating them like crap or even going as far as to jump them in the street purely because they live differently or because they’ve been taught by UK society that it’s okay to mistreat them. We had a Traveller boy in my school and he was regularly beaten into hospital simply because his family were Travellers. Like a lot of things in the UK, it gets really nasty.

It’s weird to think the appropriate marrying age depends on culture. In the gypsy/traveler culture, girls 15, 16, and 17 years old are the right times to get married while the rest of us think that’s too young. Meanwhile this woman is 25 (the normal age for a woman to get married in America) and is an old maid by her culture’s standards. It’s also interesting that a woman who went against culture by working for years would marry a guy that doesn’t want his business ruined by identifying himself as gypsy or a traveler (meaning he also lives outside of his community) but they’re still choosing to live the gypsy life at home as a married couple.

As an american living in the uk, gypsys here have repu8tations for vandalization, harassment and theft when they move through a town. It's so prevalent that the government will put up flyers to avoid traveling when the gypsys are in the are. I personally have never witnessed it but my parents who live in the south of england have. A few of them threatened to steal their my parents dogs. Of course all I have said is anecdotal and I am sure it is a few bad apples that spoil the bunch type situation. So long story short, gypsys do face a large amount of prejudice in england and from what I have heard throughout Europe.

They still circle the neighbourhood looking for goods to steal, everybody is on edge around them, they just don't care about any rules or moral in the country, only their own. But I'd still retaliate, I hate letting criminals do whatever they want, they think they're gods and someone needs to put them back in their place. Our entire family is now in permanent enemy terms with theirs and I don't know what they're gonna do in the future but we did say we'll end them no matter if we get arrested or not so for years now they don't meddle with us but we'll see whether it's because they're just scared or cooking up some trouble for us when we least expect it.

Most American and Canadian gypsies are not even close to that. Also yeah the marginalization of gypsies in the UK is crazy. It is correct to say that they do commit a lot of crimes, but that is because they've been systemically marginalized for generations. Most live in a dirt floor makeshift shacks in a first world country. They have to hide their heritage just to get higher education, housing, and job opportunities. So of course A lot of them commit crime.

@Olive i’m canadian and know people who’ve been denied enrolment in the area for juvenile records, would either have to attend a troubled kids centre for education or have to move hours away and appeal to different schools. repeat offenders are born from troubled children who receive condemnation instead of help. and the commenter above is describing a self perpetuating cycle; your grandpa stole food to survive, now you’re denied employment; therefore, you and your further generations steal too. a lifestyle of being a moving convoy of people means discrimination can literally drive you from your homestead, dominate your life, make you easily identifiable. it’s the hopelessness of already being labelled a thief, and the poverty of whoever raised you, that makes the crime cycle continue. i’ve met plenty of people stuck in this cycle in the suburbs, never mind toronto or other canadian cities. it’s a human behaviour to choose the easy route of stealing things, rather than starve your children looking for employment where none will hire~

I don't know if it's the same in the States, or even in the rest of Europe, but I'm Portuguese and gipsies really do have a bad rep here. They're a nomadic people since many many years ago, so they can show up anywhere and set up shop even in the most broken down part of your town. Unfortunately, this sense of inventiveness and almost romantic "free like the wind" nature if harshly off-set by their innate sense of getting into trouble. I'm sure many gipsies are not like this, but every time some gipsy party is involved in some sort of trouble, be it in my town, or over the news, it has always been their fault. They show up wherever they want, set up shop, and from there they live by their own set of rules. Local authority means nothing to them, so they feel culturally obligated to mess with the locals, be it by vandalism, stealing and picking fights with the police. They give no respect and are granted no respect, so I'm not surprised the bride's boss wasn't too keen on employing a gipsy.

I’m not English but I live here and the attitude towards gypsy/traveller culture was completely new to me but I learned quickly! There are many good reasons why they’re aren’t liked in U.K. They don’t believe that the law applies to them unless it’s something that they benefit from. They don’t believe they should pay taxes or contribute to ‘normal’ society at all and wouldn’t if they could. Even the ones in houses are always disputing having to pay for utilities and council taxes. The true travellers mostly live in caravans and just park themselves off wherever they feel like it, private land or not. And then become a huge nuisance by being rowdy and making a massive mess of wherever they’re living. When it gets too messy, they just pick up and find somewhere else to park. They also put their animals out to pasture wherever they feel like it too, the side of the main roads, wherever. They’re also terrible to their animals especially horses. There are laws here to protect them to some degree but basically they believe they’re not subject to any kind of social rules. But are always complaining about being discriminated against. They also believe they should be entitled to get everything for free. They steal and scam people and believe that’s a legitimate way of making money - it’s the ‘gypsy’ way. Which is why people don’t like to hire them or do business with them. If you rent out a reception hall to them for a wedding or whatever, they will trash it and won’t pay for damages or try skip out on paying all together. A lot of the animosity towards them is more historically based, going way back. But especially in the ‘90s and early 2000’s, they always being problematic. Nowadays tho, it seems like they tend to just keep to themselves or conform somewhat to society. And of course they aren’t all bad, some are really nice people.

