Season 3, Episode 13
Thanks so much to Steve for offering to take me flying in his stunningly beautiful Piper Matrix. I very much would like to aspire to owning a machine with this kind of performance some day, but as Steve says, it takes steps. Let me know what you think the next step up in airplane should be for me!
Hey, did you guys know that the FAA actually certifies flight instructors to tell you everything that I try to convey in these videos? You should definitely talk to one of them instead of trusting some video you found on the internet, because who am I to tell you how to fly? I'm just a pilot sharing my experiences with the world, and these videos are not meant to be instructional or advisory in any respect.

Tell Steve that he did exactly the right thing when he had a mag failure, at night especially. As an aircraft mechanic for over 25 years, as well as a commercially rated pilot I advise NEVER leave the airport environment with something like that. I think some people think that you have too many options with two magnetos, kinda like having twin engines. If you have an engine problem, LAND, ASAP. The dual mag does have a factor of redundancy, but the engine will essentially not perform the way it's designed on one. The timing is off because you only have one flame front moving across the combustion chamber instead of two. Kuddos Steve for making, in my opinion, the only right decision.
@FriendlySkiesFilm

Don't worry about it being "your opinion." I think we can all agree here that it's the ONLY decision! Far a sane man, anyway... Well said, my friend.

Someone mentioned the Piper Lance. My dad had a ‘77 Lance when I was a teen. That was after having a 175, and then a 182. While the 182 was a good performer, the Lance was incredibly roomy and quiet in comparison. (Ohyeah, it was probably 15-20 kts faster and hauled more). The Lance is the hershy bar wing, the Saratoga would be the same plane with a tapered wing. You could probably find a decent early Saratoga that’s “affordable”. But if you really want to haul something in that airframe, stick with fixed gear and look at a Six. But I like Cessna too. And if was looking for good fixed gear single with some loading flexibility, I’d seriously look at the 206.

Hello again! Press and hold the A/P disengage button will silence it after one beep! I fly the Vulcanair P68TC twin-engine for work. It's a six seater with G950 (like G1000). MAX T/O WEIGHT: 4594 LB. BASIC EMPTY WEIGHT: ~3300 LB. Climbs at 700-1000 FPM. ~100 KIAS. 38"/2500 RPM. Cruises at 135 KTAS (32"/2200 RPM @ 5.000 FT. 20-22gph TOT) You'll get 145 KTAS with 34"/2300 rpm with 26-28 GPH TOT). It flies like a C182, really easy to fly, has a very wide C.G envelope, and great view for the passengers (high wing). Long and large tail enables this airplane to land with high crosswind component (20kt+). New price: €1.2M. Company I'm working for has a couple 2015 models for sale for around €800.000. Older models sells for around €200.000+. Go get your M.E.P class rating, it is rewarding! Pluss you'll get the extra security of two engines when flying over water, especially since you want to bring loved ones with you :D As always, thanks for sharing flying videos!

I was convinced until you got to the price! XD That would be an EXCELLENT twin for the Caribbean, though, with so much forward window space.

I liked the Mechanic's retort to "why would you jump out of a perfectly good plane?" The Skydiver's retort is "have you seen the plane?" Most Skydivers are NOT pilots, and trust their Main/Reserve MUCH more than what they consider a 'one chance' airplane. 30-40 years ago, jump plane safety didn't get quite the attention it gets today. One operation I remember out in the boonies didn't have easy access to AvGas, so even before the STC was in effect for Auto Fuel a trip to the local gas station with a 55 gal. drum was normal for supplies. Figuring the main possible issue as vapor lock at altitude, the assumption was that if it ever DID happen the airplane was always in gliding distance of the airport if a restart didn't work. P.S. - flying lessons AFTER learning to Skydive are initially scary. No parachute for emergencies & flying too low to feel comfortable. Totally opposite the drummed in safety training of leaving IMMEDIATELY if the pilot says "GO" to get the weight out (once over 500' AGL). Pilot can deal with it, with a greatly reduced load, and if he can't he's got his OWN parachute for emergencies.

Wow! I didn't think my mag issue would be of much interest. I didn't tell Nick the whole story though. If you know KFRG, you can park for the whole day at the main terminal just with the cost of the $2.50 landing fee. You can not park overnight. Once I confirmed the issue, I got a taxi clearance to head to an FBO. Once there I waited almost an hour in line behind flight crews arranging hotel and car rental car arrangements. Being about 9 pm on Thanksgiving didn't help matters. By about 10pm or so I was able to arrange a one way car rental. I get on the road and at about 11pm I am stuck in gridlock traffic. Just the kind of thing owning a plane helps one avoid. I made it home to Boston around 3am! It was one long day for sure. Given it was a holiday weekend, the plane was not completed for a week plus.

During preflight run-up in a Cirrus while in the FL Keys, my L magneto failed. I cancelled IFR clearance and taxied back. No bigs, stayed an extra day in Paradise while the bird was being fixed. Knocking anyone who decides to exercise good pilot-judgement by returning to land after equipment failure in the interest of safety... is a fool! Great show, FSF! Consider a C182 which has good payload and long XC ability. If a low-wing is your thing, a young G3 or G2 Cirrus could work. They're quite comfy on the long haul and yes, no manual trim. BRS is a plus too.

I enjoyed the PA46 Malibu Mirage, it is very easy to fly and navigate, and the Piper Matrix you were in this video is in the same family. Both are very expensive single engine aircraft. I think Piper's M600 is another outstanding single engine aircraft. I have never been in or flown one however, they are beautiful, a work of art in my humble opinion. Thank you very much for this video.

