Cashiers being rude all the time happens to my grandpa, who has been deaf since birth. I always tell the cashier "he's deaf!" because they do get really rude with him. But when I worked as a cashier at CVS, I fell into the same trap. I thought my customer was being rude by not answering and I finally realized he was deaf! I was so mad at myself for acting like every other cashier! I also think that sometimes cashiers don't mean to be mean, retail work just makes you grumpy.

I’ve worked at GameStop and Office Depot and both places we would get in trouble if we don’t greet a guest. GameStop wasn’t as bad but at Office Depot they made us wear radios and would call out what the customer was wearing and which way they went and we had to reply back we saw them and go ask if they need help. And then report back on the radio. If we missed customers we would get warnings or write ups. So sales people aren’t always trying to be creepy a lot of the time they’re trying to not get introuble or fired.

TY for informing about this. :) Hearing people could understand better from this.

I went shopping with a friend once and we were checking out separately behind each other. I bought my stuff kinda responded to what I thought the cashier was saying and I assumed that it was a normal exchange. After we left the store my friend was like "you know the guy was asking you paper or plastic and you just kept saying 'yeah'?" Umm... No... I had no idea. Stuff like this probably happens all the time and I'm completely unaware of it.

As a hearing retail employee, I'm sorry you had those experiences. We don't get a lot of deaf people in our stores(that we know of), but when we do I do my best to accommodate for them because y'all go through so much shit. Thanks for making this video, I learned a lot from it.

I used to be worried about being perceived as rude whenever I "ignore" a salesperson trying to talk to me, but I just stopped giving a shit. I ran out of shits to give! Maybe one day you will too!

Always enjoy watching your videos. Nice to have videos that I can relate to. Being deaf has been hard, especially oral deaf as it is hard for people to understand even more. I just avoid talking as much as possible as people here are rude.

Yep!! I hate when everyone's shopping behavior mirrors mine. I used to work in retail, I was contastly asking customers if they needed help. Surprised to say they'd answer back 'If I need help, I'll ask' . Glad I don't work in retail anymore. Watching from London UK.

I’m HoH and I was with a friend who also happens to speak ASL. We were at the store and were signing to each other in line. The cashier saw us, automatically assumed that we were both fully deaf, and didn’t say a word to us. This would have been fine, but she was being incredibly awkward about it and seemed pretty annoyed. When I told her I was a part of the rewards program, she literally took a step back because she thought I was deaf (completely). She was kinda nasty after that, and when I walked away my friend told me that she (who has full hearing) heard the woman complaining about it to the next customer. Ever since, I have hated going to the stores and only using ASL.

As someone who has worked small retail I can tell you many of them require the staff to go up to every person and ask if they need help or if they are looking for something. It drives me crazy on both sides I hated bothering every client and I hate being the bothered client. I am hearing, but my experience at retail helping deaf people is what lead to me wanting to learn ASL. I actually feel what would make the world a better place is if ASL was taught as regular curriculum to all at an early age. I felt so stupid that I didn't know ASL. So now as a college student my major is ASL and I plan on being a teacher to spread the language to better the world (hopefully 💜). I love watching you videos to get different perspectives, since of corse not all deaf people are the same of have had all the exact same experiences.

I'm hearing but I learned asl for several reasons. When I'm in the store or in any public place (in my area) I see so many Deaf/Hard Hearing people alone shopping and when I do (in most cases) the store clerks or cashiers almost always have no idea how to communicate with the person. It's good to know asl at in this area, but no one really seems to care to help.

I normally wear a badge holder around my neck with a "I am deaf" card in it when shopping alone. Had an awkward moment last weekend while shopping with my wife. Another customer stopped me and starting talking. When I didn't answer her she gave me a funny look and pointed to her ear. So I flipped out my hearing aid. She shook her head no and stuck here finger in her ear. Turned out she was looking for earbuds for her son. She probably thought I was crazy. LOL

I've helped my grandma before. She's been completely deaf since about 4 years old I think. She does well by herself but I've seen the people behind the counter try and talk to her when I'm unloading the cart and I haven't had the chance to talk to them yet. I can see they get frustrated because they think she's ignoring them. I don't think being deaf has ever slowed her down though. She might have just frustrated a few people who didn't know from time to time

My girlfriend's daughter is deaf and when she married and became pregnant, she went for shopping baby stuff! The sale assistant was hilarious, and explained everything 4-5 times (and loud!) to her! So the daughter turn to her mother and tells her, "mom, tell her that I 'm deaf, not stupid, I know she try hard to help me but she has exhausted me..." Big hugs from Greece!
