In my experience, the biggest downside to a well-trained rottie is that they don't understand they are too big for your lap.

There is a family down the street that has a Rottweiler. It's way over 100ibs. They also have a boy who is about 7. Every day the boy and dog walk down to the bus stop. The kid gets on the bus and the dog walks itself home. After school is over the dog walks itself to the bus stop and waits for the kid to get off the bus and then they walk home together. It's pretty crazy.

My cousin rescued 4 of these wonderful dogs. they were huge and came from an abusive situation. after 30 days, they had decompressed and their incredible personalities came out. They guarded the home from anyone they did not know, and the oldest always looked to my cousin if a new person could be trusted. The mailman always brought them treats, the UPS guy wanted to steal them all. More than once he found his adult male neighbor playing with them in the yard. A neighborhood girl would throw the ball every morning while waiting for the bus. My sister had a boyfriend though we trusted him, the dogs didnt and he wouldn't go near the house. Turned out the guy was a liar and an abusive alcoholic. He fooled us, but not the 'crew'

My family used to have two rotties (partners) and sometimes, since we live in the country with farms all around, some animals from the neighbors would get loose and walk around. Once as my parents and grandmother were sitting outside with the dogs, two sheep came along down the road. Instantly, the dogs ran over to them and, interestingly enough, began to herd them. They circled them for a few minutes before my folks were able to get them back in line, but those sheep were completely unharmed--if a little traumatized.

Hands down the most gentle, warm, loyal and patient animal I've ever been friends with. @@personthing88 I used to tease my mother's jumbo size poodle about being so dumb that he let someone cut his tail off (the dog was really dumb). Poodles usually have their tails cut off within the first week or so of life, sort of like the foreskin removal done as a rite of passage by a rabbi or physician on Jewish babies or in my case physicians that wrongly conclude that a baby and its parents are Jewish (we weren't and aren't, I am an Anglican and my parents were/are also Christians) when one parent isn't available and the other is unconscious (I would have loved to see video of my mother reacting to finding out that some rabbi had removed my foreskin when she was finally able to come to, that footage would have been priceless, the same physician also named me since he needed a name for the birth certificate -- remember, this was in 1946 and things were done differently then). As for her poodle, she got it as a rescue dog and didn't have control of him having his tail cut off.

One time, I kid you not, I took the leash and she was the sweetest, calmest doggie. She didn't pull, went far ahead or anything like that - she also looked back to me to see if I was still there. It was like she was taking me for a walk, taking care of me. Later in life I had a rottweiler-German Shepherd mix (mostly rottweiler), with her I was lucky to have spent 11 years. Well...he came over, looked me dead in the eye, and let out the loudest sigh I have ever heard come out of a dog and plonked his breezeblock of a head on my knee, looked at me and his face literally said "luvs pleez". Well you best believe I gave him the absolute heckinest scritches of his life!!!

I remember playing with my grandpa's rotties, Boris and Natasha. 5 year old me in a kiddie pool with these almost 140 pound dogs, splashing and giggling the whole time. They are such sweeties. We recently lost Natasha to old age, she was the alpha of the two and Boris was a henpecked husband. Whenever he'd get too close to anyone for Nats liking she'd bark and growl at him. But when they were alone they'd cuddle up together and it was the sweetest thing ever. We miss you old girl.

Then one day she said we couldnt because they saw on the news there was a rottweiler attack. I didnt understand and still dont understand how that effects how people see their own dogs. Vast majority of dogs are great family pets and the ones that arnt have clues before they actually attack. Youre much more likely to get killed by a parent than your family dog statistically thats true and says alot about the gentle nature of dogs in general!

I dunno. Results may vary and my experience may not be typical, but when I was a kid my family had a rottie from a relative's litter that just kinda happened. Not well bred, and I think one of the parents was a bit mean (though not super vicious.) We didn't really put in any special effort to train her, just kinda kept her as a family dog and taught a few tricks. Still grew up to be an absolute sweetheart. Loved to swim, used to try to dig rocks up from the shallow water of a lake, nearly crushed me against the wall once getting in my bed to escape a scary thunderstorm. I want to think that as long as you're not trying to get a horrible nasty vicious attack rottweiler, you probably won't. (While I'm reminiscing though, have a horror story in three words: "Rottweiler husky mix." Nothing worse than a dog that's tall, strong, stubborn, and KNOWS IT. No counter was safe.)

My family used to have a rottie named Cyrus when my sisters and I were very young, around 3-7 years old. Very kind dog, super sweet, never bit or hurt any of us. My dad got the idea that he might be a good guard dog because of how alert he was and how he seemed to watch after us. My parents tested this by having my dad come home from work one day loudly and angrily, in his full security guard uniform, to see how Cyrus would react. He ran and hid behind my mom.