It's a whole culture and I'm not part of it so take what I say with a pinch of salt. I am however from the UK so I can speak a bit on the friction between travelers/gypsies Vs gorgers/not gypsies. There are alot of stereotypes around travelers in UK. The one that most say is that they don't respect woman. Travellers are often Catholic,less so now. The men work and the woman are homemakers, the daughters are taught how to clean. They have chores and curfews unlike the sons. Travaller men will cheat on their wives with non gypsies but if a wife did that she could be kicked out of their community/family. They often don't integrate with gorgors. This leads to friction and suspicion between the two different cultures.

But we are extremely marginalized. Of course there are a lot of bad examples but the generations of systematic racism has told us the only way to survive in life is to not play by the rules that work against us. This arranged marriage stuff only happens with fundamentalist gypsies which is a minority sect within our culture. But it only builds onto this prejudice we face. Justifying the abuse we already receive.

Absolutely this. Its shocking how folk treat gypsy communities here - I know locally folk get banned from pubs just for the assumption they'll do something, pushed off of completely unused brownfield land which isn't even then used for anything, and constantly threatened. Though the concept of private land ownership is a bit squirrley to me anyway 😅 There's a static camps that's been here for at least a couple generations, and what folk have been able to achieve with the little they have been able to carve out for themselves is admirable. Only ever met gypsies who are completely normal people, any wee bits of work I've got done on the house has been to a high standard. Its just outright discrimination as you say, and new land laws for those south of the border will only make it worse

@Olive originally and very very far back, it seemd they cane from India and the surrounding regions. They were called gypsies because it was wrongly believed for a long time they came from Egypt. Irish travellers aren't from the east, as far as I remember, but genealogy shows they have been ethnically separate from the rest of the Irish population for a very long time. Don't forget, countless gypsies were murdered during the Holocaust. They are an ethnic group, but they include various different groups and cultures who identify differently from one another (an Irish traveller is not the same as a Roma for example).
@crypticcorgi8280
@crypticcorgi8280 2 года назад
@Olive we are an ethnic group, yes. We started out in India a very-very long time ago. But you do not need a nationality to be an ethnicity. @@laurabrown2982 very accurate, I am not used to seeing some one who knows their stuff about my culture. Not even a lot of people know how terribly my people suffered during the Holocaust. 1/3rd of my people where just Thanos snapped off the face of the planet and it is just a footnote in history books that people don't know about. It is one of the biggest reasons there is a lot of poverty and crime with modern Gypsies. You can look this up, after the survivors survived concentration camps, they had no attempt to repatriotize us back to the countries we where born in. They left us at the doors of the camps because we were historically nomadic. European gyspies lost everything, our homes, our generational wealth, and family. America was in charge of finding justice for us. When they Nazis tried to cite a book about how it wasn't about Jew's race but culture as legal defense after the war. No one bought it. They then sited a book about how the genocide was not about the Gypsy's race and everyone bought it until the 1970's. By the time they got around reparations for our people. The most of the survivors where already dead. America had their own racial hang ups at the time so the more swarthy skinned Gypsies seemed to receive no help. What is sad is "cultural differences" is cited to to this day as a justification of the prejudice we face today. Siting arranged marriages as one of the many reasons. But only a small sect of us even do that. Most of us have modernized with society. It is just an excuse for their racism.

