Third culture kids: aka. people who have grown up in a culture that's different to their parents' during their development years. That's what me and my best friend Mun Jeong talked about in this video, as we have lived our lives in Korea and in the UK. Thanks for watching :)

Happy Lunar New Year! I grew up living in many places due to my dad being in the military and it made me more accepting of all people and had friends of all races. We were all friends. Still to this day, I love meeting people of all cultures.

Regarding the racial segregation thing, I think it depends on what school you go to in the states. At my public school, there were around 1,500 students and it was quite diverse. Everyone hung out together. I think it just depends.

Watching this video makes me realize there are so many parallels between being Korean adopted and being a third culture kid. It's obviously a different experience bc you grew up with access to your birth culture through your family, but I can totally relate to feeling out of place in either country (sticking out like a sore thumb in the US and people not considering me Korean "enough" when I'm in Korea) And I'm also a huge ARMY bc BTS has been such a tangible way for me to connect to Korea. Thanks for putting content about identity out there bc it's fascinating to hear other people's experiences!

Unrelated. Just wanted to send out a hug saying I hope you are doing well. Sounds like the behind the scenes at NS has been rough and trying for everybody. Sad to hear but Danny had to let everybody know. I am just some random mommy/professional/middle aged lady type out here in Houston but I have come to care about you 3 and I hope the wounds between you heal with time. I have unfortunately been around long enough to have sense of the awkward pain I suspect you are living with and I hope that life brings you all opportunities in recompense beyond what you can imagine right now. Blessings to all 3 of you, Danny, David, and you, dear Anna. Happy Seollal and I hope this year brings you peace, contentment, and prosperity. God bless.

Such an interesting video! I related so much, currently living in the UK but having grown up in Canada and Romania (where I was born). Being "third culture" is SO REAL!! It is of course different in certain ways when you are physically similar to the majority, but the confusion about where you belong is still there, and very real... as is the realisation that the advantages of being a third culture kid most definitely outweigh the negatives!! At least I think so... :)

i relate and also don't relate to tcks as a child of immigrants in the states... i def agree with the identity crisis thing, but i think, ironically, bts made me want to get in touch with my roots more even though i'm not korean LOL. sadly my parents country is war torn and i don't have many ways of visiting or keeping in touch, but i do what i can. this was such a nice video to watch! you two seem so cool i can see why you're friends. also 9:15 this kinda helps make the kpop world make a little more sense to me lolol 😭 and happy new year!! 💜

HI ladies! Happy Seollal to you both in retrospect.. So this was an interesting watch. I thought third culture meant something more similar to my story than the ones you mentioned: I'm British born but to a Turkish mum and Mauritian dad, so I'm only British by birth but not blood... then I had to learn about my parents' cultures when we went on holidays to their home countries. My younger bro is just 17 months younger than me and we learned resilience and independence early when we travelled alone together with no adults, we'd fly to Turkey every summer to see our grandparents for example. We grew up in Paris part time also, so now at 43 I speak 6 languages and I'm learning Korean! Those are some benefits but I can definitely relate to not feeling like you fit in anywhere. Anyway regardless of the definition I think there's for sure similarities between children of immigrants and people living in non-native cultures. My kids are black and white from my side and Peruvian Chinese from their dad's side, and I raised them in the UK and in Spain for 3 years. We now live in Glasgow (Anna you'd fit right in now, there's a large Korean population here, and Partick is called the Chinatown of Glasgow because there's more East Asian restaurants than "indigenous" places, it's great. We even have a Korean church!) and I feel way more accepted in Scotland where they are funny, open and welcoming compared to the south of England where a longer exposure to other cultures has maybe caused them to be more close minded. I'm coming to Seoul in June so let's see how it is for me there... Thank you for your videos and sharing your experiences! 💜

Some people of the same race stick together because they share the same culture and for protection from racism, it’s group safety.

I am not a TCK but I am a foreigner in the country in which I currently live but people don’t realize it until I speak. Over the years I have quietly listened to the racial comments in some situations that I have encountered, interesting to hear how some people really feel about cultures outside of their own and sad that this type of ignorance persists in the Information Age.

You didn’t suffer racism in the UK? You’re very lucky, maybe it’s because you’re an Asian female and racists are less likely to be racist to Asian females and because you went to a middle class boarding school. I’ve suffered a lot of racism growing up as a Chinese male in the UK and it’s really affected my life and beliefs, Asians in western countries suffer a lot of racism and racial abuse. I still suffer racism in the UK as a 38 year old and I’ve been called ch**k many times. I’m Chinese.

Good video! But a bit worried about the part 'share everything btw couples'. This is so rare thing even in Korea and I'm over 40 and have never accepted or done going through sns and texts with my ex in the past. So please don't generate and excuse that this is the common couple thing in Korea 'cause it is obviously not. Most normal Koreans feel very offensive on this attitude. Ciao!
