What's it like for staff on the front lines inside a maximum-security juvenile prison? From inside the cell unit where she works with teens age 17 and under, psychiatric social services counselor Stephanie Roberts says the job might not be what most people think. In this interview, Stephanie talks about the empathy she feels for kids who struggle with anger issues and a history of trauma at home. She discusses the challenges involved in getting through to kids who have spent a lifetime in the child welfare and juvenile justice system, and how too many people often label these kids as "throw away" teens. Stephanie says it's her job to get to the root of the problems the kids bring with them inside, and work with them to help instill confidence and a sense of security before they return home to their communities.

I'm actually looking into being a Juvenile Counselor . Statistics say u only help 1 out of every 10 . But that one is still progress.

One thing about kids, is that, when you talk to them, and I mean really talk to them, they will listen. In my opinion, the postmodern approach might work best for juveniles. I can guarantee that soft skills such as empathy could make our break the counseling relationship. I love this.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is amazing. When you boil it down, it is about detecting and constructively channeling your emotions. Everyone can benefit from it, not just those that are troubled. I think it would serve us well to invest in adult prisoners as well. Juvenile and adults in prison are there because they acted on some emotion.

@roseberrybushasmr1299 - Yes, many find it extremely rewarding, although the burn out rate can be high, too, unfortunately. We hope our videos show that there is a lot of need out there for kids who are struggling. Sometimes, just one person can help make all the difference. Thank you for watching!