So- Gypsies in the UK... I honestly feel like an open person, willing to give anyone a chance- thought the same about gypsies. I'm sure there's good groups and such out there- but you do hear things. Theres a street where they go through peoples bins and steal bikes etc- they kinda just toss the rubbish out of the bin and into the street with the mentality of 'it no longer belongs to them because they've thrown it out' Near me there was also a few gypsies that moved into a park. I walked past, they were dancing around and I think I mentioned outloud that it was cool. Sudden silence, everyone turned to stare- I kinda just backed out and the dancing began again. Next day there were police everywhere due to people getting assaulted. I didn't think I held anything on them, as I was like 'Probably a small group making things bad' but I went to a bar that had some gypsies in. Was totally cool with it, went to get a drink- one of them bumped into me and started to do weird hand movements as they spoke- I instantly had a sinking feeling as I spoke and I held my hands over my pockets while I talked. Some of his friends were trying to get behind me as he moved his hand around. I had never been so sure that they were trying to pick my pocket- the guy looked sad for a moment then turned away. I've never had every fiber of my being instantly like 'Protect pockets- stay alert- get away'... it honestly made me wonder if I was imagining it and I was being biased- I want to keep my mind open and accepting but I honestly couldn't help but have bad feeling instantly. I keep thinking back and being like 'What was that...? Was I imagining things or did I judge them based on their culture?'. I'm still open minded, I'd still accept someone if they said they were a gypsy after I got to know them- but I do feel like there's now a barrier that I can't help have up.

This may come across as prejudiced, they are not my prejudices, just an explanation. The reason the Irish traveling community (I'm not talking about Romani) have such a bad reputation in Ireland, at least in rural communities, is because there have been many cases of them setting up camp on private land like farms, then trash the area, take things, don't dump their sewage responsibly, basically have to get the police involved to get them to move along and leave the cleanup to the landowner. This has happened to my uncle and they essentially prevented him from being able to use one of his fields for his livelihood for weeks until the police got them to go. Obviously this is not all of the community, but enough to build a bad rep over generations. There's very little done on either front to foster goodwill between general society and them. Also it's always the trouble makers that make news and perpetuate the stereotype of antisocial behaviour. I went to primary school with a few girls whose families had settled and they were lovely, I was friends with some, not with all, because like with any individual there are personality clicks and clashes

Definitely true. My family/friends in the UK talk trash on Gypsies all the time. Apparently they’re known for rolling into town a few times a year getting trashed a the pubs and fighting, stealing, causing all sorts of problems and then they run from it and move on

I lived in Italy and saw firsthand the issues with gypsies. I understand the reason why people have a bad view of them. Pickpocketing, squatting, littering, and scams were a common thing we ran into. This was a problem in Paris too. As a Canadian it was shocking, I've only seen a police report about a gypsy group that was shoplifting our stores when I worked at Danier leather. They used strollers, booster bags and long skirts to conceal the jackets, they'd cut off the security tags with dog nail clippers and tuck the tags into the pockets of other jackets. That was my first experience with gypsies until I went to Europe. I wanted to believe that the stereotype wasn't true but sadly it isn't.

Gypsies do have a pretty bad reputation here in the UK. I've watched a lot of this show, and in most of the episodes they talk about how they keep the wedding venue secret until the last minute because if the owners find out it's a gypsy wedding they'll cancel. Gypsy weddings have a reputation for fighting and property damage here, I think.

For those interested it appears that Violet Ann finally divorced her husband after about 7 years of her trying to make the marriage work. According to her, her parents could see how miserable she was and let her come back home because they wanted happy Violet back. After her divorce was finalized she threw a divorce party with karaoke, a cake and her altered wedding dress. "As I unpicked the stitches to modify it, I felt as though I was unpicking the misery of my marriage. It was brilliant. And I went back to the same bakery that made my wedding cake - they’d never made a designer divorce cake before." Tldr: She got divorced, threw a rager, got a job and is happy 😁

I live in Poland and here the gypsies also have a bad reputation. While working in the store, I was robbed by a gypsy woman and had to return the money to the store from my own pocket. Later, I found out that my friends from the shops nearby, seeing that someone looks or behaves like a gypsy, do not serve him in the store. When I was little, my parents scared me that if I didn't behave well, the gypsies would come and take me away from them.

I used to work in a restaurant (in Utah. I’ve lived here my whole life and have never seen gypsies) but they would come into the restaurant (which was off the highway) and it was always a rough time. Not only would it be a group upwards of 30, they would be beyond loud, often drunk, and destroy the dining room. I hate stigmatizing people and groups but I have some understanding as to why it happened with gypsies. And why she wouldn’t have wanted her coworkers to have known

8:15 yeah gypsies aren't treated well in the uk at all, and they're called travellers because they say 'gypsy' is offensive! And as for businesses not wanting them in their establishment, I'd say probably 90% + of UK gypsies I've ever met especially the men are extremely aggressive and confrontational toward non gypsies. They also move around from place to place in big travelling groups with all their caravans, break onto privately owned grounds and make camp there illegally, wreck the area, leave bags and bags of rubbish, hunan waste qnd sometimes unwanted pets in the feild when they move on causing the landowner and expensive amount of cleanup! Yeah they don't have a great rep over here....!

