I'm french canadian and the only thing I would give as an advice to anyone wanting to move to Montreal is that if at some points you want to visit other cities in the province of Québec like Quebec city, Gaspésie etc. you will most likely need at least some basic French. Also, being bilingual in both language is a really huge plus and like said can sometime be required depending on your job industry. Indeed, it's true that some french people doesn't like english speaking people, there's a long history behind it but I would say, as long as you're making an effort/showing effort the french peeps will appreciate it :) I think what french peeps get angry on is when some english people doesn't care/show no interests in learning basic french despite living in a french province!

I noticed that too. When I went on a road trip towards Gaspesie, the fact that we even tried to speak in french made the locals really happy. Not to mention they were some of the nicest people. Locals were friendly and tried to help us as much as possible. They just want you to try which is completely understandable.

@@sheldoncooper0 lol you got owned by a ton of facts saying you're wrong and all you have to add is how the ''french lost'' I pity your pettiness end of story, if you're going to be a resident of the province of Québec (in or out of Montreal) it's important that you try to learn some french out of RESPECT for the rest of the francophone population in that province and city. And just so you know, all political assemblies in Québec (on the provincial level) are in french, provincial owned stores communicate in french, and everywhere you go, you are assured to get a french service. You can't go to a store and have none of the employees speak a word of french. and like Zoe said in her video, as long as people see that you're trying to use a bit of french, quebecois are really respectful of your efforts in 99% of the time and will gladly help you with their broken english and teach you a french word or two

Quick analysis for people wanting to settle and live in Montréal. French vs English edition. If you want to live in Montréal and live in French, don't want to learn English: Go to the far east of the city. If you want to learn English but live in French, go center east or downtown. If you want to live in Montréal and live in English, don't want to learn French: Go to the far west of the city. If you want to learn French but live in English, go center west or downtown. Downtown is where culture and languages all blend. If you do settle in Montréal I would at least recommand knowing French basics because of the law 101 that helps us protect the French language. I won,t go into details, you gotta know the history of Canada to understand the law 101's legitimacy. TLDR: we're kind of the last rampart of French (there's 1 million of French speaker outside of Québec too), surrounded by 330 million English speakers. I wouls also suggest to learn French if you come just out of respect, people will appreciate the effort. What Zoe said is true, we tend to switch to English pretty quick because your French will be bad when you first start learning it, which is totally normal and fine, but we do appreciate it deep down, we just want to accomodate you. So if you want to practice it, just say "no, no, I want to practice my French please, I want to get better." We will really be grateful. Have a safe trip, it is a great city, it has its flaws like everywhere else, but it's is a beautiful city. As we say here: Montréal, je t'aime. (Montréal, I love you)

I just want to add some more info for vegetarians; Montreal has a lot of vegan and vegetarian friendly restaurants that are affordable. Even at non-vegetarian restaurants and fast-food joints there are plenty of decent meatless options and if not, staff are usually pretty good with removing meat or putting it on the side (for your friends and family who may eat it) if you ask. I highly encourage you to do your research! "Pushap" for example is a really great cheap vegetarian Indian restaurant, and Warehouse has really cheap (but also a bit small in portion) sized vegan, meat and vegetarian friendly options as well.

Je voulais toujours aller la (Montreal) pour habiter mais je ne sais pas quel niveau de francais j'ai besoin pour travailler confortablement? Aussi, a ton avis, c'est quoi le nieveau de ton francais? 1-10?? Btw, you can respond in english haha.

Hi! It really depends on which company you want to work for. Like I said in the video, you could get by here with zero french. I would say mine is 8/10 spoken and 6/10 written hahah. If you want to move here, make it happen & you’ll improve your french upon arrival 😌

Really enjoyed this video as I am going to be attending Concordia as an international from the UK. If you do end up doing a 2nd part to this, could you speak talk a bit about the weather as I hear it gets ridiculously cold? Everything will be online when it comes to my Uni work but I wanted to know whether you think living close to your university a big benefit, especially for a first year, or do you think it doesn't make much of a difference?

As a French-speaking Montrealer, I would highly recommend learning a bit of French if you want to live here. For me, it's a question of respect. We don't care if your English is not perfect, but we do appreciate anglophones making an effort. Most of us do speak English, so why not return the respect? So in that sense, it's hard to understand why a lot of people don't make an effort, not even to say "Bonjour". And I understand that it's Zoe's experience that English is not required for her work, but if you don't know a minimum of French, many employers will not even return a phone call, specially if it's a customer-facing job. It is a French province after all.

Can you use kangalou in a French sentence please? is it a verb like kangalouer? or is it a proper name just for this website? My thoughts are that it should've been originally kang+a+louer where -er later chopped off so kang should be a sort of a slang? Any thoughts?!

Without getting too deep, there is unfortunately subtle racism everywhere, however, you would not experience call outs on the streets like we hear about in the US. One of my best friends is Latina and she enjoys it here very much. Also, winter is cold but you can make it work!!
