There’s a lot to consider when it comes time to apply for a pediatric residency after medical school. In this video, meet first-year resident Roberto Delgado-Zapata, MD, second-year resident Lauren Aiello, MD, and third-year resident Michael Bagg, MD, as they describe what it’s like to be a pediatric resident at Children’s Hospital Colorado through the University of Colorado Pediatric Residency Program - and how our Program is preparing them for successful careers as pediatricians.

About our Program
As a joint program between the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Children’s Hospital Colorado and Denver Health Medical Center, our residents work at the region’s top-tier institutions for medical training. With a longstanding emphasis on individualized education, our Program supports pediatric residents through mentorship, complementary experiential and didactic learning, and empowerment. Here, our faculty members work to ensure that residents become team leads, helping them build confidence and autonomy as they become well-rounded physicians and future leaders in pediatrics.
As a resident, you’ll work with a diverse patient population at three hospitals: at Children’s Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado Hospital, both located on the world-class Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, and at Denver Health in the heart of Denver. And because Children’s Colorado draws patients from across our seven-state region and nationally, medical trainees in our program see a vast number of pediatric conditions. Dr. Bagg says, “You will see everything at this program, and that is only to your benefit in your medical education.”
“This program teaches you how to be an amazing doctor with the humble attendings and the vast amount of knowledge our program has,” says Dr. Aiello. “But what I love even more is that the number-one priority is making you feel comfortable, making you feel safe and making you grow as a person each and every day.”
For Dr. Delgado-Zapata, the support of his mentor set him up for success.
“[In the first year] you’re absorbing everything and learning how things are done, how you want to advocate for your patients, how you make connections in the community. You learn how to use all these resources in the coming year and be the best version of you - and the best pediatrician you can be.”
And our residency program offers much more than clinical opportunities. Dr. Aiello says, “I looked for a program where I could feel at home and build longstanding relationships with friends, colleagues and faculty members to become that home away from home. The friendships I have made are ones that will last a lifetime... My attendings are all on a first-name basis. We go on hikes together, they come over to my house … We’re just one big family.”