Hi gypsy here (16) lol that advice is so wise. I almost got engaged because I was confused and scared of not being able to have a choice in who I marry anymore I wanted to convince myself that I wanted it but I regretted it as soon as I said it. I had no idea who he was and if I wanted to get to know him I wasn’t allowed a social life or go to school anymore. I am so thankful that I said that I didn’t want to marry that guy. I still remember the day my mum told me some guy wants to ask to marry me my heart fell to my stomach it was like I watched my whole life fall apart. I’ve seen what gypsy marriages look like it’s hell (from my experience) and yeah people are cruel to us but I didn’t face any problems like that I’ve only seen my father and my mum get thrown out of shores (rightfully so they would shop lift) I fund it funny that I was surrounded by crime and I’m scared to even throw a paper on the ground or even steal stuff lol dad was a drug dealer mum stole a bunch grandma is scamming people in Poland. Life’s crazy man. (Dating isn’t allowed for women only men can have girlfriends but women have husbands 🤮🔫)

Those horse drawn wagons are definitely what some travelers live in, some have switched to campers and rv’s. People outside of the culture have kind of appropriated them and turned it into a fantasy Ren faire thing

I live near a travellers camp and in primary school we often met the kids from that camp, it was rare for them to stay in school for more than 2 years. In my last year I made friends with one girl and was jealous when I heard they moved around a lot, I asked her where she was going after school and she said she was staying home. Again I was so jealous because she didn't go to school. Now I understand what she may have been dragged into.

I am of Gypsy blood, it's pretty cool to know that about your family. My Granddad was "England's smallest cyclist" back in the early 1900's. At three years old he could do some tricks and cracked people up with his winning personality. He was a great man, I'm so glad I was able to spent my first 19 years knowing and loving him. Our family is "normal" nowadays but I will bust out a quick curse if you cross me. It's a good thing I'm such a good guy. I've only done it twice.

FINALLY THE RETURN! I’m getting married in two months and I watch and rewatch your Gipsy wedding videos with my fiancé because we *definitely* want our wedding to be equal dumpster fire 🔥 Edit: okay I just got to the end of the episode and this wasn’t a dumpster fire, it was just sad 😣 Poor girl, marriage shouldn’t and doesn’t have to be the end of your freedom! Your dreams and independence is important and the right guy will embrace that and help you reach your dreams! I’m graduating from college a month before the wedding, and my future husband is moving with me to Los Angeles so I can pursue my dream job as a screenwriter. I’m so so sorry she had to give up her job and independence!

There was once a problem with holy water being stolen from the church. The pastor of the church waited to see what would happen, he approached them kindly. Took them outside, blessed a faucet, and told them they were welcome to as much as they pleased. (No they didn’t bottle and sell it). We have to protect our children, but for those who adhere to our laws and abide to the church (many have legitimate businesses) are very different. Now- we do have an excess of psychics and there are elders who with access can do certain “spells” but they are normally only those who are true Gypsy and have married within their culture (not all of them are related). There are occasional financial offers to “gorgers” (I don’t think “we” are referred to as that), to “clean the bloodline”. Most of these are looking for dark haired blue eyed men. Common terms depicting cool or fashionable: Blackest Maggest (most magnificent) Superstar They do perform in front of their houses, and while I was a child they often looked more like toddlers and tiaras, they mostly stick to recognizable high end brands. They live in lavish McMansions, often these are built at a child’s birth, and are completed as she ages. Marriages are generally about being the ideal “merger” with families of equal means. The family usually resides in a trailer nearby to absorb the costs of these tremendous homes. Often sacrificing their own lives for the bloodline

For future reference Ken, that manager dude is not wearing a durag, that's a turban. That man isn't black, he's South Asian. I doubt you misunderstood on purpose, but the little "bump" at the top of his head is usually a strong indicator that it's not a durag lmao.

I grew up next to the biggest Irish traveler settlement in the US. I was best friends with a young girl from the community growing up. She was the last one in school with us and I’ll never forget when her parents took her out. She now lives in a huge house with kids and is married to someone she said she didn’t want to marry. They have very strong traditions and reputations that keep them trapped in the system.
