Key Points 1. Sketching and 3D Modelling 2. Deep understanding of Mechanical Engineering--mechanisms and fasteners 3. Eye for aesthetics- shape, proportions, color, material, finishing. 4. Having Empathy - putting yourself in users shoes to understand their needs, problems they are facing. 5. Be Reliable

Jimmy, I want to let you know that I watched several of your videos with my 14-year-old son who is interested in graphic design, industrial design, and potentially mechanical engineering. We started with the portfolio for school part 1, and 2, then a few really nice photoshop works for Bugatti (what else would attract a 14-year-old right?), then this one. I am really grateful for these videos as they opened our eyes to the skill and disciplines it takes to pursue an education and a career in the field of industrial design. Thank you for putting out great content!

Hey hey. Thats always nice to see young kids trying to vision themselves into something. I am not an industrial designer, but I did couple various creative things in my life. if you want, I might talk to him and encourage his design thinking :)

Absolutely loved the video! Could you please make a video on "good" and "bad" design? A bad design not just in terms of functionality but also in terms of other design elements. How should I develop the proficiency to decide if the product has a good or bad design just by looking at it and What aspects other than asthetics should I keep in mind? (Few people say there's no such thing as good or bad design though) Thank you

Just want you to know, I mean, I might just want to tell somebody also but your videos have truly helped me figure out what I want to do with my life. Thank you. I knew there was a place out there for me, and YOU helped me figure out that this is what I want for myself with how thoroughly you have explained what an ID is, and I just checked your college vid and you helped me even pick the school where I plan to learn the craft. Thank you.

Hey man, I want to thank you for this video. I’ve been so lost for years of what to choose. I love design and manufacturing. This video made me realize I need to be an industrial designer!!

According to your video, I have everything I need to become an industrial designer. But it sucks that the study is so time intensive which gives little time to work and other hobbys. as I hate being a one-trick-pony. rather a jack-of-all-trades. I study international business, and tried various things within the graphic design sphere but it always felt like it's not "plastic" enough. that I cannot feel the design enough. with industrial design could touch and field what I do. Also as a graphic designer its purely a visual thing and I also want to bring function into the form, therefore my motivation goes in your direction.

Ive wanted to be a designer ever since I was little and your videos are so helpful :) I've always, along with my desire to do design, had a fear that if I went for it I would be a failure and not make any money. Watching your videos help me solidify in my mind that I want to pursue design!

Wow. I was asking various IDs on youtube, watching their videos, generally asking whether industrial design was right for me, and you have explained this thoroughly, inside and outside throughout your youtube videos and in this video. I am truly thankful for people like you. I.wish you the best dude.

Another excellent video Jimmy, so informative. I really loved that you included empathy. I teach design and fine art at a High school in Australia. I am currently writing a new product/industrial design course or our Middle school students (year 9). I will definitely show this video to my classes. Keep up the great work.

Wow, cool presentation! Great advice as usual :) One thing I would like to learn more about is making an aesthetically pleasing portfolio. You made a video about what goes into a portfolio, but you didn't mention how to make one. My branding/graphic design skills are not very developed, so I have a basic portfolio with sketches/CAD/renderings. How can you make your portfolio look more pretty like it came out of a magazine/brochure?

I struggle to think about this too, and i think using softwares like KeyShot and Photoshop to render products really beautifully is the key to this problem!

Hi! I really loved the video. It has a lot of technical tips few designers here on youtube have and uhm... I just started desing school (yup 2020 is a bizarre year to enter college) and even though I´m the arsty kind of student that cares a lot about aesthetics, observes people a lot and tries to actively practice and empathy. I'm worried I´m not good enough, any advice?

Hi Jimmy, I’m a college undergrad studying photography. However, my passion lies in in design and I have strong feeling for ID. I’m wondering if there are anyway to still get into the field without a design degree. I was going to be studying engineering but life got in the way, and when I found industrial design, I was too late to be admitted, and seems like it’s a career that depends on a lot of technical skills. I would love some pointers from someone in the field, thanks!

A master in mechanical engineering after a bachelor in industrial Design is not a good idea (mechanical design being very hard especially during a master where you go further in the subject) I'm personally going for a master in design after a bachelor in mechanical engineering

@@tchoutchou1876 Hello, I am actually considering doing that, as I am an Industrial Designer and I want to become more technical in terms of material properties, strengths, and other aspects of production. I want to understand both the exterior and interior of products, learn more about manufacturing processes, etc. That's why I am interested in pursuing a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, rather than pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering which would take too long for me. However, seeing your comment, you're making me doubt.
