ALL OF THIS IS SO TRUE. I bought my Cayman S in September. Its an 07 with 58k on the clock in immaculate condition. Its the most awesome car you could possibly imagine. The balance is amazing, the handling (as long as you don't overcook it in the wet) is perfectly matched to the structure of the car, and its a DRIVERS car. Nothing flash, just an awesome sports car, Matt
I'm hoping to one day get a cayman. I'm a massive Porsche fan but i'm not one of those purists who says only the 911 is a true Porsche, i actually prefer the cayman.
Sportscars_BE AKA Hannes I love the caymans and appreciate the performance and value per dollar that you get with them, but the 911 is still top dog in my book. I'm not a fan of the fact that the new caymans all have 4 cylinder turbos except for the GTS and GT4
I bought my 986 a two years ago. It's a 2003 and had 20,300 miles, five speed. I drive it everyday! It really was the best choice for what I wanted. I paid $17,000 for it. It is the most versatile car ever; mine is very practical and the two trunks are awesome, plus that flat six power and growl. I now have 51,000 miles on it and have enjoyed them all. Once you drive a Porsche, I definitely think you understand the appeal. I do my own work, oil change costs me 30 mins and maybe $75 for oil and filter. They are easy to work on and uncomplicated to understand. Really enjoy your channel. Keep shifting, man!
Wow I feel exactly the same about my cayman. I bought a manual cayman s '06 early this year, I am so glad with it. I really love the induction sound in the cabin
I want a Cayman, but the IMS bearing issue is holding me back. That's one of the reasons that the pre 2009 models are so cheap. If the bearing goes bad, the cost to fix the blown motor can be astronomical. As far as the oil change goes….pull the plug, swap the filter, put the plug back and fill it up with oil. It's just like any other car. cost is about $30.00.
The IMS bearing failure rate is higher in the S version ....... that's why I have the base cayman. A little sacrifice on the horsepower but well worth it.
Spencer Goth I’m a year late I doubt you may even log into this account but awesome!!! I’m a junior in college and picking up a 2007 cayman and have many plans for it. I got a killer deal 😆
Welcome to German engineering, just had a friend (in Ann Arbor) who has had Honda's, Nissan's, Chrysler's, etc and she just got a 2011 MB C280 and she's blown away, going to get another one, maybe a E class soon
I had an slk 280 before the cayman, and I can say that I didn't miss the convertible. But that could be because I didn't care much for the slk. As for the manual, I had the manual on cayman and it was amazing, but when I test drove the 13 cayman, I loved the PDK more. Plus I was living in Atlanta at the time, and dealing with that traffic, an automatic is great.
Yes, since I am very fortunate to own a this car, it is important to me to share the experience of driving cool cars and hopefully spark an interest for others. So many people have generously shared their cars with me, and that's what has made me the enthusiast I am today.
Thanks. Nice summary. I have a new golf r and LOVE it... but wholeheartedly agree with you. Probably the most balanced car in the world the cayman. A great second car.
70k miles is high? It’s a porsche not a damn princess car like a Lambo. Drive the damn thing. Well maintain higher mileage is better than one that sits in a garage.
Thanks for the review. You come across as a very sensible and articulate guy, at such a young age! Not too many people driving Porsches at your age either. Hope you are aware porsche engines and transmissions are usually built to require a rebuild after 100,000miles, which will cost north of $20,000!
Enjoy your car. Hate to tell you but most German cars depreciate badly bc of the maintenance costs. I pay $280 for my oil changes. $150 for brake fluid change yesterday.
Andrew Lastname exactly...and god help you when you need to do tranny work, valve adjustments, new brakes. $21k will $30k or more over the next 2 years.
Congratulations to the Cayman! Really great car with a tremendous handling and awesome engine sound. Lucky you that you found an affordable Cayman. They tend to get rare or pricy during the last year. At least here in Germany.
I've been watching a your videos for a while and just realized you're in Ann Arbor - I'll have to keep an eye out for the Cayman on the road here! Good info in your videos, I had an FR-S for a few years and now the Cayman is catching my interest 👍
You're in Ann Arbor? I bought a black on black 2008 Cayman S just last spring. I'm surprised I haven't seen you around anywhere..not that big of a town. Nice work on the video though. You nailed a lot of the things I think about owning the car.
P.S. Just read one of your comments. - Don't be worried about the intermediate shaft, yours is a 2007 so it should have the newer IMS - Here's a previous post I wrote about the IMS issue - "For all of us concerned about the Porsche IMS Bearing issue - I found a very informative article from Autohaus Hamilton in Australia about the IMS. The article also lists all the models and engines (with engine numbers) that are affected. To read the article just type in “Autohaus Hamilton IMS” into google. The Porsche models that are prone to IMS failure and should be replaced are: - All 986 Boxster models. - 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715 - All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models) - 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745" Good luck.
