The audio in this video was recorded with in-ear binaural microphones. If you wear headphones, your mind won't be blown, but it will go, "woah, that's cool."
I'm also the producer for the Winding Road RU-vid Channel:

Here on TheTopher, I'm known for putting a camera on my face and driving cars. Whether it's about any of my personal cars or reviews on weekly press vehicles, the goal is to give you an idea of what a certain car is like to drive or live with. Most of my videos are filmed in POV, with my clothes on, and (for like the 5th time) with in-ear binaural audio. Which, if I haven't made it clear yet, is why you should wear headphones. Because of the whole "woah" factor. It's there, trust me. Try it, it's pretty nuts. Or don't. As long as you whitelist me on your adblocker I'm okay with whatever you do or don't do with regards to headphone usage. That is all. Oh and I guess you should also probably subscribe. Why are you still reading this, you should be watching the video. With headphones! Hah, had to sneak that in there one more time. Later!

It isn't as hard as it sounds. I also daily drive a BRZ in Northern Alberta. I just had to put a new battery to replace the 4 year old OEM one. Aside from brake pads, rotors and oil... that is all I had to do to it after 86000km. I drove it from Toronto to montreal, montreal to gagetown NB in the winter and from gagetown to edmonton in the summer. Still drives like a dream. (the astute among you might be able to guess my profession. bonus points). I have only been stuck once. Snow was at the bumper and I was beaching but, oh man, did the car try. The traction control was kicking in and I was putting along at 5kph ish and i had to turn and that is what got me. I was able to rock out of it a couple times but I couldn't make the turn without a guy pushing. I love driving this thing in the winter. Like the guy said, it's tail happy, a challenge, teaches invaluable skills and it is really fun. Don't even attempt it without proper tires. It is a death wish. I did it once out of necessity and it was the stupidest thing I have ever done. My breaking distances were like 250-300m from 60 kph. GET SNOW TIRES.

I just bought a new BRZ today, will be taking delivery in mid-April once the worst of the snowstorms are over and the potholes get filled..winter in Canada makes for crappy roads especially in spring. Nice vid. I winter drive my BRZ too - same size tires as yours as I moved mine from a miata. It's 5 times the fun in winter as it is on dry roads in summer, so well balanced. I don't find it too difficult to get stuck on steeper hills, but there aren't too many where I live. The only downside for me is my gearbox sucks from first to second in the cold, and by the time I get to work it hasn't had chance to warm up. On the other hand, pulling out of a sideroad in second avoids this issue, and makes it much easier to hold a long drift from taking off. :)

Sup guys, I live in the sunshine state and even I have a notchy second gear when engine is cold. Right now during the winter + spring it gets as cold as my hometown and the one thing that works amazingly well is double clutching into second. After practicing for a few months I can't believe double clutching like you should is so easy, and second gear changes are buttery smooth if done right and much better than using the synchros even if not done perfect. Gonna change to red line Mt oil and red line diff oil but will always DC second gear, it's night and day.
@TheTopher
@TheTopher 5 лет назад
When I switched to Redline 75w90 that helped with those second gear shifts a lot- but I know what you mean - now I'll either start in second or go from first to neutral and then gently into second for the first few minutes until things start to warm up.

I have a 2014 Brz as well, it’s my daily and I live in Canada. When I bought it people thought I was crazy because everyone drives AWD trucks or SUV’s but I personally wouldn’t have it any other way. The car handles extremely well, that and the manual transmission is what sold me on it 😆 It’s my first winter with it and I found this video was very informative; I’ll definitely be taking some tips and tricks from it! What are you thoughts on studded tires for the car? I’ve debated sandbags in the back but I also considered getting just the rear wheels studded as I have a second set of winter wheels and tires. I’ve found so far the car is really good for stopping in snow because of its light weight but for take offs when it’s icy it can be tricky. Also would love to see a rust proof video too on this car, if you make one in the future! Anyways, great video! You’ve just gained a new subscriber 😄 cheers!

@TheTopher 4 года назад
Thanks! Studded tires can’t hurt, they’re not legal for us here in Michigan, but the key is a skinny tall tire (195 or 205). A sand bag in the trunk will help too but usually isn’t necessary. I run an FR-S, and I'll say that despite being "capable" in the winter, the lightweight characteristics and the RWD combined make it problematic in the SLUSH. Fishtails off the line which becomes a hefty issue in traffic. Didn't do well in Monday's (January 28th) Toronto snow storm lol ALSO, stuck on ice after parking; little back and forth shove from someone helps!