It's not butchering, it's a minor surgical procedure. Most male children get circumcised when their babies. They don't call that butchering either. Tail docking is usually done by a vet when they're small pups before the blood supply & nerves are fully formed. Rottweiler's are a working utility dog. Tail docking is done for utility reasons & to prevent any future tail injuries. I can't believe people are so uneducated about it & make such emotional judgements about it before knowing the facts. Poodles, french bulldogs, Boston Terriers, English Bulldogs, Boxers, Cattle dogs, dobermans and many others get tail docked as pups for both cosmetic & utility purposes. It's part of the breed standard for many dog breeds.

Twenty years ago, when my sister rescued her first Rotti, I was a bit horrified (I was young and uneducated, cut me some slack), then I actually met Doc for the first time. Doc was a gentle giant of the first order. His favorite game in the world was this variant of Tug Of War where I planted myself on the ground with a rope in my hands and he grabbed the rope and dragged me all around the house until he'd get tired and fall asleep in my lap. He weighed more than me at the time, though, so it took a lot of that to tire him out. But he did love playing tug-tug, and my sister's wood and tile floors always ended up very well dusted (as did the seat of my jeans lol). I have a picture of him I took one Christmas, where my six year old niece is sitting on the floor next to him with a cookie in her hand and he's just staring at that cookie like it's the most enticing treat in the world, but he didn't once try to take it from her or even try to get her attention by whining or pawing. When I called him over and gave him my cookie, he spent the rest of the day reminding me how much he loved me with nuzzles and (very soggy) licks. He was one of the sweetest, gentlest dogs I've ever known (#1 gentlest was a mastiff named Lily, but Doc was a close second), and I found it utterly hilarious that he was scared to death of my sister's free-range chickens. Her cats, on the other hand, loved him and used him as a warm bed and comfy perch.

My mother has loved Rotties for years, and that dog was the most gentle animal I'd ever come to meet in my lifetime. She loved people and loved our cats. Not once did she ever show aggression, but when our landlord held a fan high up close to my mom, she would never let him in the house again. He didn't hold it against her, either, saying she was simply doing her job and protecting us. She always slept outside of my room, or inside my room on my bed even into old age. My grandparents used to breed Rottweilers until I was about 7 years old and the breed was simply to big for them in their old age. My grandmother was always told by neighbors who didn't know her dogs that she was crazy for letting them around her grandkids. But she would. Her female Rottweiler was the best baby sitter and was super gentle with me and my cousins when we where really little in fact she saved my cousin and I from being kidnapped when I was 5 and he was 4. As i have been told by my grandmother this is how it went. My grandmother had to step inside for a quick second to turn off the kitchen timer, and left me and my cousin out side with her breeding pair of Rottweilers. We where playing when a man ran out of his car and grabbed my cousin by the arm. Before he barely had my cousin off the ground the female rottie was off the front porch and bitting him to let go. The male rottie started barking like crazy as the man let go of my cousin and was screaming for her to let go. My grandma came out grabbed my cousin and I put us on the porch before calling the female rottie back. The man screamed at my grandmother and later tried to sue and have the Rottweiler put down. Did get very far cause he apparently admitted to trying to kidnap my cousin and ended up in jail. I don't remember much of that day just the barking and the man shouting but I'm really grateful for those dogs and will always love a Rottweiler.

He really didn't have a single aggressive cell in his body, didn't even do the infamous rottie rumble. Rest in peace, Bebop, you big dumb dog. You were such a good boy.

My grandmother adopted an elderly rottweiler after her owner couldn't take care of her anymore and that dog was the calmest and kindest dog I've ever met. My brother is terrified of dogs, but he took her out on walks, on his own and loved her so much. Sadly she died too soon and I still miss her, 25 years later. And she's the reason why I laugh when someone says rottweilers are vicious dogs, generally dogs are only bad with bad owners. And that's on ALL dogs.

Favourite game my brother in law's rottie used to play: at breakfast we used to give him a piece of French toast, which he would hold in his mouth for the next hour. He would go round to every member of the family and proudly show you his piece of French toast by dropping it at your feet. When you told him he was a good boy he would pick it up and take it to the next family member. Adorable goof.

@@AskMia411 That’s such a great idea, for naming a big guard dog; I love it when people give huge, and supposedly scary, dogs cutesy, or weird, names, that go totally against the stereotype of the particular dog breed. Like naming a pit bull “Mr. Wiggles”, or calling a dachshund “Max the Mutilator, Devourer of Souls”; it will be especially funny, when you register them with the vets, and have to spell out the name over the phone haha. Or, when you’re actually at the vets, waiting to be seen, and the veterinarian calls your dog’s name out, for everyone in attendance to hear; and they all look around, slightly nervously, searching for the beast that is “Max the Mutilator, Devourer of Souls”…only to discover that the name belongs to a tiny prancing sausage, on four legs haha. I think I’ll be doing just that, if/when I get another pet. All the best. 👍😀
