THANK YOU for this video! I am a new grad nurse, currently working at a level II trauma hospital on a Neurosurgery unit. I still have a long way to go, but like yourself, my love for the field of flight nursing started when I worked as an ED tech and went up to the heli pad to help transport a patient down to our ED. This by far is the most inspiring/helpful video I have come across for this nursing field.

@Jcrosay 3 года назад
@@happyjohal4011 Hi! I’m in AB so I can’t speak for all of Canada but after you complete the RN program there is usually a minimum requirement for years spent in ICU or ER. For example, for STARS, it’s minimum 5 years in either setting. Then the following certifications are an asset: ACLS, ITLS, PALS, NALS/NRP, TNATC. There may be additional courses too. It’s a long journey from what I gather. I’m a paramedic now but hoping to do flight nursing later in life. 😁 Best of luck!

Like seeing how other nations do this, I'm in England so our helimed (and the ambulance service trauma cars) generally run with either two critical care paramedics or one and a trauma doctor though doctor's who have specialized in pre hospital emergency medicine are becoming more common, there's a series on RU-vid "helicopter er" that's been going for years and is good for showing how helimed has developed into taking the emergency room to the patient rather than the patient to the emergency room

Awesome video, really a very clear picture answering a lot of questions. I am a former woodland firefighter (12 years) with two seasons as a helicopter crew member. I have been considering this path as it looks really fun and rewarding. I am currently in nursing school, due to finish my BSN end of 2024. Does my helicopter experience count for anything? Will I still need 3 years as an RN in ICU or similar critical care?
@careersteer6497
@careersteer6497 2 года назад
Hi Behr, very likely, your helo experience would count a lot. Remember that employers are often dealing with risk management, and if they have a potential nurse who already has plenty of helo time, that will help you.

Hi Hamy, I would have to defer to the experts on that. What I would recommend you try is contacting either REMSA or Care Flight or another awesome Med-Evac company and specifically ask what their requirements are. My assumption is that they would be happy to tell you. Please don't forget to subscribe to the channel!

How much do you need to concern yourself with the potential loss of hearing over time. I’m thinking it must be pretty loud?
@DocJay
@DocJay 3 года назад
I can answer this if you’d like. It can get very loud. You typically will get a flight physical each year including an audiogram. If you might have noticed, she has ear plugs hanging around her neck. The flight helmet offers some hearing protection as well. I’ve been a flight nurse for 14 years and have “normal hearing” for someone in my age group. Good luck to you if you choose this path!