I daily my BRZ in the winter, even with owning a lifted V8 4Runner with BFG KO2s :) I get nearly 30mpg one 93oct where the 4Runner gets roughly 17mpg. I have Cooper Weathermaster (studdable) snow tires in 205/60/16 on '97-'04 Legacy GT wheels that I bought on craigslist for $175 mounted & balanced. Don't run the studs. The tires were brand new, wheels perfectly functional but a little dirty/stained. I plastidipped them white. Not bad for my first time using the stuff. This is my second winter on them and they're awesome. If I know the weather is going to be bad I'll drive the 4Runner but it's nice to have them incase I get caught in bad weather. Also my summer's wouldn't hold up in the cold weather. They are OK in the wet and dry but not amazing, best in snow. One downside to the BRZ...everyone is driving SUVs, the BRZ is low & gets a ton of spray on the windshield. Other than that I love it. Warms up quickly, has heated seats, and is A TON of fun to throw around. Super controllable, very confident inspiring.

@@ThePedalDance Yikes. btw- how are the K02s in the snow? My dad's FJ has a set that's from 2014 and ice traction the other day was pretty terrible, probably because they've gotten hard with age.
@ThePedalDance
@ThePedalDance 5 лет назад
@@TheTopher I love the KO2s. Would absolutely buy another set. I find they are the best all-around AT tire. Quiet, great in dry, wet, and snow. I had a set of BFG AT KO's on my 2001 4Runner and those were great too. Will admit I haven't tried other brands so my opinion is not based on comparison. I'm sure there are other tires out there that are similar. This morning was all ice, no snow, and I didn't have a problem. My 2006 4Runner is the V8 which is full-time AWD (no RWD selector) that maybe makes a difference vs the FJ.

I also daily drive my 2015 BRZ in Wintertime. I have Continental WinterContact Si 215/45R17 tires mounted on Enkei M52 wheels: stock diameter. They've always performed well on ice, snow, and in the wet and even on cold, dry roads. They're grippier and more predictable than the OEM Michelin Harmony's ; I find that I can hang the tail out more on the WinterContacts without the traction control engaging than on the stock OEM tires. I've had them for three years. Unfortunately, Conti stopped building this size and I'll probably get Michelin X-ICE instead. We just had a nice, icy snowfall this evening and I took the BRZ out for fun: nice, controllable oversteer on slow speed corners and predictable rotation on faster bends. BRZ is my snowmobile.

I agree completely about seeking the drive in snowy conditions. I'm running on Pirelli ice zero FR in 205/55R16. The grip is great on wet and dry, but suffers in the deep stuff.

That's not how crash test ratings work...
@ThatWasherNerd
@ThatWasherNerd 5 лет назад
BrazenRain not necessarily, as in a crash test, it’s the car against the wall. Therefore, it’s only the wall’s force on the BRZ. If it was against an SUV from the side or head-on, then you would have a large, heavy, tall vehicle against a small, lighter, low vehicle. I know someone who was almost killed in a car like this when an SUV hit him head-on.
@BrazenRain
@BrazenRain 5 лет назад
@@ThatWasherNerd The walls in crash tests are more rigid than any vehicle you'd hit on the road with crumple zones, etc. The wall doesn't deform, so the BRZ's structure is responsible for dissipating all the energy.
@Nycholas1998
@Nycholas1998 5 лет назад
Crashing against a wall is the equivalent of hitting ur self at that speed. The wall pushes agains the car , the car pushes agains the wall. When 2 cars collide , each car experiences the same collision as if they struck a wall, however now yoy have 2 crashed cars instead of one crashed car and a wall.
@__-fm5qv
@__-fm5qv 5 лет назад
True, but I guess the main factor wouldn't be how safe it is in a crash, but the bumper height differential. If everyone is driving a big ass truck your crumple zones may not even be hit properly, meaning the energy will not be dissipated as easily, and you may even have part of the truck first hitting the windscreen before anything else. However that's only really in a front on collision. In a side impact or rear impact it should be just fine.
@emissarygw2264
@emissarygw2264 5 лет назад
@@BrazenRain yeah what the other guy said about not hitting the crumple zone. In a head on collision, the engine of the truck probably clears the brz crumple zone entirely and goes right through the windshield lol. Plus in crash tests at most the car comes to a stop, whereas if a light car hits a heavy one it will end up moving backwards due to momentum.

@samisuhonen9815
@samisuhonen9815 7 месяцев назад
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a big part of the BRZ/GT86 body made of aluminum? At least the hood, fenders, and some other parts? Which is why there are zero BRZ's or GT86's that are visibly rusted from those otherwise common spots. And also why the car is so god damn light. But the whole body is not aluminum. Some of the frame is steel. And thus it can rust. So the bottom of the car and anything else should be rust proofed, if possible. And if you go out to buy one, you should bring a flashlight and go under the car to check for rust on any of the steel frame.
