What it's like to fly the Boeing Starliner CST-100 Spaceship

NASA recently announced who will be flying on the first commercial crew flights and both Boeing and SpaceX are racing to get their spaceships, their launch sites AND their spacesuits ready to return humans to space from US soil.
Boeing’s spaceship is the CST-100 Starliner, a capsule shaped spacecraft that can fly up to 7 astronauts to space. For NASA missions to the International Space Station, it will fly up to 4 astronauts at a time, filling the rest of the capsule with cargo.
The Starliner will launch on top of perhaps the most reliable rocket ever made. ULA’s Atlas V with 2 strap on solid rocket motors and 2 RL-10 upper stage engines. A configuration that an Atlas 5 has never actually flown before, but all the hardware has been flown many times throughout history.
Check out my article all about what it's like to train with the Boeing CST-100 Starliner and wear their incredible space suit! everydayastronaut.com/boeing-...

When I went to Johnson Space Center in Houston a few years ago, there was such a heavy dose of emotion it was almost unbearable -- I had no clue one of the Shuttles was going to do a fly-by pigbacking on a 747, I still loathe having lost that video. There's just so much history at the place, seeing flown Mercury capsules, actual spacesuits, all sorts of space gear both real and mock-ups, that just drove me wild. And the look on my face was likely even nerdier and more overwhelmed than yours when I caressed that very same piece of Moon rock -- heck, I was touching a rock from the Moon! Watching this video, the aerial shot of the (humongous) Saturn V warehouse, the thrill of interacting with the new frontier in space tech, that all was very touching and relateable and took me back to that amazing day. Thanks for making me cry for a good reason for a change.

I used to work at JSC, a long time ago. I have been in the mockup facility many times. I can't believe the Space Shuttle simulator is still there. I would feel profoundly humiliated every time I saw it if I were still there. The Starliner and the Crew Dragon, like all capsules, are space *craft*, not ships. We have had space ships in the past, and we will have them again one day, but, for the time being, space ships do not exist. Tim, I love what you do, and I am so happy to see your enterprise (oh, that word!) growing in so many ways. It's just fantastic to see an ordinary, everyday guy find a way to participate in the renaissance of space flight. Of course, the day will come, in the not too distant future, when you will be able to buy a "ticket to ride" on an actual space ship. Given how well known and popular you are getting to be, I bet somebody offers you a free one when the time comes. Keep up the good work.

It seems (from a layman's perspective) that the Dragon is more progressive in its design and execution. Plus liftoff of Falcon was ridiculous fast! Wasn't expecting that! You said that the binoculars are important, if you said what their purpose is or how they are used I missed it. So what makes them important?
@qilinxue989
@qilinxue989 5 лет назад
Well it's not really needed in the simulator, but when astronauts actually fly the thing, they need binoculars to check for little green aliens in the distant.

Respect! I Love the way how you were able to make your obsession so famous that thay acctually invite you to see the real stuff and you can share it for likeminded fans. Good job man. I wish I could do something like that, but I like too many stuff and not in that much detail. I guess I have not find my 1 obsession that would be interesting for others. Enough about me. You rock!