Fantastic video, Nick. I just got back from a trip flying a Piper Arrow from Anchorage to Houston Texas through Canada. It was a trip! I'd love to have a chat with you about it sometime and some of the challenges we faced. As far as your next airplane, that's really a question of mission. Speed, payload, range. You can have two of those three unless you spend a good chunk of change. Lol A good step up is a Mooney M20C, D, or E model. They're short body but they carry alot of weight. The J model is a bit more expensive, but it's faster and the backseat is MUCH more comfortable. Feel free to contact me about your next airplane or anything else. I'd love to have a chat.

13:06 This is an efficient plane and seems to be more room in it than a Bonanza. One piston engine is nice and economical compared to a twin. A twin needs to be able to carry the whole weight including the weight of a dead engine (when one engine quits). Singles are more efficient cos it doesn't have to carry an extra dead engine. So a twin nearly needs the same power as a single engine (on each engine). Twins have to be "overpowered' when both engines are running so it can still fly with one engine. This makes a twin less efficient on fuel with the extra power and weight of the big engines. Twins should be ultra slick so they can go as fast as possible when they have 600 hp just to carry 6 people.

Mooney M20F you can pick up a nice one for the cost a mid level pick up truck, around 1100lbs useful, 52-56 gal of fuel depending on the year gives you a real nice payload and at 145-150 ktas depending what speed mods it may already have oh and its Fuel Injected 200 horse all on a little more fuel than a warrior

@@FriendlySkiesFilm I am curious. Did you have to go through any special certifications or waiver for your glasses? I am wanting to start working on my pilots license and want to make sure my glasses are not going to disqualify me or limit me on when I am allowed to fly.
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 5 лет назад
If you're in the US, it will cause you zero extra difficulties. I don't think it's an issue anywhere else, either. The medical examiner will make you read the standard eye chart with and without glasses. If you can't pass (or even see the chart on the wall, in my case) without glasses, your license will read, "must wear corrective lenses" under limitations. This is often not even considered a "real" limitation by insurance companies, whom include a line like, "list all limitations on certificate, not including corrective lenses." Should be a piece of cake! I hope that helps :)

I heard the Reno Air Races were a big disappointment due to very few planes racing. The insurance costs were prohibitive and that defined the turnout. Do some research first before you decided to make the trip, unless there is another reason to travel west, and that is just an additional stopover. Like the plane!

I had a scary incident as a brand spanking new private pilot, less than 50 hours. I did my runup, checked the mags and when I switched it to "R" the engine shut off. I did this a couple times and for some reason I thought the ignition switch was messed up. Flew 20 mins (this was a fuel stop for cheap gas before heading home) where I later found out I was on one mag. Very scary in hindsight, but thankfully I was able to learn something from it.

Look at the robin Dr400s, beautiful aircraft, no bigger than you're warrior, but they're faster, typically more useful loads for comparable engine sizes, and more efficient.

No worries, they do need to be hangered really mind, since they are a wooden construction. They do also have a Dr401, which is a significantly more modern variant, don't know so much about it though.

Another great video! Enjoyed it! What do you think about a piper lance? If you are OK with a Little age and a four place maybe a piper to 235 or even like a Comanche 250? In my opinion I have worked on all three of those and are great reliable and somewhat affordable aircraft maybe for your next step up? The Comanche flies nice and true and steady and pretty good performance but there are a few 80s on it that require some maintenance every few years🤔.. on a sidenote I help manage a small FPO and would be interested in seeing a video on reviews of different types of self propelled aircraft towing bars... i've used some of the smalls four stroke engine with the single wheel. They work pretty good but can be a little cumbersome.. I saw this guy had one of those 18 V power drill looking tows . I would be interested on hearing or watching on how well those were compared to the gas powered ones..,

Commanche is a nice flying plane but has a lot of ADs (airworthiness directives) to check on each & every year. I'd look at an older Bonanza. The 35s (V-tails) usually sell at a small discount & they're wonderfully well-balanced on the flight controls & ruggedly constructed.

Why on earth would you takeoff on one mag period let alone at night? Isn't that why you do a mag check so you can find a problem before you takeoff? I don't think I'd fly with whomever said it's okay to takeoff on one mag. I had a mag issue in my 182RG once (on the ground luckily). It started out with trouble hot starting (fuel injected) and eventually it wouldn't start at all. I asked the mechanic why both mags were going bad at the same time and he told me when one goes bad the other has to work harder and therefor it goes bad quicker.

Significantly less useful load than the Warrior. Add 1 passenger & a small overnight bag and you'll have to offload fuel -- shortening your range. They're fast & beautiful but limited load. Also the company support for this no-longer-produced model is limited (they're far more interest in their new Mako model). Sold mine for that reason...no regrets.

So FSF, looking to get my ga in a couple years (need both time and money ATM), what would you recommend for a budget option that would be able to carry 4, on mostly 1/2 -3 hour trips? I'm looking at the cesna caravan, but pretty open, even to potentially a self built.
@FriendlySkiesFilm

Sounds like you're in the market for a Warrior too. The caravan is... not conducive to a smaller budget, with an operating cost just over $1,000/hr.

You may also consider a Grumman Tiger, a 180hp 4 seater w about the same useful load. Cruise at 130-140 KTAS on 6-8 gal/hr depending on how you lean. Agile, clean aircraft that is fun to fly.

c182 over a bonanza?...… are you kidding me lol. Bonanza is way way faster and more powerful plus its way wayyyy sexier especially air to air and sitting on the ramp. the older ones have a great useful load. mine is 1280 lbs. if I get tip tanks its up to 1400. now cirrus v bonanza is a more realistic debate. Not to mention the bonanzas short field and rough field performance is pretty great. … not a 182 but close.