I just sat in one at a Carmax. Everything was nice except for the steering wheel. It's massive. It needs to be way smaller especially for a small sports car.
I own one, its a good car for sure. However it lacks the soul of my previous lotus elise. Still i wouldnt buy another lotus unless i wasnt using it as a daily driver. For daily driving my cayman s is great, even in bad weather if driven sensibly its no issue. The car looks good but it doesnt attract all that much attention. Its just another porsche in most peoples opinions. In the Lotus you almost always attract possitive attention but in the porsche often people assume you're an asshole. My only annoyance with the cayman are the windows. When the car is frozen over the windows wont roll down which results in the doors not shutting properly until the car warms up and frees the mechanism from ice.
+mechonomist It's pretty cool to hear you acknowledge how lucky and grateful you are to have had the opportunities that wound up with you owning this car. I'm thinking of buying an s2000 soon, and it's really between the s2000, this car, maybe a 2007 base Vette..obviously the power of a Vette is always attractive and I love the way they look in person. But I'm really drawn to the s2000. My only concern is the lack of power compared to the cayman S. I wouldn't buy a cayman though. Also I was looking at that weird little wing on the back.. haha I'm just thinking to myself that would have been cool when it just came out, but now buying it used you just look at that thing and foresee another expense lol. Let me know what your thoughts are on me getting an s2000. I felt the same way you did, I went to look, and as soon as I sat in it I was like "ooooh I have to have this." Never felt that before
A 2009 Porsche Cayman costed 230K $ in India in 2009 (Cuz Import taxes) I found one with 18k kms, for sale at 45k $, Cayman S, 2009 Should I go for it?
I have the same exact model and year im having trouble with blue tooth is there a blue tooth in the car? Ive had it for 2 years and still havent found it Lol!! Helppp!!
I have a metallic blk non s 07 with 68,000 miles love it it goes where you point it is very quick and you'd have to spend 30,000 more at least better its performance as I've proved 😉😊😜
You bought just in time for that little IMS bearing to explode in your engine sending shards of metal all through the motor assuring total destruction of itself. Read up on the IMS bearing problem and get rid of the car before it goes out.
Hey not sure if you still reply to comments on this video but I gotta ask. Did you ever replace tiers on this beast? How expensive are new tires, because my friend owns this car and I just love this car overall probably the cheapest and best looking sport car in my opinion.
Mine is an 08 2.7 with 75k miles. I pay 390 a month for 5 years. Thats with a 5.5% interest rate. One thing to look at is with a 10+ year old car.. Intrest rate will be high even with excellent credit. I also paid a premium because it came from Jim Ellis Porsche dealership in ATL. Insurance with progressive full coverage is 135$ a month. Most expensive part though is the shop work. Cost me 1150$ for water pump/thermostat replacement. Cost 750$ for ignition coils. I do my own oil changes. Planning to do my own brakes. Full brake job pad/rotors/sensors is about 1500$. Adds up quickly, that is with all OEM parts but NOT at dealership. Indy shops typically charge 115-140$ an hour for work on these cars. Definitely not cheap but it is by far worth it to be able to drive a mid engined Porsche that looks similar to a Ferrari Dino 🦕 !
+Michael Kosch I actually bought the car in Chicago and had the local VW/Audi dealer do the inspection. It was $140 and included all the inspections they do for a certified pre-owned car.
thanks, in the same boat, have a 2005 Hyundai accent that I'll need to upgrade soon. I want to go big for my next vehicle. Narrowed down to 2018 VW Golf GTI or Golf R, Jeep Cherokee trailhawk, Hyundai Genesis coupe 3.8 or older model Caymen.... how is your gas mileage? How much can you fit in the rear hatch?
I want to make you a question: Why do neighborhoods in US are so beautiful, please tell me why??? Talking about the car, I wanna buy one of those 2011 Cayman S automatic PDK. I have a VW 2015 Beetle and I feel they are cousins. Greeting from SouthAmerica.
I wish I had this car... My friend has automatic 2007 cayman. I just love the car I wish I had it myself, he let me drove it abit (2 miles). I want to buy it, but all the money you have to throw away to keep it (since it has 250horse powers+). Did you have any problems with it untill now? Enjoy driving it, hope I own one in the future :')
Ok so I’m in high school and I have been working on a fishing boat in Alaska and I made 40,000 but from taxes I have around 26,000... so should I get a BRZ or a cayman base
I'm looking at one that goes for $24,000 with +65,000 miles. I make about $500 a week (Get paid bi-weekly, so about $1,000 every month) should I get it?
